Gujarat Lions have signed allrounder Irfan Pathan as a replacement for Dwayne Bravo, who was ruled out of the 2017 IPL with a hamstring injury. Irfan, who was unsold at the auction in February at a base price of INR 50 lakhs, posted a photograph of himself wearing a Lions jersey on Twitter, and said he was "looking forward to be part of this wonderful unit."

Irfan, 32, has been part of five IPL franchises - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rising Pune Supergiant - in the past. He has 80 wickets from 102 IPL games, apart from 1137 runs at a strike-rate of 120.57. However, he had a poor run with Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016, scoring 11 runs in three innings and going wicketless in the eight overs he bowled.

Lions had hoped Bravo, who did not play a match this season, would be available for the second half of the tournament. He was undergoing rehabilitation in Rajkot, but couldn't recover in time. "While recovery is going well and I have made vast improvement and have participated in team trainings with the Lions, my body is not ready to perform at its fullest potential," Bravo had said in a statement.

Lions also lost left-arm wristspinner Shivil Kaushik for the rest of the season through injury. Kaushik's replacement was 23-year-old Ankit Soni, an allrounder from Mumbai.

After making the playoffs last year, Lions are currently in seventh place, with two wins from seven games.

Nice to hear Lions have signed up Irfan Pathan as replacement for Bravo. Irfan should be given more opportunity in the playing 11. He could swing the ball and attack with the bat also. He is a fine all rounder with positive attitude. I want to see Irfan playing the entire IPL season for 2017. Long wait to see a finest player.

irfan pathan finally clears the air....he says that greg chappell did not ruin his career but the injuries did....in fact greg chappell laid the foundation for india finally becoming no. 1 in all formats...he was the one because of whom the new generation players entered the team got experience and confidence and flourished...if he was not our coach at that point of time...dravid ganguly vvs et al would have played instead in the t20 wc and odi wc and also the tri-series in aus and we would not have won any of these...

Poor form in 2016, he hardly got a game last year and the year before. Ridiculous that a player if his ability is being ignored by the board on a regular basis, and that too when a below par Ishant and Aaron keeps making it to the playing 11. Same goes to binny, apart from a 6 wicket haul against Bangladesh, what has he got in his kitty?

Irfan should start thinking if moving to England and play county crixket, rather than wastimg his time and talent in hope of making it to the national side or even an IPL side for that matter.

All said and heard, been there and seen there - IP can look up to certain ZaheerKhan! Given current GL squad limitation, IP deserves 2 games any day before the likes of over hyped Ishan Kishan, ever unfit AD Nath, low esteem Kaushik and over rated Jakati. ANYDAY.

Irfan !The PATHAN! at 32 , can be a good prospect for Gujarat Lions he has grown a lot in his situation analysing and leadership skills as shown in recently concluded domestic season for Baroda .He has been quite a handful all-rounder for them , and it makes the selection committee job much easier to pick Dwayne Smith as a full time batsman and Andrew Tye as a specialist bowler leaving Faulkner as backup.

    Best Wishes @Irfan Pathan

@ilamuhilAmuthavan: Pujara didn't get as many chances as the others in the IPL to rectify his record but Irfan got more than a plenty of matches & earned millions. Just take a look at how many matches has he won for his team in 9 years of IPL history, you'll know how brilliant he has been. Irfan the genuine all rounder was lost around the last days of Chappell's coaching days. He's been more or less a bogey every since.

1 foot forward 2 steps back. Nice going GL. @paramnp9: LOL !!! He can hardly touch 130km these days & you're talking about 135 :p The last time I saw him, the fastest ball he bowled was 127kmph. @VRDBB: You can't ride on past glories bud. Long long ago once up on a time, there was a cricketer called X, he won xy matches. So, let him be in the team for the next 30 years, what if he doesn't perform, he did in the past rite, that should guarantee him his berth. Just like Marsh brothers for Aus, whom they seem to have too much fond for even if they don't perform constantly.
