Mathews named Sri Lanka Twenty20 captain

Angelo Mathews has been appointed Sri Lanka's Twenty20 captain for a period of one year starting with the Twenty20 against New Zealand at Pallekele on October 30. The 25-year-old allrounder succeeds Mahela Jayawardene, who quit the Twenty20 captaincy after the World Twenty20 final.

"We are giving Mathews a free hand to captain the T20 side for one year, after which we will review his performance," chief selector Ashantha de Mel said.

Mathews has been vice-captain since July last year, and is the most obvious candidate to be Sri Lanka's next captain in all forms. His elevation to the T20 captaincy is an indication that he remains the frontrunner for the Test and ODI captaincy.

The selectors may also have to name a new Test and ODI captain as early as February next year, with Jayawardene set to reassess his role as captain after Sri Lanka's tour of Australia. Jayawardene took the reins from Tillakaratne Dilshan in January, and has seen himself as a caretaker captain in that time, holding the position only until a younger team member is ready to lead.

Fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been named vice-captain, also for a one-year term.

New Zealand's tour to Sri Lanka includes two Tests and five one dayers, in addition to the one-off Twenty20.

SL needs a tough minded, tactical & inspiring captain who shows positive body language under pressure.Last one to see with above qualities was Arjuna not Mahela or Sanga.Angelo was a successful youth team captain.SL also needs a strong middle order who can play long innings & hit massive 4's and 6's at the end. Especially in No: 3,4, 5 and 6 Positions. At least no:5 & 6 batting positions should have seniors which is not the case today.SL also needs young opening pinch hitters like in mid 90's, not senior players opening the batting.SL also needs some fast bowlers who can bring the ball up to the chest height of batsmen accurately at 135-145 KPH in almost every delivery or bowlers who can swing both ways at 135-145 KPH all these are physically demanding tasks. Though Angelo becomes a good captain,SL needs a confident, power hitting & reliable middle order & fast bowlers with above capabilities & young opening pinch hitters. These can make SL win every series/every final even without luck.

why all of you blame malinga?he is giving the best to any team he plays.he also should earn money before he there is no problem in playing ipl.some people are saying that his best figures for ipl not for sl. it's because sl playing against international teams and ipl teams have just few good players and wkts are coming easily.

He is the only option for captain and he is very humble level headed guy not like dilshan!!! and stop whinging about the finals how he got out. WAIT mahela was set and reverse sweep got out.. thissara and jeevan ran them self out!!! yep angelo played sccop but if its connected every body whohoo what a great shot. get over people he is the ONLY option for srilanka and he will prove the heaters wrong.

This is a disaster for SL team. What is Mathews good at? He is average in all three departments. He does not have the class of Madugalle, Marvan, Mahlea or Sanga. He does not have the aggression of Mendis, Sanath or Dilshan. He is definitely not a tactician like Arjuna. Malinga as a vice captain. hahaha that must be a big joke.

This team is taken from cricinfo: Angelo Mathews (capt), Nuwan Kulasekara (vice-capt), Dilshan Munaweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (wk), Dinesh Chandimal, Jeevan Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Shaminda Eranga, Akila Dananjaya, Sachithra Senanayake, Upul Tharanga. Can any one tell me how a player who in not in the squad be a vice captain of the team? Or am I mistaken and we are talking about non playing vice captain ala the Ryder cup and Davis cup

Guys, Angi is T20I Capt. for SL, but Vice Capt. is niether Malinga nor Kulasekara. It has been given to Dinesh Chandimal and I would say he is a Good option on POV SL cricket.

Its good Angelo start at T20 captain, its high pressure and he will have his task cut out for the WT20 runners up. But the BIG QUESTION is who after Mahela in Tests and ODIs, would it be too soon for Angelo. History has see MAK Pataudi and Grame Smith lead thier countries in Tests in early 20s, what helped both was enormous talent and being 'men of steel'. Angelo has talent no doubt, but he needs to stay fit, determine if he wants to continue as an allrounder, especially in all formats and do the righ thing to not bowl in Tests and focus on batting and captiancy. What other choice does SL have, a lot of promising talent though none have stood out. I though Jeevan Mendis showed a cool and calm head and some great skills in the oppurtunities he has had and he will be my pick for vice captaincy.

Most of the past SL captains were classy stroke players, like Roy Dias, Wettamuni, Madugalle, Marvan Attapattu, Sangakkar and Mahela, but I can't see it from Angelo. He needs to improve that to become a classy captain to remember him for a long time. As a Srilankan we like to see stylish stroke players (Atapattu, Roy Dias), aggresive(Ranatunga) and entertainer( Jayasuriya). We all know Angelo is a fighter and never give up and he is a entertainer, just need to improve his batting strokes. We can't expect anything from his captaincy, coz he just started his new job, experience make him a good captain. We have no choice, he is the only player who can lead the SL team after Sanga and Mahela. One day thrimanna will take Sanga's role. I wish best of luck to Angelo and have a good future for SL cricket.
