Virat Kohli, the India batsman, has been named the ODI Cricketer of the Year at the ICC awards function in Colombo. He was picked ahead of MS Dhoni, Lasith Malinga and Kumar Sangakkara.

During the period under consideration, Kohli played 31 ODIs and scored 1733 runs at an average of 66.65, including eight hundreds and six half-centuries. His highest score was 183, against Pakistan in the Asia Cup.

"I think I have tried to keep things as simple as possible and it's worked for me on the field," Kohli said. "This year has been a learning curve along the way from the seniors in the team. It's been an all-round effort and I'm very happy to have won this award.

"It's always nice to be recognised by the ICC, it's a great feeling, and it's the first time I've won one of these awards."

In a year in which Kohli was named India's one-day vice-captain, following a solid tour to Australia, his best innings came in must-win games for India. In Hobart, with India needing to chase down Sri Lanka's target of 321 in 40 overs to stay alive in the Commonwealth Bank Series, Kohli delivered with 133 not out of 86 balls. His unbroken 120-run stand with Suresh Raina came at 13.09 runs an over, and got India home in 36.4 overs. Three matches later, he put in a similar performance during his 183 in the Asia Cup against Pakistan - there India were chasing 330, and his knock came off 148 balls as India won with over two overs to spare. In that period, Kohli scored four centuries and one fifty in five innings.

Would love to see this young guys play outside the sub-cont before he retires I think he will do ok. Batting stocks in Ind seem well filled right now, bowlers not so much. End should give him a real test soon, and I fear he may be up to the task.

Congratlutions from South Africa too !

There is no batsman we look forward to watching more when he come to the crease - We used to watch Bangalore for Kallis but now we support them for Kohli - hope he is Indias next captain !!

Some of those centuries for India were the best cricket to watch in recent years

The only serious competition for Kohli was Perrera from SL, who is certainly making waves. Gautam Gambhir and Unmukt Chand have been trained by the same coach. The coach emphatically proclaimed that Chand's skill set is higher than Gambhir. So, if Chand can somehow walk in Kohli's footsteps, we already know who is the next contender for this award.

Posted by bigdhonifan on (September 16, 2012, 6:26 GMT)

No main award for English and Aussies. LOL.

Posted by g.narsimha on (September 16, 2012, 6:06 GMT)

WOIW its amazing it appears KOHLI is having more PAK fans than any other player from IND at present which shows tatent doent remains in boundries other day i WAS wachinmg the GREAT KHAAN IMRAAN THE GREAT ON ND TV , he admitted that he still have more fans in ind than in pak , we too love greats from pak my favourite INZY, WASIM,

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 6:06 GMT)

Congrats to Kohli who has single handedly won matches from no hope situation. He deserves it.

Posted by Romenevans on (September 16, 2012, 5:39 GMT)

Virat is the only player in India whom i can praise without a doubt because of sheer class, passion and playing for the team under pressure and winning matches for the team....Not just so obsessed with Records. Stay rooted and keep yoru head down bro...you are on the way to glory and will be miles ahead of those "Records Obsessed" Indian players....everybody know whom im talking about! Virat and the all for life....Keep kicking bro! All the very best and pleaaaaaaaaase never leave this raw attitude on the field.

Kohli's one innings in Hobart was worth the award. Everything else is a bonus.

Posted by Narbavi on (September 16, 2012, 4:08 GMT)

@Praveen Shavindra Muthuthanthri : Sanga richly deserved the test player of the year award no doubt, but Amla also has scored runs all over the world in both formats, he deserved it much more!!

Posted by ac_Indian on (September 16, 2012, 4:08 GMT)

Congratulations to Virat.... keep this good work going.

Posted by mathewjohn2176 on (September 16, 2012, 3:37 GMT)

Well done virat, you deserved this award.Keep going ,it just a beginning for you.Congratulations.

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 3:10 GMT)

When a batsman scores 3000 runs in a calendar year, staying fit and performing consistently home and away. he is the 'cricketer of the year'. Amla and Philander have played mostly at home. while Sanga have played and scored all over the world. Amla has only played 8 odi's. can you judge on that.no. Sanga deserves it. and people's choice, Sanga won it last year too. it just means that even Indians haven't voted Sachin and the rest of the world, specially dear Pakistani's have voted for Sanga. Congratz Kholi. We Sri Lankans don't like your attitude, and also because you have to partially thank us for this award, scoring heavily against us.but honestly a run machine and a great batsman in the making in test matches also i feel. congratz

Posted by   on (September 16, 2012, 2:33 GMT)

Well done Virat. Your progress has been amazing. The fantastic attitude that you have developed must have helped you tremendously. Keep it up, young man. The cricketing world is proud of you.

True champion. I am SL supporter, and I used make my mind, when Kohli bashes our bowlers, saying, "that's Kohli, we cannot stop him". Good luck Kohli.

Posted by spot_on on (September 15, 2012, 23:54 GMT)

Lol @ Bangla fans... A couple of wins in their bag and they start throwing stats against a guy who has an avg of 70 and who keeps on piling up runs against the best teams. Just can't believe I'm hearing all of these.. When compared to Ireland Bangladesh is nothing after their tenure of 15 years against top teams. Unfortunate that a team like Kenya was not encouraged by the ICC.

Well deserved award! Just try to have Sachin's attitude many awards are waiting for you..... from Pakistan

Well done Kohli - truly deserving!! Your 183 againt Pak was awsome, although I was supporting Pak. Everytime I wondered how many did Kohli scored, found a hundred! Well played!

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 21:39 GMT)

This just about rounds up the great show you have put in the last year. Hope this motivates you to go grab the best test player award. You have all the makings of a great test batsman. Your batsmanship is a delight to watch....keep it going.

Posted by Hardy1 on (September 15, 2012, 21:14 GMT)

For those of you saying Amla deserved it: I don't think anyone's denying he's a brilliant batsman (probably the best right now) but no one scored more runs than Kohli in the qualifying period (including runs in difficult chases) and I highly doubt Amla had a much better average or strike rate. Either way it's good to see the likes of Amla, Kohli, Sanga, ABDV & Michael Clarke taking batsmanship forward.

Posted by Hardy1 on (September 15, 2012, 21:08 GMT)

Fully deserved. Not only has he made an astonishing number of runs but he's done it when it counted most, in hard fought wins chasing down large totals.

Posted by testcricfan24 on (September 15, 2012, 20:59 GMT)

Deserves it, incredible performances in last one year, he thrives under pressure. This is just the beginning, many more to follow, guy is a legend in the making.

Congratulations to Virat Kohli-the future of Indian cricket in all the formats. He is the best among the youngsters as he has the passion, dedication, commitment and application needed to convert the talent into reasonably regular performances, unlike others just to name one Rohit Sharma. Good Luck Virat for bright future.

he is just amazing to watch... currently Best young talent batesman ! Best wishes.. Wat to Goooo Kohli

Posted by MattyP1979 on (September 15, 2012, 18:01 GMT)

Very good one day player and could prove himself in tests too. With the old guard gone or going it is nice to see some real talent coming through. If only Ind could find some bowlers they could drag themselves from mid table and challenge other top nations.

Kohli... WHAT A PLAYER !!!! Magnificent young star. He has a bright future indeed. Love his attitude towards the game. Possibly a future India captain. Congratulations young man and keep rocking. God bless !

Kohli just started his career & grabbed ICC award so early is instrumental to say the least. I hope he continue like this. All the best wishes to him in future.

A thoroughly deserved one!! Keep the good work going, best wishes.

Shakib scored 590 runs with 49.16 avg and took 22 wickets in 15 matches during the qualifying period (4 Aug 2011 to 6 Aug 2012 )

Afridi scored 373 runs with 23.31 avg and took 32 wickets in 22 matches during that time

Even if you filter for the G8

Shakib scored 374 runs with 46.75 avg and took 16 wickets in 10 matches avg 24.06

Afridi scored 266 runs with 22.16 avg and took 19 wickets in 16 matches avg 33.36

ICC "neutral" panel's selection for ODI team of the year is a head-scratcher for sure.

Posted by adnan_rifat84 on (September 15, 2012, 16:24 GMT)

Being a Pakistani I never liked any Indian batsman, even Tendulkar, but Kohli really impressed me, the young talented guy, really best player for chasing any kind of target, he is full of passion, Kohli deserve this award really, but still few places I feel he have to work on like playing test and show little more maturity, but I think he is just a young guy who is learning it day by day, and he will become the best batsman of the world sooner or later if he keep playing like that.. Congratulations Kohli.

Posted by   on (September 15, 2012, 16:10 GMT)

To those who criticized Dhoni for being in Team Of The Year, look again he was also included in ODI player of the year. His average speaks for itself, despite some people bantering.

Well deserved. The maturing process surely helped in making the best use of his truly amazing talent. ( Traveled a long way, after Jennings made some remarks about Kohli's attitude in his early days with RCB. Even Jennings will vouch for Kohli's tremendous progress)

Kohli is like the jewel of the nile...

Posted by NatarajR on (September 15, 2012, 15:43 GMT)

Kohli - U deserve this award. You are a great cricketer and very good entertainer. India loves you.... Just that work on controlling ur patience which comes with experience.... By doing this we are sure u will reach great heights and u r the future of Indian cricket. U can shut the mouth of all the critics by perfoming with the bat rather than with the words... All the best...

Posted by khurramsch on (September 15, 2012, 15:30 GMT)

yes trulely deserving. he has been very goon in past year or so specially chasing. he is a true talent and i think more better and talented than many of past greats likle sehwag, tendulkar lara or any other. he will a be a good record breaker in future.

Posted by CricexpertSuresh on (September 15, 2012, 15:21 GMT)

The way he played last year it was obvious decision , Good to see ICC also recognized the best of the cricketer and awarding them for their hard effort... We will see most of the audience will start taking these award seriously..It will defiantly help Virat to boost his moral...Best of luck Virat and keep rocking...Scoring eight century and more than 1700 runs tells about his ability and how good form he is caring from last one and half years.. I hope he will keep his positiveness and score many more runs in Future and grow as a better cricketer...
