Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka batsman, has signed with Sydney Thunder for the coming season of the Big Bash League. He will miss Thunder's first two matches because of Sri Lanka's ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE until December 27 but will be available thereafter.

''I'm really keen to play in the Big Bash. It's such a wonderful, competitive tournament,'' Dilshan said. ''I've been hoping to play for the past three years but [each time] I've had to go for international duty. This year I'm free to play almost the entire tournament. It's really exciting. I've always enjoyed Australian wickets, with the extra bounce. I'm really eager for this opportunity.''

Dilshan, who had retired from Test cricket in October, said his decision was influenced by his relationship with the Thunder coach, former Sri Lanka batsman Chandika Hathurusinghe, who had taken over in April after the side finished bottom of the table. Dilshan also said he was looking forward to playing with former Australia batsman Michael Hussey.

Dwayne Smith would be a better signing he was on fire in the IPL and the Aus tracks suit his game he's not in W.I setup so he is free for entire tournament

" I've always enjoyed Australian wickets, with the extra bounce".

His performances apparently dont say so. Struggled in every format so far.

@ osanda - i dont even mind if Dilshan retired from test coz of bigbash money .because he has played test till he gets 37 years old ( for 14 yrs) and still playing ODI s and T20 .

  • on November 27, 2013, 12:06 GMT

Not sure whether Dilshan retired from test cricket due to these commitments with Bigbash. Much money?

  • Cpt.Meanster on November 27, 2013, 11:33 GMT

His performances in Australia will determine whether RCB keep him with them in the upcoming season of the IPL. Dilshan is a match winner in ODIs and T20s and with the kind of pitches in Australia, he can hit through the line due to the true bounce in the wickets. All the best and looking forward to seeing him with the Bangalore Royal Challengers in 2014 opening with Gayle.

Khawaja and Gayle got most of the runs last year for Thunder but it wasn't enough, now with Khawaja, Hussey, Morgan, Dilshan there as full time players our main issue of not getting enough runs won't hold us back, i get a good feel for this season, at least we will be competitive which we havne't done so far.

Batting looking good with Hussey, Khawaja, Dilshan, Warner even though Warner and Clarke will be available for 1 game only due to Aussie commitment. Hussey, Khawaja and Dilshan will need to score most of the runs. But shapping up to be a good side.

guys believe me more than anything haturusinghe is the most hard working and target oriented coach i have ever seen. from his school time he was such a guy. with having such batting top 5 around him what else you can expect other than win.. my worry is the bowling attack.only Nannes is known.btw good luck guys..

The batting looks great with top 4 possibly being Warner, Dilshan, Hussey and Morgan, but there doesn't seem to be enough in their bowling. Having said that I'd back these 4 to chase down 200+ most days.

Good for them, after Chris Gayle's pathetic effort & general lack of interest it's good that someone who is keen join the team. For those who may take exception to the Gayle jibe, he averaged less than 20, had a strike rate of less than 100 & chose to live & stay across town away from his team showing zero interest in training or mentoring. But hey, the party boy enjoyed himself though with the pile of money he got.

David waner and TM dilsan opening the batting and a solid middle order with two excellent players of australia. Sydney thunders have good chance to win the title

  • on November 26, 2013, 14:09 GMT

Michael Clarke , Mike Hussey , David Warner , Eoin Morgan and Now Tilakratne Dilshan , That is some serious fire-power . Sydney Thunder really mean business this time after the disappointment of the Last two Seasons . Wish them Good Luck !
