It is assumed from the incomplete scoresheet that MacDonald Club
played with only ten men.
HSC won the toss and decided to bat. The match was played on one
of the new pitches at the club, which proved to be good for
batting. Opening bat Neil Ferreira once again provided the
backbone of the HSC innings, and solid contributions from Daniel
Peacock, Kallin Davies and Trevor Gripper ensured a competitive
total for the home side.
The target of 238 always seemed out of reach for MacDonalds who
lost wickets at regular intervals. Brighton Watambwa again bowled
with pace and aggression, and at one stage bowled to nine slips !
As the challenge for a semi-final spot heats up, HSC will need to
play at their best against OH this weekend to guarantee their
place in the final four.
MANICALAND v QUEENS SPORTS CLUB, at Mutare Sports Club

This match was played at Alexandra Sports Club, a neutral venue
for the out-of-Harare teams. Manicaland won the toss and,
influenced by a green wicket, put Queens into bat. The wicket
produced no demons, however, and some wayward bowling early on
helped Queens off to a good start. The Manicaland bowlers
eventually found their rhythm, and Alec Taylor and off-spinner
Steve Lawson combined to dismiss Queens for 147.
Manicaland batted for 40 minutes before lunch without losing a
wicket, and this set them up for victory. Opening bat Steve
Lawson completed a good game by scoring 46 and Manicaland cruised
to an easy win by 4 wickets.
Despite the win, Manicaland cannot qualify for the semi-finals,
but Queens will still have a chance if they beat MacDonald Club
in their final-round robin game in Bulawayo this weekend.
OLD GEORGIANS v OLD HARARIANS, at Old Georgians Sports Club

The scorers did not trouble to identify one OH player or the
wicket-taking bowlers in the OG innings.
Old Georgians made a superb start in their match against the
league leaders, taking three early wickets and, despite a good
recovery by Colin Delport and Dirk Viljoen, getting six wickets
for about 140 runs. But they did not bowl well during the last
ten overs, and Trevor Penney and Bryan Strang batted superbly to
take advantage of this. Old Georgians were very thin on batting
and struggled against fine bowling by Eddo Brandes and Bryan
Strang in particular.

Alex won the toss and elected to bat first, their confidence
boosted by the return of Gavin Rennie, Douglas Marillier and
Andrew Blignaut to the side. In contrast, the Universals bowling
attack was without Douglas Hondo and David Mutendera who have
both left for the Dennis Lillee bowling academy in India. Despite
some poor fielding from the home side, Alex were reduced to 160/7
at one stage, but a 70-run ninth-wicket partnership between
Gilmour and wicket-keeper Ian Marillier helped them to a
respectable total. Dion Ebrahim, called upon to bowl for the
first time this season, claimed four wickets, and teenager
Sheharzad Shah (nephew of Ali) followed his impressive
performance on debut last weekend with a three-wicket haul. Ali
Shah was as reliable as ever with 2/21.
Universals started their reply poorly, losing three early
wickets. Ali Shah batted superbly to score 69 off 40 balls, and
53 from Dion Ebrahim put Universals back in the game, but despite
an entertaining knock from the younger Shah, Universals could not
keep the momentum going and eventually lost by 32 runs. Veteran
Kevin Duers bowled very well, as did Gavin Rennie with his
left-arm spinners.
Their loss means that Universals must now win against Manicaland
next weekend in Mutare to qualify for the semi-finals, while Alex
play Old Georgians next weekend, with the winner in that game
likely to qualify.
