At Port Elizabeth, December 26-30, 2014. Drawn. Toss: West Indies. Test debuts: T. Bavuma; K. K. Peters.
With almost three days' play lost to rain, including the whole of the fifth, it would have taken an epic meltdown, even by West Indian standards, to produce anything other than a draw. But South Africans, for whom cricket goes beyond boundaries, could still rejoice in the fact that the country's 320th Test cap - the 85th since readmission in 1991-92 - was Temba Bavuma, only the sixth black African on the list, and the first batsman.
Bavuma's selection ended a period of 1,448 days - and 30 Tests - in which teams purporting to represent South Africa did not include one member of the race that makes up nearly four-fifths of the population. "I'm not just playing for myself," he said. "It adds a bit of pressure." Bavuma had an hour at the crease, scoring ten before edging the pacy Gabriel.
Despite better bowling by West Indies, whose attack included Kenroy Peters, a wiry left-arm seamer from St Vincent making his debut at 32, South Africa were rarely tested before declaring at 417 for eight. Elgar and du Plessis both scored centuries in their 68th over Roach injured ankle after 5 balls, completed by Taylor. There were also two hundreds for the tourists - Brathwaite's third and Samuels's sixth, as they built their stand of 176, a West Indian record for any wicket in Tests in South Africa. The illusion that the match was becoming competitive gained a toehold. But they were dismissed four balls apart and, an hour's play later, West Indies had slipped to 275 for nine, the last five wickets going down for 15. Three of them, including Ramdin and Chanderpaul, fell to the leg-spin of Imran Tahir, who had been whistled up late after Robin Peterson injured a finger. But a last-day washout spared West Indies further misery.
Man of the Match: K. C. Brathwaite.
