Pakistan v West Indies, 2016-17

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Pakistan v West Indies, 2016-17

15-Apr-2017
At Sharjah, September 30, 2016 (day/night). Pakistan won by 111 runs (DLS). Toss: West Indies. One-day international debut: K. C. Brathwaite.
It might not quite match the Mohammad family, but the Akmals have been prolific providers of talent for Pakistan. First came brothers Kamran, Umar and Adnan; now their cousin, Babar Azam, arrived. Many believe he may trump them all. His maiden international hundred set up a comfortable Pakistan victory, in much the same temper as their T20 triumphs. Azam has all the shots - much like his kin - but it was the cold-bloodedness with which he reached his hundred that stood out; it is not a trait common among Pakistanis of recent vintage. Assistance came from Sharjeel Khan's burst at the top, and cameos from Sarfraz Ahmed and Imad Wasim lower down, though a floodlight failure for 80 minutes scuttled some momentum (and reduced the contest to 49 overs). West Indies did not so much reply as complete the formality of a loss, as relative newcomers Hasan Ali and Mohammad Nawaz shared seven wickets on a slow pitch.
Man of the Match: Babar Azam.
