Gautam Gambhir shows some discomfort, Mumbai v Kolkata, Eliminator, IPL 2011, Mumbai, May 25, 2011

Gautam Gambhir could miss the limited-overs leg of India's tour of the West Indies next month following the aggravation of a shoulder injury that was sustained during the World Cup final. Gambhir, named India's captain for that part of the tour, has been advised four to six weeks' rest by Andrew Leipus, the Kolkata Knight Riders trainer, and could even miss the subsequent tour of England.

If it comes to pass, Gambhir's absence will leave India without their three best specialist openers - Virender Sehwag has recently undergone shoulder surgery and Sachin Tendulkar has been rested for the short-format games. It will also fuel the debate over the importance given to the IPL vis-a-vis international cricket, and - given that Sehwag also played through the IPL with his injury - raise questions over the responsibility of the BCCI, the IPL franchises and the players.

Gambhir played the IPL Eliminator on Wednesday, the same day Leipus wrote to the BCCI. However, Kolkata's loss to Mumbai Indians has saved Gambhir and the franchise from having to decide on his further participation in the tournament.

In his letter, addressed to BCCI secretary N Srinivasan, Leipus - a former India physio - said the player felt acute pain in his right shoulder while landing on it in the field at one point during the World Cup final against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede stadium on April 2. Subsequent scans have now revealed a serious injury that would require him to avoid throwing or batting for four to six weeks.

"Gautam arrived in Kolkata at the start of the IPL complaining of a 'sore shoulder', the onset of which occurred during the World Cup final," Leipus' letter said. "He clearly recollects a fielding incident where he landed on an outstretched arm and felt a catch deep in the shoulder. In the euphoria at the time, his attention was deservedly elsewhere and he didn't bother telling anyone about it."

... And a groin injury too

  • Andrew Leipus' note to the BCCI also mentioned a chronic groin injury Gambhir has been carrying for two years and suggested the player underwent rehab for both the shoulder and groin problems simultaneously but stressed that he needed "active" and "daily" attention. "Both injuries are chronic and ideally require time away from the stresses of international cricket in order for them to settle and rehabilitate properly. I emphasise, however, that such rehabilitation is active ... he would require almost daily professional supervision in order to provide both hands-on manual treatment in addition to the rehabilitation programme."

Gambhir, he said, informed him of the shoulder pain when he arrived to play the IPL. "His initial complaints were pain in the shoulder and significant reduction of power in his throw. The clinical findings supported the mechanism of the onset of the acute injury, however, he did report having corticosteroid injections on two occasions over the previous few years," Leipus stated in his report, a copy of which is available with ESPNcricinfo. "Knowledge of this history leads me to suspect that any internal derangement may have been pre-existing and this recent incident (World Cup final) only served to aggravate or progress the injury (i.e. acute on chronic)," Leipus wrote.

Accordingly, Leipus said, he initiated a plan for management and rehabilitation, post which Gambhir only reported pain "intermittently". But during Kolkata's final group match at Eden Gardens on May 22, against Mumbai Indians, Gambhir winced in pain immediately after sending back a throw to the wicketkeeper from the deep. Leipus confirmed that the throw had "aggravated" the pain. The team then travelled for the Eliminator to Mumbai, where Gambhir consulted a prominent Mumbai-based surgeon and had an MRI scan taken.

"Both the doctor and myself believe that he should follow an intensive, supervised and conservative rehabilitation pathway. But for the best outcome, he will need to avoid both throwing and batting for a period of 4-6 weeks. In this regard I would expect that the BCCI medical committee would need to consider the ongoing management of Gautam's shoulder injury beyond the IPL and the possibility of his missing any immediate future tours until the shoulder is fully rehabilitated," Leipus said.

If Gambhir does indeed sit out that tour, Suresh Raina, appointed vice-captain, is likely to take over the leadership role.

problem is IPL itself, firstly it is so long & strenous,it drains out indian international players & secondly the huge money it offers, much more than international cricket, that is why Indian international players are playing in IPL through injuries like sehwag, gambhir, yuvraj and other like Tendulakar, Dhoni and Zaheer they played whole of IPL and opting out from WI international tour! this is the not the first time IPL is hurting Indian international cricket, IPL2 and IPL3 made India crash out of follow up World T20 in early stages in 2009 and 2010. still no lessons learnt! this is real SHAME for indian cricket. the only remedy for this solution is to make IPL short 2 week competetion rather than 6-7 weeks and they should reduce the money offered in IPL to lower than what Indian international players make. that would help indian international players to choose country over club, unless that happens all real cricket lovers who love international cricket should boycott watching IPL

it should be better to select SHIKHAR DHAWAN as a replacement for gambhir.... because dhawan is a superb player and he got only one match chance.. please don't select MURALI VIJAY.... i'm from tamilnadu also... he is wasting one spot in playing eleven... lots of chances are given to him... but he even made one fifty in superb batting indian conditions....

Now everybody wants to throw in their one cent worth of opinion on the issue regarding players getting injured in the hectic Indian cricket calendar. Injuries are part and parcel of every players' game and no one should be blamed for playing in IPL as they earn their living plaing cricket. If one is paid handsomely to represent their club in the IPL then why fault them? Come on have more common sense rather than ruled by your head than the mind. No one will skip an International game to play for their club and earn mega bucks. It is their bread and butter and by snubbing their chance to make some mega bucks by playing for their club in the IPL one is giving the god given chance a miss which they will regret for life. After all not all cricketers are like Sachin who is always in form. If one is not in form I am sure no club will pay huge amount of money to get them to play for them. So guys give the cricketers some breathing space and stop being arm chair critics

Rayudu should get a look in, at least now. For those who talk about Ranji performances, Rayudu along with Yusuf Pathan had pushed a mediocre Baroda into the finals

Posted by   on (May 27, 2011, 6:01 GMT)

There was this unnecessary row over players choosing IPL over country. Level of competition, value addition of competing with the world's best (even for a T20 contest) against some meaningless bilateral ODI series after series. Players still want to play tests and test themselves at diff conditions against diff opposition over 5 days. Its challenging for them but its getting to be a challenge to get spectators to the ground and even free tickets to school children only could get a few thousands at some venues. At the end of the day what players want is competition, spectators and some value addition. So best to test some youngsters to WI and give them a chance rather than stretching, already overstretched seniors.

ipl is spoiling indian talents also, well its upto players to choose between Nation and a franchisee...

Posted by   on (May 27, 2011, 5:19 GMT)

Now we must think to drop all such players who play IPL after having injuries (for getting handsome money) and then got out on account of injury from offcial tours. India is huge country and there are number of young talented players who can be selected for official tours resting (for ever) such players who give more importance to MONEY than country.

How about giving paul valthaty a chance ??

Posted by   on (May 27, 2011, 3:40 GMT)

This is the correct time to place Robin Uthappa inside the team... He is doing his best in IPL matches.. now he is in better look and he is suitable as a opener too..

How have the times changed...... 10-15 years ago, a tour to the WI would have been one of the most important events on cricketing calendar. Now, everybody is queuing up to give it a miss. Can't forget Kumble bowling with a broken jaw at Lara. Agreed, most of the stars would be back for tests, and WI is nowhere near the force it once was. Indian cricketers are playing too much cricket, making it impossible for them to remain in shape for every tour. I hope the selectivism is curtailed to only ODIs, the most director competitor to T20. As for IPL, BCCI has unleashed a demon which is here to stay. We will see more of club vs country and money vs patriotism in future. For the opening slot in tests, if GG is not fit by then, Mukund should be tried out and groomed. He is easily the most exciting opening-bat prospect.

Shikar Dhawan should replace Gautam Gambhir.

There has been quite a lot of cricket in the past few months... its normal for energy levels to be down. atleast i am tired of seeing more matches .. . don't blame the cricketers.. . Its just like taking a day off on a fine monday morning.. . Common guys dont be too harsh because these guy's careers are in the spotlight. . .

@bismoy Can u tell who is technically strong as dravid in the current Indian team to the carribean who can manage the short pitch deliveries??? Kohli, yuvraj, rohit can counter the bounce but only to certain extent.

Posted by gottalovetheraindance on (May 27, 2011, 1:51 GMT)

bcci need to get their priorities right. i always support India when they are not playing vs West Indies. But with what is happening now i strongly hope that India get player burn out like England in the world cup & lose their number 1 status. the way Bcci is behaving India does not deserve the #1 spot! imagine they have been playing cricket almost non stop since last October & still senior players went & played in ipl? some of them played ipl carrying serious injury as well!! they deserve whatever comes their way!!

NO NO NO NO.. This is unbelievable. Although, im a strong supporter of IPL but these kind of things disturb me. I just hope the champ is fit for the england series. Coming to the captaincy issue, i think Virat should be given the captaincy ahead of Raina. Though Raina is a very good player i think Virat is more captaincy material and he should be groomed for the furture once Dhoni decides to hang his boots. Cheers.

If Gambhir fought through pain to play in the IPL then he better do the same and captain India in the West Indies.

Posted by Raj12345 on (May 26, 2011, 19:34 GMT)

To be honest, the opportunity should be given to Mukund. He is future opening batsman for india in all format.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 19:10 GMT)

This just annoys me so much! Gambhir deserves a reprimand of some kind. You can't just pull out of international tours because of injury, but soldier on through the IPL with an injury. That is just unacceptable!

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 19:02 GMT)

THINKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been a few weeks that Gambhir has played with his injury. Owing to his injury sustained at the world cup final, his sore muscles would have already begun to lose their water content, turn stiff and hence they are more prone for injury in the future. If he continues playing/throwing with that shoulder, he can expect a muscle/tendon rupture in future. And, mind you, you ll have to stay 3-6 months off sport after a tendon repair surgery. Gambhir is not the only player carrying such risks. Every player who cramps often at field but persists to play ignoring their on field injuries, lackadaisical at improving their fitness, are prone for injury in future. We all know what's happening to Raina and Dhoni on field.THINK BCCI!!!! ......David, Physical Therapist.

The team to West Indies lacks quality openers; it is sad that Partiv Patel is considered as an opener, with Gambir's exit, selectors are challenged to find a proper replacement . While Murali Vijay will be the obvious choice, we should try Abinav Mukund for his consistent performance or Valthathy for his ability to bowl fast medium apart from opening or even Manoj Tiwari or Rayudu or Utappa. Though a very fair selection committee, selectors can always bring surprises; recently Umesh Yadav, Undakat toured South Africa; where are they now..... Since 1966 I follow cricket, there were many benchers selected such as Moghul, Jeejeebhoy, Sudhakar Rao and many 1 test heros who all vanished after their selection. BCCI believes in "Golden EGG" story; don't make cricketers slave to them and money, limit their match participation so that they can sustain long. When BCCI can have round the year cricket for money, let us not blame cricketers for playing IPL for money. Still cricket is a great game

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 17:52 GMT)

Bones, agreed. Very astute point about the IPL becoming a feeder for the India team. However, Abhinav Mukund may get picked in the IPL next year and be a future India selection.

@iata123:opener should b replaced by another opener..even parthiv is not a genuine opener..if not vijay try other openers like shikar, mukund etc..tiwary suits middle order well..he deserves a place but not as opener

Posted by G.Vinoth on (May 26, 2011, 17:30 GMT)

A Very good opportunity for Suresh Raina! He is a fine allrounder. I am sure he would have learned many things from MSD. He has already captained when india went against zimb. He couldnt make it in the ODI's due to the poor bowling attack we had that time. But still he has done it for us in the T20 game. So, i strongly beleive, Raina going to be success this time and prove everyone that, he will do it when he gets chance.

I don't question the loyalty of country vs. club in this scenario. Players are cashing in on their name and fame to make some easy money in the IPL. Injuries not that serious can be concealed, but can be found out on the Test field. I don't grudge them one bit.

Posted by bismoy on (May 26, 2011, 16:03 GMT)

@Harish Saran .... Indian team selection should be based on merit not weather player is nice or not..

India won the wc without we miss him??? not at why to bring 38 year age struggling batman....Why not give opportunity to youngster???

Take example to Kohli,,,,he is better version of dravid....can score heavily with good techinque....

Infact high time dravid retire test....He can score only in indian pitches,,,,not abroad any more...(sl series,SA Series and Aus Series are example)...For dravid fans please stop glorifying your hero past act.

@Bones5198, his record is amazing and he is very young and he is the opener for U19 world cup which India won under Virat Kohli. It is pity that no one knows about him.

Posted by svinodmenon on (May 26, 2011, 15:41 GMT)

We can opt for Chris Gayle to the opening slot as he was denied a contract with WI board, lol.

Ipl owened by Bcci, Players owned by Franchise, What Gambir can do. When they allow sehwag they should allow Gambir. Overall we are not consentrating more on the WI tour as we have rested all the senior players. So hopefully Gambir can be rested as well. If Sachin can be replaced in Odi team then we can replace any indian players with others.

My replacement for Gambir would be Abinav Mukund/Rahane

Posted by gottalovetheraindance on (May 26, 2011, 15:38 GMT)

West Indies should look at this as an opportunity to give the world cup champions a good hammering. who knows maybe Bcci will mend its ways and give priority to international cricket rather than ipl. The money they are pumping into ipl they should be using it to develop their first class and one day club structure so that they can stay as world number 1 for a long time. but currently according to where bcci priorities lie they wont stay there for long after Dravid Sachin Laxman, Sehwag and Zaheer retire.

this shoes gambhir's true colour.if he is injured in wc final,he should have told it before.telling the next day after being eliminated from ipl is not fair.gambhir should not only be a part of wi tour he should also be dropped for 2 to 3 series for his action.he prefers money over country.people life UTHAPPA who is longing to play for india should be given a chance.yuvi should be made the captain not raina.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 15:19 GMT)

I think it should have been reported just after the WC seems its all fake..6 week rest wud have been over by now.....players play IPL for the sake of money despite of injury n den dey deny to play for the nation....

You cannot commit yourself for IPL and International assignments at the same time. 14 matches during a month in IPL, daily training schedules, demand of the coaches and traveling is too much for these poor guys. But than they have to stay in the game for next year contract. Playing for the country is an honour and much more important than a club match. Now if India lose the one day series against WI what will be the reaction of an Indian fan especially after winning the World Cup?

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 14:49 GMT)

Its sad to know that player like gambhir is giving importance to money than his country.after knowing that he is captain of indian team he needed to take break from few league games just like dhoni did last year when he missed 4-5 games because of injury..i thought throught ipl he was giving too much importance to kkr once he said im not delhi guy im kkr guy lol..nways indias got lot of talent instead make kohli new captain and select proper repalcements like uthappa or pujara

This kind of Injuries have been happening for quiet a while specially Players get injured just at the end IPL... specially Praveen Kumar/Munaf(ok i accept he had a history of poor fitness even before IPL)/Nehra(same league as Munaf), Sachin likes to keep himself fresh for Test after playing T20's(sure some one will be irked by this).

It is time to give Pujara a chance in ODIs. A solid batsman never hurt anyone. Dravid did extremely well for many years in ODIs, and was instrumental for India's success. Pujara can fill the same role.

It is unfortunate that both Sehwag and Gambhir will be out for the forthcoming tour of West Indies due to injuries. Abhinav Mukund and Ajinkya Rahane should be considered even if as a make shift opener Parthiv Patel is quite useful.I am not in a position to say whether were right in playing in the IPL and getting injured in the process. I feel that if they were destined to get injured it would have happened anyway.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 13:42 GMT)

If Gambhir is to be blamed, then Sehwag, Dhoni, Bhajji,Zak all are to be blamed. Sachin needs rest but, he also could have got that by not playing in IPL. There was a chance for it if only BCCI wanted that. Not a surprise that BCCI should be blamed the most.

In that particular series he scored nearly 300 runs and averaged nearly 85. Mind you it was a one day series. Later on he represented for India-A several times and done decently well. Since he was severly disturbed by the politics, his career got badly affected and thus he couldnot catch up with the sensation beginning. He can play on any kind of wickets...He is slowly coming into the olden days...True 42 average is not upto the mark, but u need to understand the reality of the extreme pressure he has undergone. So, he deserves a place in the Indian team.

Posted by harshalb on (May 26, 2011, 13:35 GMT)

First of all Indians specially Kannadigas and Tamilians should avoid peddling names of their local players to replace Gambhir or anyone else. There is a selection panel which is very well aware of who is to be selected. The attitude of people to immediately start suggesting their local favorites is exactly same as the regional bias which we accuse selectors of. The debate is about Gambhir's injury and the causes, it is NOT about sending Mukund or Badrinath or Dosappa. PERIOD.

Give captaincy to Badri because raina still no mature to handle captainship,as a captain badri having good experience at the domestic level and india A team so don't be hesitate ultimately team need to win the series ,also we need to catch first rank in ODI if we loss this series then problem for us

Posted by Bones5198 on (May 26, 2011, 12:57 GMT)

Abinav Mukund should be the one to replace him at the top order, if an average of 57 in domestic one day doesn't get you selected it's madness. That dwarfs Uthappa's 33. Just because he didn't play much in the IPL, he will sadly be overlooked in most discussion here.

Posted by MeeraKrishna on (May 26, 2011, 12:46 GMT)

I think BCCI needs to take strict disciplinary action against this attitude...had he complained about the pain immediately after the WC, the 4-6 week of rest would have been over by now..this is as if he has given fake fitness to the board at the time of WI team selection...

Parthiv Patel will open with Badrinath. The middle order will have Raina, Yuvraj, and Kohli, The lower order will be Yusuf, and Rohit Sharma and the bowlers will be Harbhajan, Ishant, Praveen, Ashwin/Patel

The youngster were able to win us 2011 WC.....If we have Dravid probaly 2007 would have repeated ....Thankfully even dravid knows his chances of making into ODI Side is same as Sunil Gavaskar making into indian team now...

These kind of players need to be dropped and dont deserve a place in the Indian team! Is IPL more importnant than India? Its not as if they arent getting money when playing for India. They get loads! Players like Gambhir and Sehwag just need to learn a lesson. Look at players like Clarke and Johnson. They have stated clearly that country is their priority. Shameful on the Indian openers part. Then why did Gambhir play IPL? Instead of running behind money he should have opted out of IPL and should have worked towards his fitness and made himself available for Team India's commitments.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 11:54 GMT)

First Viru, now Gambhir.I can atleast accept players playing in IPL and then asking for some rest. They are humanbeings and ll consider lucrative money in the IPL. But playing with injury in IPL and not telling anybody cant be accepted at all. Will the injury wont be aggravated if he plays in a hectic IPL? It may even affect a player's future..They are mainly responsible for this and consider their physical well being much above money and IPL franchise.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 11:51 GMT)

He is the costliest player of IPL-4 and would not stop playing it, even if both hands were chopped off. Let alone, injured. Love for the game you reckon ?!

Posted by ravi_hari on (May 26, 2011, 11:29 GMT)

Surely money has taken precedence to nation. Players have chosen to play in the IPL despite injuries. It is only for money. Not only Gambhir and Sehwag, many Australian, Sri Lankan and other country players played knowing very well that they migh aggravate their injuries. I think IPL is set to spoil the sport and might go the Packer way very soon! For the West Indies tour, I like the idea of picking Dravid as captain. However, if you are looking for a futuristic role, pick Rayudu and make Kohli the Vice captain. If would be a good learning for both of them and Rayudu will get a chance to prove his prowess. This is absolutely ridiculuous!! theys guys played in IPL with injuries sustained in world cup and missing international comitments!! All are after money and BCCI dont care. Cricket has become a complete business. Dhoni is rested, Tendulkar et all rested.. but they dont need rest from IPL? let all player take their own decisions as to play for whom..and let there be no one to control them or BCCI.. ....SHAME!!

Just like Sehwag, he also played the ipl rather then do the surgery after the WC had finished.

And people complain about Gayle, Malinga, Pollard etc not being loyal to their countries.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 11:06 GMT)

Kohli should be given the captaincy. Badrinath has not had chance to be with his teammates long. Even though he captained tamilnadu ranji team, he has no that much talent to guide india now. Even at 22 years, graeme smith was given the SA cataincy. Hence, Kohli is a better choice than raina.

BCCI call for Dravid............Nice Man

Posted by harshacc on (May 26, 2011, 11:03 GMT)

Drop Gauti(If proved he has knowledge of injury) for three ODI/Test or a 6 month ban series.Ban Leipus from ever doing anything affliated with BCCI in India if found complicit. If KKR Management is found complicit then fine them heavily and drop them out of the play off spots for Champions league. The same treatment meted out to Gauti should also be treated out to Sehwag.Lets see how many endorsements they do when they are out of the Indian team.

Posted by Hraig on (May 26, 2011, 10:58 GMT)

This is total failure of the system of IPL, franchises greediness, this don`t happen in football leagues if a player is injured either he should not himself or franchisee should not allow him to play but in this case KKR owners have forced Gambhir to play games. Badrinath or Rayudu should be the replacement for him.

Posted by KingshukMazumder on (May 26, 2011, 10:55 GMT)

Why not appoint Yuvraj Singh, as captain, for ODIs in West Indies?

Posted by STARFISH14 on (May 26, 2011, 10:51 GMT)

Ambati Rayudu should replace Gautam Gambhir for the tour WI tour and Yuvraj should lead the side

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 10:49 GMT)

Now Robin Uttappa should be given a chance to prove his talent

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 10:44 GMT)

can everyone shut up about rayudu, he isnt good enough to be taking up a slot in the top 6 unless he is also wicket keeping and that would only be when dhoni is resting, none of his stats are overly impressive, he avg 42 in 1st class, 30 odd in one day domestic and around 30 in IPL. Just because he had a solid IPL doesnt mean he should leapfrog high quality batsman like badrinath(who had a better IPL then rayudu) replace ghambir with saurabh tiwary and he can rest on sidelines, untill an injury he did nothing wrong in the ODI's he played. Give badrinath a go at opening to see how good he can perform at international level, give him 50 overs to bat , not 15 overs, give him time to make a hundred or 150. My team with current squad would be Badrinath, Kohli (capt), Rohit.S, Yuvraj, Raina, Saha(not parthiv) Y.Pathan(floater/finisher), Harbhajan, P. kumar, Ashwin, Ishant.S. Team will rely on badri and kohli + yuvraj to score bulk of runs!!! WI is easy team to beat so doesnt matter!!

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 10:35 GMT)

WI series telecasted by TenCricket which is owned by Zee who is the backbone of the Flopped rival Indian Cricket League...

Just remember the last time, when Raina was captaining Indian team, it was telecasted by Ten Cricket and India played badly in the tournament.

Now you know why MSD, Sachin, Zaheer and Gambhir are not playing against WI...

Posted by steppenwolf on (May 26, 2011, 10:28 GMT)

Perfect opportunity for the new batch......Kohli should captain the side and Badrinath should open with Saha. Kohli has worked with Gayle for a while now, so that would be an added bonus when it comes to dealing with the big guy, assuming he'll be playing of course! Young Indian squad vs young Windies squad should set up a great contest....

Posted by ssruprai on (May 26, 2011, 10:05 GMT)

I fear under Raina's captaincy India might suffer same fate as they had suffered when they toured Zimbabwe under Riana. Team was almost similar. Dinish Karthick and Murli Vijay really messed up start in every match. India lost to Zimbabwe twice and Sri Lanka once in that tri-series.

Why cannt we select Ambati Rayudu for the opening slot?.He has been performong well with batting for Mumbai Indians and he can do the wicket keeping that we can add a extra bowler or batsmen.

Posted by   on (May 26, 2011, 9:22 GMT)

Oh please, Ambati Rayudu deserves a go at the international level. He's done reasonably well in Ranji and pretty well in the IPL too. His talent is rather undisputed.

Posted by P.Srikanth on (May 26, 2011, 9:19 GMT)

If BCCI decides on giving Raina the captaincy role, then it is sheer complaceny for the West Indies tour. May be they have to call back M.S.Dhoni for national duty, becuase it is important than IPL. If he is not ready, then they must consider giving it to Yuvraj Singh. Raina could not be a better captain, when he lead a young team to Zimbabwe and could not even succeed with him. Regarding opener choice, they should try with A.T.Rayudu who is also a good fielder.

Even public is fed up of watching too much cricket. At this rate most of our celebrated players would be nursing injuries heading for rehab centre!

I hope badrinath and m.tiwary gets a chance. Pls stop giving rohit sharma all the chances. There are better consistent players available in the domestic circuit. Give bajji the rest and try the games with aswin or abdulla or rahul sharma.

All this talk about IPL paying more money in case of indian internationals is kind of ridiculous. If you look at the numbers they can earn just as much if not more by just endorsing a few products here and attending the opening ceremony over there. Gambhir isn't the sort of guy who would risk an injury for 2.4mil. Not that i know him personally, but he doesn't come across as a person who would be blind to the obvious.

Posted by AllwinJ on (May 26, 2011, 8:00 GMT)

Shah Rukh is really smart. By saying that he got injured during an India match, the expense of the treatment will be on BCCI and not KKR.

Posted by Ashique129 on (May 26, 2011, 7:39 GMT)

I really don't know what to say. Players playing in the IPL with injuries, and then missing out on international cricket? Then, some key players are rested for the international matches after they play ALL games in the IPL? This is an embarrassment for cricket all over the world. IPL is replacing international cricket little by little. The money is too powerful to be denied, and seems like no one really cares.

Posted by BULTY on (May 26, 2011, 7:28 GMT)

Gambhir's injury has become a juicy subject for the media which is, as usual, blowing it out of proportion. Now the media report says BCCI is aware of Gambhir's injury through a letter delivered to it on May 23rd. Why didn't they prevent Gambhir from taking further part in the IPL? Everyone involved in this episode is equally to be blamed. This is where the importance of what I mentioned in an earlier post that the IPL franchisees must get registered with the BCCI. It's not late now. They should ask all franchisees to get registered immediately if they are to prevent key national players from being unavailable for national duty. Players tend to give more than 100% for IPL than when they are playing for the country; for example, we have seen how lazy & lethargic a fielder Munaf is when playing for the country and look at his fielding in yesterday's match. Many other instances can be quoted. IPL has to be urgently brought under the umbrella of the BCCI to protect the game & the players.

This is all drama. When it comes to money all players are fit and ready to play IPL but when it comes to International cricket they suddenly come up with a two month old injury. KKR , BCCI knew about it but they spent 2 million dollar on Guatam how could he miss IPL. This is insane , 75 matches in IPL are too much, players will get injured but keep on playing for big money. Too much pressure. Bad for cricket on long terms.

anyone find it funny that the WC injuries to players are showing up just at the end of the IPL season and before the next international tour? any coincidence that these are some of the highest paid players - gauti @ 2.1 MM .. caught_knot.... but u are missing the point - i dont think we can produce players for country based on t20 performance - its hardly the yardstick. domestic cricket as flawed as it may be is a much better yardstick even if it doesnt pay as much. isnt that the bottomline however nowadays?

Its a joke that u are calling for dravid for u will ask for Ravi Shastri or!!! there are many other young players who deserve a chance.. and if you want technique, ask sehwag or dhoni about its importance... clearly you took a break from cricket last two years or your knowledge is shallow...

Virat Kohli should make himself cool in field. Thats most important for a captain. You can be aggressive but should not show your anger on the field always tapping your bowlers(Afridi) for each delivery even the senior bowlers.

The wall(Rahul Dravid) can be recalled as a replacement for gambhir because we need someone technically strong to counter attack the bouncy tracks in the carribean. The Windies will target the men in blue with shot pitch deliveries for sure, So minus the regular picks like sachin, dhoni, gambhir and sehwag , the selector can choose the wall back. Remember in the t20 world cup in the carribean we where tested with short pitch deliveries, where the boys struggled.

Gambhir gets paid $2.4Million for 2 months of IPL!! International Cricket does not pay that kind of money. Its that simple. What we're witnessing is merely a change in the hierarchy of cricket - with IPL being at the pinnacle, in a commercial sense. The good thing is many more cricketers are getting an opportunity to play now and get paid well for it. As a result, we've got 20-30 players who can be playing for India in a given year in various formats. Nothing wrong with that. And honestly, after 15-20 years of watching Tendulkar, Dravid, I'd rather watch some fresh talent coming through. The 2007 T20 WC was brilliant for that very reason. I say, give Harbhajan some rest too.

With Gambhir now gone, who could be the captain? First those who shouldn't: Yuvraj, Harbhajan and even Raina. We saw how Yuvraj captains in the IPLs. Raina's stint wasn't all that encouraging. Harbhajan - just let him bowl. Give it to Kohli, he seemed fairly calm captaining RCB. Or do something unorthodox and make Badri the captain. He has done the hard yards in domestic Cricket. He deserves to be in the team and also deserves to be the captain, given the circumstances. Or something even more radical, call Dravid and make him the captain only this once. He was in great nick in the IPL with Rajasthan, he is fit, he is the ex Captain - been there done that and hence could be asked to help out. And if Dravid is not considered at all for the ODI team even purely for this series, and then whoever becomes the captain, Rayyudu should take Gambhir's place in the team.

Just for the sake of IPL players and BCCI put India`s pride on stake. They don`t even think of the condition of WORLD CHAMPIONS losing their first ODI series just after the world cup. Why Gambhir and Sehwag opt to continue playing after having these kind of serious injuries. I don`t really think that players opt for playing as it should be the BCCI`s pressure to force them play in IPL as they know without these kind of players the IPL will be a failure. Players can make money more than IPL in ads during this period as they are world champs and heroes. We people should stop going to stadiums and watching IPL matches on TV so that BCCI understand that we want these players to play for INDIA not for local cities. We want international cups and winning test series not IPL champs.

I said at the time when team was announced that why Gambhir wasn't rested. He like other senior players has been playing non-stop cricket. What happened to him was inevitable. This year IPL was completely unnecessary. Lack of common sense is hurting the team. But then "Common Sense is a rare sense".

Posted by   on (May 25, 2011, 20:35 GMT)

Blame it on IPL or International cricket, point is we play too much of cricket. Players are humans and not machine to last for ever. BCCI should draft a balance schedule allowing players sufficient rest and time for their personal lives. Just because the fans crave for cricket and money being available in surplus one must not forget that this much of cricket is emotionally and physically damaging. Just thinking has the cricket gone too far where players don't play it for the game but for the money!!!!

Why everyone blaming Players for playing in IPL? Even if they get injured there are bunch of players available in the bench. If the bench players plays well then automatically all the "rested" player will come back as their place will be "insecure"...This is the best way to promote competition.. Otherwise we never see Raina,Kohli,Pujara consistently in the international squad.Classical example is lean & fit Yuvi due to competition for him in the squad ..Lets promote more quality players and stop worrying about individual past superstars

Gambhir shouldn't have played ipl if he had an injury even though i am from kolkata, playing for india is much more important!

Our openers out for low TRP ratings and Shah Ruck Khan's stupidity?! 3 Tests at WIndies and 4 in England! We can't have Dinesh Karthik opening again! Let Raina and others do whatever they want during the One Dayers. Nothing would be more shameful than missing a chunk of the Test Team during the matches which are going to count like hell this year. We have Australia in December...

A good chance for Raina to lead the team and develop his captaincy skills :-) As this is much a young bunch of cricketers it will be easy for him too..
