Yorkshire poised for lead despite Trescothick ton

Matthew Hoggard took 4 for 82 to ensure Yorkshire were only one wicket away from seizing a sizeable first-innings lead against Somerset at Taunton despite Marcus Trescothick's century. Yorkshire extended their overnight score of 375 for 7 to 438 all out, a total that was boosted by 40 runs through extras, before their bowlers reduced the hosts to 326 for 9, still trailing by 112 in the first innings. Trescothick held the innings together, after Somerset lost Arul Suppiah and Justin Langer in the space of 13 runs, by adding 80 runs for the third wicket with James Hildreth. Hildreth batted aggressively, hitting 11 fours in his 38-ball 51 before he was bowled by Ajmal Shahzad. Trescothick remained firm, hitting 24 fours and a six, but Hoggard jolted the lower-middle order with three blows. As a result, Somerset slipped from 277 for 4 to 316 for 9. Trescothick was the eighth wicket to fall for 146 off 223 balls.

Derbyshire's batsmen made a slow but strong start to their first innings, reaching 188 for 2, in reply to Leicestershire's 412 at Derby. Derbyshire's bowlers, led by Ian Hunter who finished with 5 for 82, did well to limit their opponents after they had resumed at 341 for 5 on the second morning. Hunter provided the first breakthrough, trapping James Taylor in front for 89, and the rest mopped up the tail. Tom New, though, scored a brisk 66 to ensure Leicestershire got past 400. Derbyshire's openers, Chris Rogers and Steve Stubbings, provided their innings with a sound start, adding 60 before Stubbings was lbw to Harry Gurney. Rogers also fell to Gurney and missed his fifty by three runs but that was as far as Leicestershire's bowlers got. Garry Park, who remained not out on 70, shared an unbroken partnership of 85 with Daniel Redfern to steer Derbyshire through to 188 for 2, trailing by 224 runs.

Mark Ramprakash and Mark Butcher consolidated the Surrey innings with an unbroken partnership of 99 for the third wicket to end the day on 186 for 2 in response to Middlesex's 385 at Lord's. Surrey's openers added 62 for the first wicket but both Jonathan Batty and Michael Brown fell in the space of 25 runs. Ramprakash, who was on 64 not out at stumps, began his partnership with butcher with the score on 87 for 2 and defied Middlesex's bowlers. Earlier, Middlesex had resumed on 269 for 5 and their lower order added 116 runs before they were bowled out. Andre Nel finished with 4 for 59.

Fourteen wickets fell on the second day in Beckenhamand at the end of it Kent led Gloucestershire by 214 runs in the second innings with four wickets in hand. Gloucestershire began the day on 69 for 2 in reply to Kent's first-innings score of 231 but collapsed, losing eight wickets for 97 runs to be dismissed for 166. Simon Cook scythed through the middle order, claiming 5 for 22 and left little for his team-mates to pick up. His spell helped Kent secure a first-innings lead of 65. Kent's top-order batsmen, however, struggled to build on that advantage and succumbed against Steve Kirby, whose 4 for 25 included the top four batsmen. Left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee struck twice as well to leave Kent struggling at 149 for 6 at stumps.
