Result of ICC Code of Conduct hearing concerning Matthew Hayden

Australia batsman Matthew Hayden has been severely reprimanded and fined 20 percent of his match fee ($2200) after being found guilty of a breach of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Code of Conduct.

Hayden was charged with a Level 1 offence, point 1.2 which sites as punishable: "Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings."

The charge related to the breaking of glass in the team's dressing room door after Hayden was dismissed on the fourth day of the fifth Orange Test match against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday (5 January 2003).

The hearing took place after play on Sunday evening and was attended by Hayden, ICC match referee Wasim Raja, umpires Dave Orchard, Russell Tiffin, Simon Taufel and Darrell Hair, Australia team manager Stephen Bernard and Australian Cricket Board Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland.

Wasim Raja said: "At the hearing Matthew Hayden admitted the offence and apologised for his action.

"Allowing for Matthew's previously clean record I decided the appropriate punishment is a severe reprimand and a fine of 20 percent of his match fee."

A Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct carries with it a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and/or a maximum penalty of a fine of 50 percent of a player or official's match fee.
