Sachin Tendulkar, who announced his retirement from ODIs on Sunday, has decided to skip Mumbai's last Ranji Trophy league game but has made himself available for the knockout stages should the 39-times champions progress to the quarterfinals.
"I asked him [Sachin Tendulkar] if he was available but he said since he is on a break, he won't be able to play [the Gujarat game]. But he has made himself available for the knockouts," Mumbai Cricket Association joint secretary Nitin Dalal said.
Mumbai would have received a big boost had Tendulkar, who had scored a century in Mumbai's season-opener against Railways last month, been available for the game against second-placed Gujarat that takes place at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai from December 29. If Ajit Agarkar's men, who garnerend six points in a tight match in Indore on Tuesday, have to progress to the knockouts, they will ideally be looking at registering their second successive victory.
Mumbai are placed third in the points table, tied on 20 points with Madhya Pradesh. They will have to at least secure a first-innings lead in order to be among the three teams that will progress to the last eight from the group. Punjab are at the top of the group with 32 points, but five teams are in contention for the remaining two slots.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai selectors, headed by chief national selector Sandeep Patil dropped Iqbal Abdulla. The left-arm spinner had put down a regulation catch on the boundary line which almost cost Mumbai the game. Paceman Dhawal Kulkarni, who was unfit for the MP game, has replaced Abdulla in the squad.
This is the second instance this season in which the Mumbai selectors have severely punished a player for dropping a catch. Medium pacer Kshemal Waingankar, whose reprieve helped Wriddhiman Saha earn Bengal a draw at the Brabourne Stadium, was axed after the game.

Sachin should have played this match. His presence would have definitely made a world of difference to a Mumbai side which needs all the luck it can have. If unfortunately Mumbai do not manage to make it to the knockouts, Sachin might never get a chance to play again for Mumbai (of course, no one knows when he will hang his boots in Ranji). This was a 'bird in the hand' situation for Sachin. It could have provided him with a chance to get into some sort of a form for the Australia test series as well.
The Indian People are just like the journalists. They always get some flaws. Now a 40-year Old guy is trying to be fit for those crucial games, but the people will take that as an excuse. And still if Sachin would've been playing this game then they had some words like, "Yeh buddah phir khelega". So basically Indians can't be happy with his success.. . If India loses in a match, where sachin scored 175, It's still his fault. . If India loses a match from Bangladesh for a target of 290, Sachin completing his 100th ton, he would be the key defect in him not the bowlers or the fielders. . . That's why Sachin always listens to his heart, not to anyone. . because he has to play his role, not the others... . . Sachin that's why you're so much successful not these people.. He could have done a lot to fix that, rather than get into the commentary box. Kumble does that by virtue of his administration. Laxman does that by virtue of his mentorship. Tendulkar, oh well, the less said the better.

There is no need to plead to him for play.I don't know why people fail to understand that he has only been playing for him and his record for last 4-5 years-not for India, not for his state.Why he played the Asia cup and kept on paying every odd ODI series after world cup? Reason-he wanted to complete 100 centuries.After that was achieved,he stopped playing ODI.What's the fuss over his ODI retirement when he was not playing ODI for almost a year?
Posted by StraightHit on (December 28, 2012, 16:37 GMT)Sachin, you may retire on 194 tests!. It has more charm to it than say, 200/201 tests, more like getting out on 99 rather than exactly 100. You need not be worried. There are not that many active players with over 150 tests and young enough to last another 5/6 years that are required to come close to 200. Your no. of tests record is still very safe.

Posted by tusharkardile on (December 28, 2012, 11:09 GMT)Sachin Tendulkar could have set a very good precedent by opting to play this game, especially when this is such a crucial one for Mumbai. Sachin is supposed to be a role model, so he should set the correct examples. And its not that he is coming back from a busy T20 schedule or an important ODI series is waiting for him. It has been a few days since he played his last competitive game. If he did not want to play this game of all the games, then the only better thing he can do is to retire from Ranji, and concentrate on what he really wants to do - if he knows what that is of course.
