Thrumpton 163-8 (40 overs) (K Smithies 66, N Shaw 28, A Bacon 26) lost to
North Riding 164-3 (38.5 overs) (N Payne 54, M Reynard, 49, Y van Nootwijk
27 not out) by seven wickets.
North Riding won their first national club trophy for eight years when they
beat Thrumpton by seven wickets in the Women's National Knock-Out Cup final
at Radlett CC yesterday.
They made up for the disappointment of defeat in the National Premier League
final the week before in an exciting game which was not decided until the
last over. They reached the Knock-Out Cup final in 1997 but their last
success was the 1991 Cup title.
North Riding captain Melissa Reynard said: "We were quite conscious of
wanting to make up for last week when we could have played much better. It
was a very good game to have as the final and we enjoyed it."
England skipper Karen Smithies' 66 looked to have set Thrumpton, who merged
with Thrumpton men this season after years as Newark and Sherwood, well on
course. But Thrumpton's total was 20 runs short of Smithies' target and they
paid.
"We bowled fairly well although there were a few too many loose balls,"
Reynard said. "They had a few cameos at the end which made the finish
exciting.
Riding needed more than six per over for the last seven overs, a task Yeti
van Noortwijk and Laura Spragg were more than equal to. Smithies said: "Some
of the young ones batted well which showed they are coming through. But only
Nicky Myers of our bowlers looked like doing anything.
"It's been a brilliant season for us though, with the highlight being the
County Championships when we played as East Midlands and won the title after
promotion last year.
"Our merge with Thrumpton men has helped at club level. Gone are the days
when we turn up with eight or nine players. We have a sound base and use of
a wicket when we want it."
