Raina to lead India in Zimbabwe

Cricinfo staff
424

Suresh Raina will lead a second-string India squad for the ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe and the Twenty20s which follow, with Virat Kohli as his deputy. Among the first-choice players who are either rested or injured are regular captain MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh and Praveen Kumar.

The selection committee's decision to leave out experienced players provides an opportunity for youngsters to get a taste of international cricket. Those getting a look-in include seamers Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda, and Madhya Pradesh wicketkeeper Naman Ojha.

Dinda did reasonably well in the IPL, picking nine wickets in seven games, at an economy rate of 6.56, and Pankaj grabbed the limited opportunities he got with Royal Challengers Bangalore. This is the first call-up for Naman Ojha, whose 377 runs in the IPL was one of the silver linings of Rajasthan Royals' disappointing campaign.

Three Indian spinners who had outstanding IPL campaigns - legspinner Amit Mishra, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and offspinner R Ashwin - have also been picked. Legspinner Piyush Chawla, who was chosen ahead of all three for the World Twenty20, is not part of the one-day side but will join the squad for the Twenty20s.

The tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, kicks off in Bulawayo on May 28, with the Twenty20s on June 12th and 13th.

Squad: M Vijay, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Suresh Raina (capt), Virat Kohli (vice-capt), Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Pankaj Singh, Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ojha, Naman Ojha

Note: Piyush Chawla will join the squad for the Twenty20s.

I have no idea what is srikanth up to. He could not manage his career well and screwing up other cricketers careers. Those who have been watching cricket for a while know that Uthappa is a far better than one time wonder M Vijay. This is pure politics. SRIKANTH. Please visualise how nice it would be win the world cup in 2011. If you really want, please give chance to uthappa, rayudu and other talented cricketers.

I am really unhappy Srikanth's selection policy.. Robi Uthappa should have been give a chance ahead of Murali Vijay & Dinesh Karthic given his recent IPL Form & internation experience. He has good pull shots and can hook the ball. He is a better player than M. Vijay. Players like Vijay are good only in sub continent/ slow pictces where ball is not bouncing enuf. He should have got chance atleast against Zimbabwe/England A. I feel that grat injustice has happened against Robin Uthappa.

Don't understand how M Vijay has retained his spot in the Indian Cricket Team? We have seen his game for a long time now. He is now where near to be an international cricketer. One thing is sure, untill Srikkanth is chariman of national selection committee, inspite of many failures, Vijay will be compulsorily included in the Indian Team!!! Srikkanth is partisan on selecting Tamil Nadu players only, who are not talented enough to make a cut into the Indian Team. Next Tamil Nadu player who will make into the Indian Team is Aniruddha Srikkanth!!! I bet this will happen soon...

In my belief, India should have selected a bunch of players who are potential future stars and need exposure beyond the subcontinent. Would have loved to see Sehwag in charge of Raina though.

I guess the combination should have been Openers: Sehwag (Capt.) and Manish Pandey Middle Order: Suresh Raina (Vice Captain), Rohit Sharma, Saurabh Tiwary, Manoj Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu AllRounders: Yusuf Pathan, Abhishek Nayar Wicketkeeper: Naman Ojha Seamers: Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun and Siddharth Trivedi Spinners: Pragyan Ojha and Ravichandran Ashwin

    Aaron K

Don' tell me Vijay and Karthik didn't deserve it. That they did make use of their opportunities is a different thing. Karthik palyed well in SA odi's. I am not sure you can blame him for the two losses because our bowling was pathetic through out.

I am from TN and can read and write 'our' NATIONAL anthem. Don't generalize things about south indians or ppl from Tamil Nadu in general. When was chief selector there were 7 people from karnataka played for India out of them only 4 of them were really qualified to play for India. Please don't tell me that there was no bias then... or ever. Players like Vikram rathore and dewang gandhi got to play for India whereas a player like Sharath with an average of 58 in over 200 matches was never even given one chance. Do I need to point out more instances ?

Hi All!!!!! I don't understand how the selectors of Team India r selecting players. Is there any regional quota or lucky draw system of Mr.Srikanth. I think Mr.Srikanth is only person for Indias disaster form nowdays. Why Batsmen like Robin uttapa,Saurabh tiwary,Ambati Rayudu & Bowlers like RP Singh,Amit Mishra,All rounder Irfan Pathan r ignored from selection...does have any point for selecting guys like M Vijay,R Jadeja,Ashish Nehra..Can Mr.Srikanth explain this to whole Indian Cricket Fan? God knows abt future of Indian Cricket......

  • vidhyadhar on May 13, 2010, 8:31 GMT

UTHAPPA DOESN'T DESERVE ANY PLACE , EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT UTHAPPA JUST BECAUSE HE HAS PERFORMED WELL IN IPL MATCHES, WHAT ABOUT THE FLOW SHOW OF M.VIJAY, YUSUF PATHAN ETC. WHO HAD PERFORMED EXCELLENTLY IN IPL,ALL FAILED TO DELIVER INTERNATIONALLY, I DONT THINK EVEN RAYUDU NOR S.TIWARY DESERVE ANY PLACE, QUALITY OF BOWLING IN IPL AND INTERNATIONAL CRICKET IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. BOWLER MIGHT PLAY OUT OVERS OF DIRK NANNES, TAIT ETC. IF THEY ARE IN DIFFERENT TEAMS, BUT WHAT IF ALL COME IN SAME TEAM AND BOWL TOGETHER. THEN ONE CANNOT PLAY OUT 4-5 BOWLERS AND SCORE NOTHING.

PLEASE DONT GO WITH IPL PERFORMANCES , IF THATS THE CASE INDIA WILL HAVE 100 CRORE SELECTORS AND SELECTION WILL BE LOT EASY THAN IT LOOKS.

GIVE A CHANCE TO JOGINDER SHARMA, WHO CAN BOWL HANDY AND CAN EVEN BAT AND HAS FIRST-CLASS HUNDREDS TOO. PLAY R.ASHWIN AND HARBHAJAN TOGETHER AND SEE THE DIFFERENCE. R.ASHWIN HAS PERFORMED WELL IN DOMESTIC LEVELS AND CAN HANDLE PRESSURE TOO.

  • coolio78 on May 13, 2010, 8:09 GMT

Looking at the team selection(s) since the past 12 months, I guess to be a part of the Indian team, a player has to somehow play for TN or CSK atleast once in his cricketing life time. I will not be surprised if Anirudha Srikanth will join the Indian team soon... (my daddy stongest)

  • vin77 on May 13, 2010, 7:14 GMT

Its a shame the selectors dont learn at all. There is something bigger behind the scene.Raina becomes captain when he has not captained even UP.He did so with Chennai Super Kings when Dhoni was out.Now does Dhoni only trust Raina?,why this hatred towards the best players for the game in present form Uthappa,Tiwari,Rayudu,Pandey. In case of Yuvraj is it temporary rest or something more permanent ? he deserves to be dropped untill he can fight his way back,(if he can on purely form ,which is a big if).The question is why are Indian fans being taken for a ride? who will answer for all fans of Indian Cricket.

  • Ravibaladi on May 13, 2010, 5:01 GMT

Are the team managemnet looking at Murali vijay and Dinesh karthik as opening pair in case of non availability of sehwag and gambhir ????..may be they are sound in technique but for one day and 20-20 games we need players who can consistantly hit the ball over the top and clear the 30 yard circle...i dont think these 2 players can do that consistantly against quality international team bowlers...please start looking for some hard hitting batsmen at the top instead of always going in with dinesh karthik as opening replacement...

  • Ravibaladi on May 13, 2010, 4:42 GMT

As the world cup 2011 is nearing by, India should be looking at having a fixed set of players instead of still playing around with options...i think the team selection commity should be looking at good fixed set of openers. As of now there is no good options for opeining slot if any of sehwag or gambhir gets injured..so there should always be an option of an attacking opening batsman who can replace sehwag or gambhir...for me its looks very ridiculous that most of the time india go with dinesh karthik as opener. There are lots of better players than him who are attacking opening batsmen who can utilize the power plays.Middle order looks good with likes of raina, kohli, dhoni still 7 th position needs players like Tiwary or uthappa..and also india badly needs an allrounder like irfan pathan who can bat and bowl his medium pacers .In bowling department we have good bunch of spinners Pace bowling really needs some good pacers who can bowl at 140 plus.

  • Siva_Prasad on May 13, 2010, 3:21 GMT

  • arvindram on May 13, 2010, 0:24 GMT

@Aaron.k, I am not sure why you are talking about the inability of TN folks to read/write the national language as comment to this article. Is it wrong to promote a historic language that has been around for over 2000 years? The Indian subcontinent has already lost the relevence of one historic language (Sanskrit). Do you really want the country to lose another? Instead of being critical of Tamil, we should stand united to support such a historic language.

  • arvindram on May 12, 2010, 23:44 GMT

@Kumar_INDIAN, Pujara, Rahane, Pandey, and Tiwary are selected for the India A team touring England at the same time!! This would serve as a good exposure for these players.

I agree with you that Amol Mazumdhar, Sitanshu Kotak, Mithun Minhas, and Amarjeet Kaypee deserved to have played for India. These players are the unfortuantely one or two who missed out from their respective states to play for India in the last 2 decades.

Uthappa scored runs ONLY in IPL-3 that too after he was dropped by shoddy fielding. If the fielders had caught easy catches he wouldnt have scored much. I have followed his batting in the previous KPL (Karnataka's version of IPL) and first division league in Bangalore. He was not impressive even there either. He was at a risk of being dropped from the Karnataka Ranji team too! I hope these are reasons enough to explain my position on Uthappa.

Hello All !!! Its a very disappointing performance in ICC world T20 tournament. But i can say its all about lack of good team selection, lack of commitment, lack of confidence and full of pure politics.I dont understand y Mr. Shrikanth is playing with the Indian players and more importantly with huge fans of Indian cricket by not selecting the players who are in the great form. He is the one who is responsible for the defeats in the ICC T20.Rather selecting the in form palyers like Naman Ojha, Robin Uthappa, Saurabh Tiwary, Ambati Rayudu etc; he selected the players who are not in such a good form. Its very pity that India is definitely lacking techniques in the selection of a good team in the form of Mr. Shrikanth. Also it concludes that Mr. Shrikanth is creating a gamble in the middle order by not selecting the in form palyers so as to cement his son in the indian team. There is no use of blaming the Indian captain Mr. Dhoni and the team players for not doing well in the ICC T20.

  • Hotchner on May 12, 2010, 8:14 GMT

Dont understand guys why these TN guys are too sensitive here...It is always been a sensation when TN players get picked or dropped.I think whoever making noise for TN should rememebr other state players deserve same since they are going to play for India.Any how guys out there do'nt be surprised TN is always been thinking that they are the best eventhough they cant read and write national language and sing national anthem.....Just leave them alone...whoever get selected let them paly and produce result for India...not for TN ...

@arvindram hello bro,v r not here 2 argue here ,instead v must look on 2 build the team INDIA. Players like Amol mazumdhar ,J.Arun kumar ,Sitanshu Kotak and others didn get a single chance even though they played consistently thru their cricket career. For the last two seasons ajinkya rahane, tiwary, pandey, nayar and many others have been in a fine form,Still they haven't got a chance. I agree that last season Uthappa didnt have a good domestic season. But he improved his performance during IPL-3. And i m astonished about u r words against Uthappa. He is an ideal and perfect player for 20-20 format and ODI format. And none of us are happy with SRIKANTH's selection of team INDIA.

  • arvindram on May 11, 2010, 20:01 GMT

@Kumar_INDIAN, I am not blaming the batsman for sloppy fielding. All I am saying is that Uthappa doesnt deserve a spot on the team as he wouldnt have got the high scores without the help of shoddy fielding. If you look at the previous comments below there seems to be a slant against TN players and Srikanth. Hence my post was focused on TN players. BTW can you name a few players who have consistently performed in the last 2 decades and havent gotten to play for India?

  • RANAROYALS on May 11, 2010, 16:10 GMT

  • INIDAN_Nandi on May 11, 2010, 14:18 GMT

I completely agree with KK7980.....Your words are true and correct... Selectors are not picking up talented and performing players.....I think BCCI should bring in a rotational scheme by which players can get enough chances and so tat even seniors and juniors will be well balanced..........

  • arvindram on May 11, 2010, 11:47 GMT

The players selected here have all been with the Indian team in some capacity or the other. Some of the players mentioned in this thread: Pandey, Pujara and Tiwary have not been in the fringes yet. They have been selected for the India A squad.

Robin Uthappa doesnt deserve a spot. His last 2 domestic seasons have been atrocious. Even in the IPL he flourished in a few games because of the reprieves given by shoddy fielding. Let him play a consistent season of domestic cricket before he is given a chance. There seems to be a lot of media hype around him.

Nayar and Irfan could have been given a chance.

  • arvindram on May 11, 2010, 11:11 GMT

@KK7980, please get your facts straight before posting. Sadagopan Ramesh did recover from injury (not a stress fracture) and was playing consistent cricket and yet ignored. S. Sriram has never been inconsistent. Unfortunately for him he was vying for the same spot as Dravid. The fact that some players choose to play in ICL is not a bad thing. You can't hold it up against them. They weren't getting any opportunities within the BCCI framework. More over, Tamil Nadu has been one of the top 4 teams in the country in terms of consistent performances in the last 2 decades. Mumbai, Karnataka, and Delhi have been the other 3 teams. Even Karnataka and Delhi have had off seasons where they have not qualified for the Ranji knock-out phase. The other TN names you are missing are S. Sharath, Venkataramana, and Sunil Subramaniam who have played consistent cricket without much recognition (yes, Venkataramana did get one ODI chance!).

  • OnlyAmit on May 11, 2010, 10:16 GMT

I don't know what the logic is to appoint Raina the captain. I would have gone for Dinesh Karthik. He has been the TN captain, he captained Delhi Daredevils and is a confirmed fixture in the side when Dhoni is not around as he is the only reserve WK at this time. Raina got this opp only because he played with Dhoni for Chennai. I have nothing against Raina and I am not from TN to favor a TN player, but I am sure Dinesh will feel upset at not being appointed captain.

  • ardent_cricketlover on May 11, 2010, 7:12 GMT

hi everyone. It is really disheartening to see people saying srikant is promoting CSk and Tamil players. For almost 2 decades Tamil Nadu (Tn) players did'nt even get substantial oppurtunities to prove themselves. India has lost a reasonably good test batsman in sadagopan ramesh, the only guy who played akram and waqar younis comfortably. During the same period many hopeless players got more than enough oppurtunities and they failed.I dont want to name them in a public discussion. Sharath miserably ended his career after playing for tamil nadu and never got a look in. Dinesh Kartik is one of india 's most technically accomplished batsman. Ashwin is best in choking the flow of runs. If he is able pressurize sachin as we saw in final, what best can we expect from a young lad like him.

  • on May 11, 2010, 6:42 GMT

  • KK7980 on May 11, 2010, 6:12 GMT

I think noone is against picking up talented and performing players... and its not about TN or Kerala or any other state.. However, Pilotprem, you should also get your facts right. Sadagopna and Balaji were dropped due to stress fracture they suffered and they never really got back into the form again... badani and S Sreeram were due to inconsistent performanace and also they chose to joing ICL... Thurukumaran was no good.. Murali is a class act but his selection in T20 squad was purely on just one mind blowing century... and if you see the list of players who represented India in last 10 years from TN is quite significant.. so dont pretend that TN was discriminated.. If you want to look at just stats of last two years performance then Jadeja has done exceedingly well... and Pujara should be aggrieved... The kind of selection happening these days give indication of Srikanth biasness... Still cant blame him.. everyone does that..

  • INIDAN_Nandi on May 11, 2010, 5:45 GMT

some1 is saying tat selection is made on last year's domestic performance ,if that was the case ...where is Manish Pandey?? Abhimanyu Mithun ?? Abhishek Nayar?? Pujara?? they were the top scorers in domestic season....I think srikanth should quit his job .He is not selecting a fair team instead he is doing very much politics .He is interested in making CSK team as a INDIAN Team.

  • INIDAN_Nandi on May 11, 2010, 5:32 GMT

Srikanth and others are selecting only TN players and they r doing politics. Vijay has good record in test format but not in 20-20 format of the game .And even the same jadeja was responsible for INDIA's elimination in the last world cup 20-20.This time also he hasn't proved anything.Yusuf is a waste man in the team ,atleast Uthappa,Tiwary and Rayudu should be given chances ahead of them...

  • Pilotprem on May 11, 2010, 4:59 GMT

Hi All , Stop making hard statements before knowing the clear facts , ROBIN IS INJURED & more over the selection is based on LAST YEAR DOMESTIC Performance & not on IPL Alone , STOP ANTI SRIKKANTH Slogan , He doesnt single handedly picks the team , there are selectors from 5 zones who will put forward their players name & finally on so called TN Biased selection , just chk the records of DKarthick, VIJAY,Ashwin in all formats of domestic tournament IN CRICINFO itself for last 2 years & compare the same with ROBIN / IRFAN & even the players selected , then give your comments , OTHER THAN RJadeja , every thing is a Fair selection , Even ROHIN was brassed before the knock against AUS, If this is termed biased means what about the last 6 years treatment to BADRI , no players other than DK had been gvn run , S RAMESH , BADANI, SHARATH are examples , STOP Crying when a TN player is selected based on MERIT , They too play pretty cricket

  • manasvi_lingam on May 11, 2010, 4:37 GMT

Horrible selection. We need 5 batsmen, 1 wicketkeeper and 1 all-rounder. Where are the 5 batsmen? Vijay, Raina, Kohli and Rohit Sharma - 4 in all. Neither Karthik or Naman Ojha deserve to be counted as full batsmen. I think one more player, some really promising such as Pujara should have been included or someone who was in good form in the IPL such as Uthappa. This batting selection is a farce. The pace bowling sucks too: Umesh Yadav has pace but nothing more and Pankaj Singh has neither. Dinda is also a pretty ordinary bowler. The spinners are both good: Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha.

The idea (to give youngsters a chance) is good but the execution (actual selection) is pathetic. No balance whatsoever. Some baffling selections/omissions.

  • on May 11, 2010, 1:38 GMT

Lately Zim is playing improved one day cricket. Do not forget that they beat both Ausies and Pakis in the warm ups prior to the T-2o world cup. With the announced team I fear that India at some point could regret the decision in not going with the strongest team; and Suresh Raina as captain? Seeing him playing, I thought sometimes he looks great but there were times, he ran out of ideas in his own play. Is he a leader on and off the field? I doubt. Remember his childish celebration during IPL match, that I thought irritated his team mates including Mat Heyden. I hope selectors are much more knowledgable and Raina will prove me wrong. Bottom line is do not underestimate or overestimate anybody in cricket be it Zim as a team or Raina as a captain.

WHat a waste...First of all for the World Cup we selected the wrong team..we could have experimented for the World Cup..Yusuf, Gambhir, Yuvraj, R Sharma...all were not very profilic scorers in IPL..and the men in form..like Robin, Rayadu...we never picked them up...

And for Zimbabwe...how could you not consider..ROBIN...

He played like a champ. He was the Under-19 Captian in the 2004 world cup for Raina, Pathan and many others. He is a genuine talent and shouldnt be ignored

India loses t20. lets look at the selelction . Yosuf Pathan-loser.Zaheer kahn-loser,r Jadeja - loser.piyush chawla ---loser.yuvraj singh --big loser, karthi -loser,viay -loser. You cannot pick players who do well in the IPL and ask them to represent India. You need a player like Dravid who can stabilise the middle and give the hitters a chance .The slelctors have screwed up just lk ethey did the last time.Last time they picked RPsingh and he was a m iserable failure.l

  • Crickathon on May 10, 2010, 16:51 GMT

Somebody help me understand this - in yesterday's match and the one before that against Aus, we had Bhajji as the main spinner and Yuvi, Yusuf, Rohit and Raina as part time spinners. Why was Jadeja picked over and above all this even when there are already five people in the playing eleven who can spin the ball? If it was for his batting, he has not done anything great with the bat either! And now, he still continues to find a place in the squad for Zimbabwe! Remember - this guy was banned from the IPL because there was a proven absence of his integrity. It is too hard to believe that a person without integrity, without performance continues to enjoy a coveted place in the Indian team which hundreds of sincere hard-working prospects yearn so much for. Clearly, this guy has some very high level influence at the right places.

This is in response to all those so-called 'fans' n 'critics' who are criticizing the selection of Ravindra Jadeja for the ODI series in Zimbabwe. He was the Man of the Match in the 1st ODI vs South Africa for bowling figures of 10-2-29-2 and bowled quite decently in the series played on a some serious featherbeds. Hope these guys understand the difference between ODI n 20/20 Cricket. Just because he had two bad games in World T20, he should be dropped from the ODIs ???? Thankfully we dont have such fickle-minded selectors !!!!!! Just look at Pakistan .. And lets consign Irfan Pathan to history .. his days as a bowler are OVER. And yea, all those who accuse Kris of favouring his home state, they need to be informed that Badrinath has'nt made it to this team. And the gentleman who says that Jadeja and Yousuf belongs to Kris' home state , i.e. Tamil Nadu needs to get his facts and geography right.

ALL THE BEST TO RAINA & CO. !!!!!!

  • arunmsc80 on May 10, 2010, 16:32 GMT

sikka we need bowling allrounders especially pacers so we have to think about Irfan pathan, ganapthy of tamilnadu and for bowlers RPsingh is forgotten. batsmans badrinath should be in the middle order and rayudu should be moulded to be in all forms of the game think about it.... i dont think jadeja to be considered again if so harmeet singh to be groomed to be a good death bowler

  • Crickathon on May 10, 2010, 16:17 GMT

With the current standard of cricket in Zimbabwe, this could have been a move to make the series more competitive but only if it is done with the buy in of the Srilankan selectors. If Srilanka sends a full strength Grade 1 side, then there is no point watching this series. Will be interesting to see what team the Lankans pick.

  • mthanveer on May 10, 2010, 15:19 GMT

    Wait guys....

Saurabh Tiwary and Ambati Rayudu will be selected in the international team once they cross 35 years!!!!

  • SavvyCanadian on May 10, 2010, 15:02 GMT

Jadeja and Yusuf do not have the quality to play in international teams...they can be lions only on desi wickets & local tournaments. And any Indian team can not be complete without the selection of IRFAN PATHAN, ROBIN UTHAPPA, AMBATI RAYUDU & SAURABH TIWARI. It was a good decision to select UMESH YADAV....I hope he gets a chance to play in the next match - he is currently the FASTEST BOWLER from India...CONSISTENTLT Bowls at 145 KM/HR. He needs to be encouraged & given chances to get expereince! K Srikkanth & his selection committee should resign, as they have brought shame to the nation by selecting players like Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf and Yuvraj. YUVRAJ might be a person who is destructive on a day, but terribly out of form, physically unfit & tired. A selection should always happen on CURRENT FORM and NOT on PAST LAURELS. For bowling, I don't understand how Srikkanth & company could miss PRAGYAN OJHA (Orange Cap),MISHRA & economical MURLI KARTHIK?

  • dravidsthebest on May 10, 2010, 15:00 GMT

for the first time India A is looking better than indian team

  • on May 10, 2010, 14:51 GMT

The Chairman of selectors is one Srikkanth, who can't speak Hindi to save his life, but gets an A for makiing an attempt, although he ends up looking like an ass. His team selection probably follows the same pattern. He has tried his best, but it is not just good enough.A balanced team despite the missing stalwarts might have been -Murali Vijay. Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yusuf Pathan, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Pragyan Ojha, Pankaj Singh and Umesh Yadav. The rest of the squad should have been Saurabh Tiwary, Amit Mishra, Ramachandra Ashwin and Rudra Pratap Singh

  • on May 10, 2010, 14:49 GMT

Srikanth should be sacked as a Selector now. The goof ups he is coming up with the selection are really BAFFLING. 1. Every one of us remembers the team that was chosen for 1st test against Proteas 3 months back and the result was that even W. Saha played the test even though the team later on accepted that they never meant him to be in playing XI. So why was he even selected when better players were not selected? Or is it that Saha is a better keeper / batsman as compared to Karthik? 2. India was leading 2-0 in ODI series against Proteas and for 3rd ODI, Indian team looked like a 3rd string team. when the team was already not fielding 3 main players due to injury, they dropped another 4 to give a chance to youngsters, in a match they were due to lose and eventually they did by conceeding over 350 runs. Was the team selected just to not India achieve 3-0 score line? 2. Now then India is playing Sri Lankans also in Zimbabwe, then how come can we win there with such a team. Baffling.

Srikant has always been a foolish cricketer and is now a foolish selector. Even after the top players have been rested, Uthappa and Rayudu do not find a place in the T20 team. This is ridiculous. If players in form are not picked at the right time, it does not help either the team nor the players themselves. We keep playing domestic class players such as Yusuf Pathan and Jadeja...inspite of they clearly showing they dont belong to the international level. Yusuf Pathan may finally score runs against Zimbabwe since they have very ordinary and slow medium bowlers...the moment a fast bowler bowls a short one, Pathan looks clueless.....

  • on May 10, 2010, 12:01 GMT

First of all remember that IPL is all tamasha cricket and performance in IPL should not be counted for Indian Selection. Rayudu, Tiwari, Uthapppa and others let them prove themselves in Ranji, Duleep, Deodhar and Irani Trophy first. Let them show their prowess first and then claim a place in Indian squad.

  • bluebillion on May 10, 2010, 11:37 GMT

Players should be rested from non-India competitions like the IPL and not for international tours. The CSKs and DDRs etc are more important for Indian players than playing for India.

  • bluebillion on May 10, 2010, 11:31 GMT

So Uthappa and Abhishek Nayar are not even in the top 40 of indian cricket (incl the rested guys and the 16 selected for the India A tour)? Neither are Ishant Sharma and Irfan Pathan? And we still go to world cups and come back with our tails between our legs? Come on ... did they have a fight with Anirudha Srikkanth or what? Is it possible to file a RTI to know why this is so? And what about Sehwag - is he rested or dropped or still injured? This is a joke.

ANd with the tri series squad - 4 batsmen, 1 WK, 1 allrounder and 9 bowlers??? Seriously - the selection committee's time is up.

yusuf pathan if he gates going no won can stop him he just stand in the crease to put preresure on opposition thas how he is

  • on May 10, 2010, 10:01 GMT

Jadeja , Yousuf are bits and pieces cricketers , they are not match winners (Yousuf can only win you matches in India on flat tracks :) ). We want players who are good at their respective skills either batting or bowling ..... india doesnt have an allrounder , so we should not try to make one out of somebody and then suffer like this. Yousuf doesnt have a proper batting technique. Jadeja is not a wicket taking bowler , he relies on being economical and then putting pressure. Look @ Murali Vijay , he has been given an oppurtunity very very early courtesy Srrikanth. Poor Manish Pandey, proved in South Africa last IPL that he is a good batsman , still he never got a chance ; still you give Vijay a chance who cannot hook , just because he is from your state Mr Srikkanth So the net result of this selection policy is India out of T-20.

Dear Indian Cricket Fans, BCCI is trying to kill the test/international cricket by concentrating on domestic IPL to get huge profits. They have rested senior players for an International tournament. Why can't they rest them for IPL matches and allow them to play International cricket??. Where are these so called Indian Cricket legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shasthri who always lecture about player injuries. Theye are also on the IPL Board. What they are doing there? Why can't they protest about player injuries in the board meetings and reduce the number IPL matches. SHAME ON YOU BCCI and INDIAN CRICKET "LEGENDS" !!!!! IPL is spanning more than 45 days with just 8 teams. I didn't see a tournament any where in the world in any sport that spans so many days with just 8 teams. The coming Soccer world cup with 32 teams is going to complete the league stage in 14 days (11th June - 25th June).

Three players selected from CSK, its not far that you will have 5 to 6 players from CSK helping their franchisee in return. The resut of such foolish decisions is India's exit from the T20 World Cup this year. Hope now atleast some serious people take over the responsibility outthrowing such people for the better cause of Cricket in India

Comments are getting rather obtrusive and biased.Interestingly one comment was about how BCCI wants ZEE Coverage drop down.Is it the call of BCCI or selectors to pick second rung team. The selectiors have done quite well except for few glaring mistakes like not choosing R Uthappa over Ravinder Jadega and not naming Rohit Sharma as VC instead of Kohli. Rohit has mature head over Kohli. I think Naman Ojha has finally got the much deserved place and i am disappointed with the selection of Dinesh Karthik as first keeper. On the bowling front,Sidharth Trivedi should have been tried in place of Dinda. Players like Yuvraj singh have taken their place for granted and are performing below par and not winning matches for India. Here is an opportunity in slightly longer version than T 20 to test the skills and temperament of the young hopefuls. Lets see how they fare in less testing attack and conditions.

  • on May 10, 2010, 7:39 GMT

  • on May 10, 2010, 7:39 GMT

Hats off too Indian selectors for trying to increase the bench strength. But these younger players ned some support and help from senior players like sachin, dravid, shewag and so on...So i believe we are short of frontline players like Shewag, Sachin in batting and Bhajji, Zak in bowling. If they lose this series, they will get demoralised and it will not help in increasing the bench stength.

In addition,we should have given a chance for S Tiwary, A Rayudu, R Uthappa, M Pandey as they performed better than the selected players in IPL. With this team, i dont think, we can beat SriLanka may be Zimbabwe too. Hope you all remember, Zimbabwe won the warm up matches against Aussies and Paks 2 weeks back.

Can't understand what wrong has been done by Irfan? Rohit is picked on reputation and few performances, then Irfan has both. And esp. when you are trying all rookies in bowling department, Irfan would be handy pick. Something more than cricket here..

And names like Manish pandey, Saurabh Tiwary, Ambati Rayudu, Robin Uthappa are ignored once again. Not all, but at least one out of this 4 could have been selected ahead of out of form Dinesh.

The idea behind this team selection of grooming the bench strength before WC2011 is good. But it would have been better if this was started an year ago.Coming to the selection, starting from openers-vijay,Nojha,karthik is ok but where is the variation of having a left hander??In the bowling department as well the is no left arm seamer who can bring in some variety.selection of dinda and umesh is a good move, but not vinay.mithun would have been a better choice but sangwan even better, considering his variety as a left armer and his ability to move the ball both ways.Uthappa should have been in the team as he has fair amount of experience for this level and can take up the responsibility of keeping and bat at any position.Sdhawan would have been a good choice as an opener.selection of kamran khan for the 2 T20s would have been ideal for he is an exciting talent and has pace and age on his side.jadeja is fine but his place in future should strictly depend on his performance in this tour.

Can somebody tell me how Umesh Yadav is being send to play in the T20 world cup when he was not in the 30 probables for the T20 world cup,if this was the case then why was Robin Utthappa not send in place of Virender Sehwag when he got injured and Murali Vijay was preffered in place of Robin Utthappa. Everyone was saying at that time that b'coz Robin Utthappa was not in the 30 probables so he was not send to Play the world cup.I feel very bad for Robin that being such a wonderful batsman he is not selected in the Indian team. I am sure he is far far better than Rohit Sharma,Virat kohli,Ravindra Jadeja,Dinesh Karthik. And same is the case with Irfan Pathan. What i think is Both these players have what we call in Hindi is 36 ka aakra... :)

  • Sameer_Ponnada on May 10, 2010, 6:24 GMT

yusuf pathan and ravindra jadeja still in squad??????????????? the only reason jadeja deserved a place in the team for the world cup was his bowling. After a disastrous tournament like that, I dont see why he is still in the squad. And coming to yusuf pathan, the whole world knows how ineffective he is against short pitched deliveries (worse than the rest of team).. srikanth lost his mind!!

  • Geogyu on May 10, 2010, 6:03 GMT

  • RanjanMathur on May 10, 2010, 5:54 GMT

Raina, wonder what he is being rewarded for Chennai superking performance or performance for India? Only Srikanth knows who again has conveniently ignored Uthapa, Irfan Pathan and Srisanth. The team is pathetic and will be walloped. No pujara, how discouraging for someone who did well in Ranji, must be wondering what he needs to do to even get into the squad. I feel that Srikanth should not be allowed to be a selector and be associated with chennai superking, its clearly a conflict of interest, which is proving costly for the Indian National team as selection is biased.

  • love4crik on May 10, 2010, 5:44 GMT

I dont see the Indian team going anywhere! As far as internal politics keeps loitering around you can never have a winning composition! Robin did deserve a chance & youngsters like Rayudu, Pandey etc were to be given a look into the squad! Raina is just starting his career let him focus on his batting first, its bad pressurizing him! Just like Kenya, Zimbabwe & other teams who lost their glory India will lose it too the same way if this kind of selection is going to happen for too long!! NO INSIGHT AT ALL!! WORST TEAM COMPOSITION!!

  • muski on May 10, 2010, 5:36 GMT

Confusion compounded by the confused Chennai man & Co. They pick some guys are passengers on some tours only to dump them in the next. Why take Vinay Kumar for the world cup and dont give him a chance and then not pick him for Zimabwe tour. Does Srikant hold a grudge against Robin. This could have been the best opportunity to get him back to International cricket. A guy like Jadeja inspite of innumerbale chaces given to him has not delivered. Why give him the long rope especially against a weak opposition. He may again perform there to fail again against stronger teams like he proved in this world cup. When cricket lovers like us can think on such lines, wonder if any kind of thinking goes into the head of the selection committee. Finally, I thought Anniruddha should have got a call- with his dad at the helm. That's how ridiculous the thought process has been

IPL, our cricketers don't take rest, YES our players take to rest when they are to play for the country. Ok, ok Srikant, Zimbabwe or any other team, did i hear all these cricketers say, playing for their country is their ambition? Give me a break Srikant, playing for your country should be the prime motivator, but here you are very clear, play where the money is. Srikant, you being a brand ambassador for CSK and a chief national selector have disgraced yourself and the nation with this cheap resting antic of senior players, when actually the senior players should come forward and play for the nation. Hats off to Stuart Broad, who declined IPL to be fit for his national commitments.

Selectors are firing from the shoulder of poor Raina !! They are giving the worst team to him and expecting him to perform. Probable XI would be : 1) Vijay 2) Ojha 3) Raina 4) Rohit 5) Virat 6) Yusuf 7) Ashwin 8) Amit Mishra 9) Dinda 10) Umesh 11) Pragyan 12) Vinay ...... But guyz if they will be clicked then should seniors be again "rested" ?? Best of luck to Zimbabwe and yes to SL - to creat some of the records against the third string of IND ... I feel sorry for Irfan and Uthappa. You require luck and influence along with your talent and that is now proved in the case of both of these talented players !! India is spoiling a jenuine all rounder in form of Irfan and also spoiling a match winner in form of Uthappa !!

  • Shiva_K on May 10, 2010, 5:13 GMT

Selectors approach was good but their execution wasn't (like our T20 team).

Uthappa - Definitely missing. His confidence and striking was awesome in this IPL. Irfan - You can't take him as a full time bowler. He played 14 matches in this IPL and has taken 15 wickets @ 9.19 which is the most expensive by any bowler, who has taken more than 7 wickets. You may take him as an all-rounder(exclusive definition for India).

India is definitely lacking an all-rounder and has to find a right one before next WC.

Tiwary/Rayudu - Its debatable and when you have that much batting unit left in the bench, its hard for them to get in.

One batsman is missing in that unit and uthappa for jadeja/pankaj/ashwin would have been a good bet.

Interestingly Pujara has been named as captain for India - A. Tiwary, Rayudu, Manish, Saha, Mithun are worth mentioning here. Playing in english conditions is always going to be tough compared to Zimbabwe.

Anyways my best wishes to team. Justify ur selection guys!!!

  • on May 10, 2010, 5:02 GMT

First of all, Dhoni should be sacked from captaincy as well as K.Srikant. Srikant is just a stupid person to hold the post of chairmain of selection committee. Due to this mad fellow we get defeated in one of the test match against S.Africa due to his wrong selection process and this time too we suffered with his selection in the world cup t20. With immediate effect Gautam Gambhir should be the captain of India and that bloddy IPL should be stopped with immediate effect too. Once M. Amarnath accused that India selectors are a bunch of jokers and it reminds me the same here now too.

It is interesting to see team filled young players but BCCI are undoing what senior+junior(which is called a team) players have done in last 3 years. I mean there should be two senior players (those who have not played in T20 WC).If this team managed finals then you make them play finals (which is one month later from today). I think this much rest is enough for Senior Players.

Whats going on in Indian cricket? While i kind of disagree with others who are in support of other chaps not in the squad, i agree with all who are in support of Robin Uthappa. Who more should a player do to perform? Kallis and Peterson expressed that they are glad to see Uthappa not in the T20 squad, now he has been sacked from the other 2 competitions. I come from the state of Srikanth. If Srikanth is responsible for this, he should be sacked. I'm sure the media should question him on this and ask for reasons.

  • ksmuthukrishnan on May 10, 2010, 3:09 GMT

Yet another disappointment with the selection. I can't understand why they are not choosing 1. Irfan, The only international fast bowling all-rounder who can bat at any situation & against any opposition ( he can act as a trump card between 4-16 overs, both in batting and bowling ). 2. Uttappa, A big big hitter who can take the game away from the opposition at any situation. Certainly India is missing a big hitting opener in the absence of shewag which can be solved by using him back as an opener. The other players should have been chosen are 1. Tiwary, Can act as a pillar in the 'higher middle order' who can slog at will just as like Dhoni. 2. Rayudu, Good 'late middle order' big hitting batsman. 3. Nayar, Good all-rounder who can play big shots and handy with the ball. I don't understand why they are choosing Vijay, Jadeja and Chawla for T20s ( the result is obvious from the WC ). These guys have already missed the T20 WC. Now this tour also. Very worst selection.

  • harryrockz on May 10, 2010, 2:59 GMT

This selection has left everyone amazed at what future India will look like. If the quality of batsmen is somewhat acceptable, relying too much on spin will ruin India. The quality of pace bowling is not exposed and the selectors have to run from pillar to post from now on to get a good pace bowling attack. The likes of Umesh Yadav, Ashok Dinda will not impress that much as the likes of Venky and Srinath did for us. Lets hope we get a good quality Indian team for the future... Selectors - pls concentrate on pace bowlers. They are the need of the hour. Looka t the Windies. At one stage after Walsh and Ambrose retired, they were struggling till guys like Roach, Taylor and Bravo looked in. Now they have a great potential in the fast bowling department. Pls study the game and select the people and don't study the politics or money. Money is not everything. Its the pride to play for our country. Chika, i have been a your great supporter but this time sorry you have done a mistake :(

Agreed not a great selection, but Uthappa and Irfan..they've got their chances. They did little do their justice and I bet, they'll still struggle. Irfan will be most expensive bowler, only his batting could save him. And Uthappa, just one fair season in IPL doesn't not call for any merit. Rayudu could have been a good choice, a good puller and hooker. And captain Raina!!! Need some thinking on that..I'm really surprised to the support for Irfan and Uthappa. Guys just check their international averages for bowling and batting respectively. They are pretty ordinary players.

poor selction again..looks like ipl's match fixing isnt enough they are even into world cup now too.what about TIWARY,RAYUDU and why jadeja again a complete failure..sack selection team worse than ever..I back suresh Raina as captain..no doubt but deputy can be Rohith not Kohli come on !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Karun on May 9, 2010, 22:57 GMT

Idea is good (to give youngsters a chance) but the execution is pathetic (no balance whatsoever).

  • ArunChennai on May 9, 2010, 22:37 GMT

I am fine with this team selection. Indian team has been playing a lot of cricket continuously and they need a break to refresh themselves. And this will be a great opportunity for Raina, Kohli & Co. I am excited to see how this team will do in Zimbabwe. However two things baffle me a bit. Why Uthappa has not been given a chance? Hope he will be there at least in the T20 squad. But I think he is more than just a T20 player. And I don't any great thinking in bringing Piyush Chawla just for T20s. I don't understand if he is some magical T20 bowler. Amit Mishra can bat a bit and a better bowler than Chawla is. Apart from two minor issues, overall the team selection is good considering the fact that the senior players need some rest and get in touch with their families. We play too much cricket these days which I fear will tire both the players and fans alike. When players get tired it shows in their game and when they don't perform fans will lose interest and will work against cricket.

  • weluvit09 on May 9, 2010, 22:33 GMT

people who think R Jadeja is a waste seriously need to jump of a cliff. He has had a bad t20 tournament yes, but has played well more often than not for india considering only starting his career. Irfan Pathan has had numerous chances, but lets face it he is to slow and wayward to play international cricket. While we're on this topic, India wil never have a quality fast bowler unless they start to become more athletic and eat the right diet. They are either too thin, to fat i.e zaheer, yuvraj, r sharma, nehra, praveen kumar. If you look at quality bowlers such as flintoff, johnson, bond, edwards, steyn, malinga....they maintain there body efficently.

going back to the zim tour, pankaj sing, vinay kumar and dinda should not be in that squad. they are awful. also a MAJOR LOL at the guy who said kamran khan. but for india to go forward, they need to find some good fast bowlers.

wtf is dennis lille producing at his mrf pace academy?

This is the best possible line-up

Murali Vijay Naman Ojha Suresh Raina Virat Kohli Rohit Sharma Dinesh Karthik Yusuf Pathan Ravindra Jadeja Ravichandan Ashwin Amit Mishra Ashok Dinda Umesh Yadav

Leaving out Uthappa, Irfan Pathan is a disgrace!

1st of all Kris Shreekanth should be sacked and after that team strategy maker should be sacked...i dont know why dhoni has opt to bowl against mighty Australia after winning a toss and same mistake is repeated against West Indies...r we gud in chasing? I dnt knw what the point of keeping Jadeja in the team against West Indies when he doesnt bowl and bat well, only gud he was doing is fielding and in that also he has shown how gud he is..after some simple miss-fielding and drop catches. Congrats Mr. Shreekant u really made us proud by not giving chance to talented players from IPL. Same mistake is done again by choosing team for Zimbabwe tour by not giving chance to 1. Robin Uthappa, 2. Irfan Pathan, 3. Saurabh Tiwary or Ambati Rayadu. Why we need Jadeja and Yousuf Pathan when they are good for nothing, who doesnt take responsibilties and why again Piyush Chawla is included in T20 Squad(5 spinners) r u crazy or wat?

  • midnightsunknights on May 9, 2010, 21:38 GMT

HAHAHA! this is the biggest joke this year! what a ridiculous, disgraceful and pathetic team we have! heavens, if they wanted to rest everyone so badly (and that too because of that idiotic IPL) then why didnt they just cancel the stupid tournament? wouldnt it be better than losing every match there is against minnows like zimbabwe?

and LMFAO, they didnt choose irfan? and robin? and instead made virat VC and raina captain! this is unfantomably hillarious! seriously? virat wasnt even in the T20 squad, and now he is vc? and irfan who was one of the most successful batsman for KIXP, and in the top 10 of higest wicket takers isnt in the squad? and robin too? either there is a quota system, or something horrible in the backgrounds but this is ridiculous! ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! srikanth is a freakin bais person, indian cricket needs to get rid of him soon! or not even God can save indian cricket!

  • on May 9, 2010, 21:28 GMT

Well Man of The Match R.Jadeja. Its not enrirely his fault as Dhoni should have taken an extra bowler than R.Jadeja. And why give him second over again???? Was one not enough? Team needs Sachin back no doubt but more than that Dhoni is becoming like Ganguli now thinkinh he knows everything. Whats coach doing here? Why did he not suggest anything? Oh well India good luck ..............

  • on May 9, 2010, 21:05 GMT

Robin and Virat, we have full sympathies with you. Your talent and performance are going un-noticed. I guess the selectors have forgot how to select a team that can win you matches. Yuvi already not scoring runs, Jadeja have not done anythng significant so far with bat. The so called World's Best Batting Team has some serious issues with the selection. It was a lot better in yester years where the selectors did not have much options to choose from but I cant uderstand what is the problem with the selection committee now. They are still going on with "BIG NAMES". This is doing Indian team no good. Second time in a row we are out of the T20 World Cup so early. Selectors have no rights to play with our feelings like this... Same players are getting chances again and again. Robin Uthappa was the key to success in first T20 World Cup... How mush it is justified to keep him out of the team when he is performing. "Favouritsm" will not help in winning matches you need right players and team...

  • on May 9, 2010, 21:02 GMT

saurabh tiwary or rayudu is not there which is a joke!! ashoke dinda's inclusion was a welcome move...still jadeja??? why is that? haven't we seen enough of him?

You have bought team India from all high's of winning t20worldcup(during vengsarkar) to such a low that we can't even qualify... You are better as a Chennai Super Kings Manager.

  • vishalb on May 9, 2010, 20:28 GMT

Suresh Raina disgraceful as India captain. First let him go back and read the bouncer and new ball. 2 world cup flops and yet not enough?? Well Tiwari can bat as good as anybody in the list. Y choose Jadeja and Kohli when we know they cant clear 50 meters and dont possess the class in foreign soil. Well Rohit Sharma is from Mumbai..he has claa to score consistent 30's. Piyush Chawla case. Hilarious. Robin Uthappa. Resurgent and has to be on the list. Aniruddha. will play 2 matches for INDIA. Thanks sree kant.

  • on May 9, 2010, 20:13 GMT

I can't understand how could anyone ask for Irfan Pathan to be back? Dont we see the same experiment with Ravindra Jadeja failing for the Indian team? He clicks as a batsman in 1 out 15 innings, bats way down the order. Plus as a bowler, he was responsible for KINGS XI losing a number of matches in the last overs. Doesn't have a good yorker and he has completely forgotten his deadly in-swinging delivery.

    R. Shastri is very right in saying that Irfan is one promising story gone the wrong way..

  • riz2g00d on May 9, 2010, 20:06 GMT

Still no Irfan Pthan something is horribly wrong between him and the selectors..

  • on May 9, 2010, 19:50 GMT

1 Abhimanyu Mithun 2 Ajinkya Rahane/Suresh Raina 3 Amit Mishra 4 Cheteshwar Pujara 5 Dinesh Karthik C/WK 6 M Vijay 7 Pragyan Ojha 8 Ravindra Jadeja 9 Rohit Sharma 10 Shikhar Dhawan 11 Sudeep Tyagi 12 Umesh Yadav/Irfan Pathan 13 Vinay Kumar 14 Virat Kohli VC 15 Wridhiman Saha WK

Addendum to my earlier post. I have merely looked at the India A squad and the current squad. I have not gone out of the purview of both the squads and the only addition is Irfan. The team is arranged in alphabetical order. This is my squad for the Zimbabwe series. Suresh Raina guaranteed a position in the squad leave alone captian is just not on. He has not come on at all. His footwork and technique are quite funny to watch these days. The regression in his game is obvious and please if the IPL were to be a measure of international grade cricket then India should be getting the T20 WC every time. The gulf between international cricket and IPL is too vast to even discuss.

  • Maulik11 on May 9, 2010, 19:33 GMT

  • Cricfantoronto on May 9, 2010, 19:27 GMT

Just like so many others, me too feel that Chikka & co have done a blunder by not encouraging talented cricketers - Irfan, Robin and Ambatti Rayudu should have been there. They were not selected obviously not becos of cricketing reasons. Let us see how the selected group performs..

  • www.realcinemas.org on May 9, 2010, 19:24 GMT

  • Rajesh. on May 9, 2010, 19:20 GMT

Ideally, with his experience Dinesh Karthik should have been the captain.......... there seems to be a new-found obsession with Suresh Raina ever since CSK appointed him to take over from an injured MS Dhoni in the IPL......... not sure about his leadership qualities

It is surprising to see only 6 batsmen in the line-up. Its high time Pujara,Pandey, Ray-udu, tiwary and Utthapa get a chance. And yes where is Irfan? Anyways there may never seem to be a solution for a problem of plenty.

  • pacyCricket on May 9, 2010, 19:12 GMT

WHT do they think of yusuf & particularly jadeja???allrounder/bowler/batsman/superhero ---- Very poor team selection... whether the team wins or loses doesn't matter. who r the batsman in the sqad. Easiest thing for zim to reach final --- borrow groundsman from barbados and ask zim spinners to have a long run up and pitch it short - mind u no great pace needed.

  • joseyesu on May 9, 2010, 19:12 GMT

I dont think why selectors are ignoring Zaheer for this tour as he need more kind of game like this which can suit him very much. He can also show his potentials which he cannot in 2020. Good bye india

  • on May 9, 2010, 19:12 GMT

Well.... The India A team has more talent than this one. This is an international series as opposed to the A series being List A. The India A squad should have been playing in this tournament. The players i see from this squad that are good picks would be Virat Kohli, Amit Mishra, M Vijay, Dinesh Kartik, Rohit Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. Pujara and Rahane deserved a look in as did Manish Pandey. Mithun and Saha were good enough for test cricket but not good enough for this tour! Raina as Captain - if it is not the CSK Brand Ambassador acting as Chief Selector - that is the only rationale i can see in him leading the squad. The A squad could have carried many of the Dindas and Umesh Yadavs and Ashwins and not the other way around. Abhinav Mukund has had a decent season and he doesnt seem to be knocking on anyone's doors. Thankfully, Anirudha Srikanth and Arjun Yadav did not make it to the squad. Uthappa maybe 20-20 but not any game longer than that. RIDICULOUS SELECTION is what i can say

  • Ash8311 on May 9, 2010, 19:11 GMT

What are you doing Srikant, throw that fellow out, he has again given chance to Murli Vijay and Ravinder Jadeja, They will obiously do well in this no pressure tournament which has no value, Where is Robin Uthappa , Do you have some grudge against him? He is a guy at least who can hammer short pitch stuff.Srikant is the worst selector India had. He just externally shows a cool composure and has lost of politics in his mind. India is lossing focus, the test status is only because of Virender Sehwag. Dhoni did not have confidence to pick up Vinay Kumar or Piyush Chwla for both the matches, Dont know for what were they selected.

  • Jay9 on May 9, 2010, 19:02 GMT

Bring back Dilip Vengsarkar as selector ! Srikkanth's selection committee is a disaster. This needs to be done before more promising player's careers are ruined. How disheartening it is for Manish Pandey,Robin Uthappa and Murali Karthik etc !!!

  • kumarnh on May 9, 2010, 18:59 GMT

and 8 bowlers(9 after piyush comes in) and 7 batsmen add to that the bowlers in raina, rohit and yusuf. i doubt if the selectors know anything about team balance.

  • kumarnh on May 9, 2010, 18:54 GMT

kris does'nt deserve 2 be respected anymore. his selection is just like his batting mindless, aimless and foolish. robin does'nt figure in the second string Indian lineup and yet only spin hitters like Yusuf are persisted with.i know yusuf is a big hitter but not an alround hitter like robin and Indians r not failing against spin its againt the fast bowlers. Robin got most of his sixes against quality fast bowlers. And he can keep wickets as well so he could have been selected in place of Naman as well if the selectors were so keen on retaining yusuf.

IPL has to go first. It has never been beneficial for national team. Either Robbin,Kohli or Manish Pandey should be opening with Gambhir. How Jadeja could be selected is a great question mark, without match practice. He is bowling short pitch, leg stump & full tosses, grounding catches, struggling to get connection with bat.India deserves the result it got. When success of IPL is everything for BCCI what else can be expected from world cup.

Until we have selectors like Srikanth, who only favor their home state, we will continue to loose more series. Isn't their a better all-rounder in Indian than Jadeja and Yusuf, how many more chances do they need to prove. Don't we have any young wk and batsman than Dinesh Karthik, he is one guy who always make the squad but never feature in the playing X1. MVijay, why is he picked again, because of his IPL heroics, if we go by IPL can the selector explain why robin, raydu, tiwary were not picked. If some one has gone by the ranji figures, why is there no manish pandey or mithun or abhishek nayyar?

It's a shame that these bunch of morons select a team for our country, and they never justify the team selection.

  • krsna76 on May 9, 2010, 18:17 GMT

The real reason for selecting this second rung team is becoz of the company that is telecasting this tri-series. • on May 9, 2010, 17:56 GMT

I hate this Srikanth, loser selector. He has a grudge against uthappa thats why he didn't pick him in squad. I want him thrown out of the selecting pannel immediately this is India's 3rd consecutive loss at icc events. We really needed robin as the opener in the tournament instead of surali vijay. And the worst part is Uthappa is not going to feature in the tour against Zimbabwe. well done chikka select the entire CSK team to play for India and you should take FULLl responsibility for the world cup debacle

  • SavvyCanadian on May 9, 2010, 17:54 GMT

Jadeja does not deserve his place in the team - neither as a Bowler (loly-pop spin, gets hit for Sixes very easily), nor as a Batsman (doesn't have the guts or the power in his wrists to go for big shots). Why does Irfan Pathan always get ignored? Have the selectors anything personal against him? He is a useful medium pacer and a reliable batsman, infact he is the best all-rounder in India today. It is a shame that a person who should be a part of any main-stream Indian team, does not find a place even in the Second-string Indian team and more surprisingly, not even in the India A team!! First thing India should do is remove these Selectors...it is clear they are biased and partial.

When entire India knows that utthappa had to be in the team, why didn't the so called 'expert' selectors know???

Mr Cheeka... what are you doing??? This team doesn't even deserve to be called an India 'A' team. What were you thinking while you were selecting this absurd team??

I think we are trying to help zimbabwe to improve their ICC rankings.

if india want all rounder why not irfan pathan in the place of jadeja

  • neo1899 on May 9, 2010, 17:50 GMT

I can understand the rationale behind resting Sachin. Dhoni, Zaheer, Nehra and may be Sehwag who is recovering from an injury. But why are they resting Gambhir and Yuvraj? They are completely out of form and they need to spend some time in the middle to regain their form. Why on earth Robin Uthappa is not in this squad? This is hard to understand. I also feel instead of Piyush Chawla they should have included Irfan Pathan as Indians have many spin bowling options.

  • highlander0007 on May 9, 2010, 17:50 GMT

  • Souvik_Dutta on May 9, 2010, 17:47 GMT

Starting from T20 World Cup to this series, the team selection is really pathetic. Still Jadeja is in and Uthappa is out? Irfan Pathan is not in? Secondly why the senior players are out after such pathetic performance? Remove all the selectors and include Sourav Ganguly to manage Indian team. He has done it before, surely he can do the same now. SRIKANTH, BEING A VERY BIG FAN OF YOURS ASKING YOU TO LEAVE.

  • arunsen on May 9, 2010, 17:46 GMT

Srikanth doesn't have any idea at all... After all he just made India lose the T20 world cup once again quite comfortably. Putting in out of form players and leaving out in form players like Uthappa, Tiwary, Irfan, Rayadu. I dont know why Vinay Kumar has been selected. He hasn't got a chance in any of the matches and its well known as soon as he has been announced in the squad. Now he is planning to make indian team more worse than ever. Still excluded Uthappa and Irfan, but what's the reason for that?? He has to be out of selection committee. I think after this zimbawe tour he is gonna pick a team in the following line up only. Badrinath (WC), Ashwin, Kaif (C), Anirudh, Jogindher sharma, B akhil, goswami, Tare, jaskaran singh, yo mahesh, vinay kumar, k goel, ishanth sharma & W saha. He will announce to media and say this team can beat any side in the world.

  • abhi_242671 on May 9, 2010, 17:46 GMT

Utthappa shoul be picked ahead of Jadeja. Why we need 5 spinners (Yusuf,Ojha,Mishra,Ashwin,Jadeja) ?? For me Jadeja is just an left arm spinner who can bowl a bit. I don't understand the policies of these selection panel.I can see Ambati Rayudu is also missing he is not even in the India A team. Who is Kedar Jadav.. He is in India A team for England. Is he better than Rayudu or Utthappa..lol.

  • roxstar on May 9, 2010, 15:44 GMT

Real commendable decision of BCCI to rest the Seniors and test out the fringe players. Good Selection except for the overall balance .. since its got just seven specialist batsmen. Kudos to Srikkanth n Co. not to get carried away by good three or four 20 ball innings of Uthappa and Saurabh Tiwary and select them for the ODIs. Its an entirely different ball game after all. Badrinath and Manish Pandey deserved to be in, having had outstanding domestic seasons. And the best part about this selection is not to go back to tried and tested failures like Irfan, RP, Sreesanth and Kaif. If anything, Sidharth Trivedi and VRV Singh could have been looked at.

  • fifth-umpire on May 9, 2010, 15:42 GMT

As usual horible decision by the selectors. How can they not include Robin Uthappa. What more he has to do to be included in the team.Entire cricketing world saw his performance in IPL.Feel sad for him. This selection commitee is a bunch of jokers.

  • on May 9, 2010, 15:36 GMT

C'mon chikaaa. What happened to you? Why Robin Uthappa not even for T20s and why not Irfan Pathan a much needed experienced pace bowler in a \n all new bowling side?

  • vinz88 on May 9, 2010, 15:03 GMT

it's a good move from selectors to rest the sr players and bring in the young blood..but i am really disappointed with the team selection..why the hell they haven't picked players like uthappa, ambatti rayudu, saurabh tiwary, manish pandey who have proved their mettle..i don't understand why they have picked yadav, pankaj, vinay and dinda??pankaj is really an useless bowler..there are other players who are more eligible for selection..this selection committee is utter waste..ravindra jadeja is such an overrated player..he haven't justified his selection yet..i think he and pathan should have been dropped and should have given chance to other players like uthappa and all..and why the hell is pragyan ojha being selected now?he should have been there in the T20 world cup team..he was the best bowler in ipl3..this committee is full of stupid selectors..our cricket won't improve till we change this lazy selection..better give the cricket fans a chance, they will pick the best team for india!

  • Sekhar_S on May 9, 2010, 15:00 GMT

Uthappa should have been there in place of Yusuf Pathan and Abhishek Nayar in place of Ravindra Jadeja.Except for these two flaws, the rest of the squad is good.I hope Uthappa gets selected for the Asia Cup.That's a bigger stage for him where he deserves to be present.

  • on May 9, 2010, 15:00 GMT

I really cant understand the exclusion of Robbin Uthappa. Was expected to be part of the World T20, not selected, and now not even in this "A" team? Compare Karthik and Uthappa... as batsmen cum wk, I wonder if anyone except for that CS (Chief Selector or Chennai Srikanth, whatever u call him!) would have opted for Robbie.

  • madhusooo on May 9, 2010, 14:58 GMT

I think irfan and uthappa must be in the team...as they have shown better shows in the IPL-3...irfan pathan is the best fast bowling all rounder in india..so i'll say that this is nt a gud selection.

  • ShaliJ on May 9, 2010, 14:54 GMT

Great decision by the BCCI. They always tried to give maximum chances for youngsters. This will be opportunity to practise a new captain too.Suresh Raina deceives it.As a Sri Lankan hope a similar response from our cricket board because we also have good young guns such as Dinesh Chandimal,Janaka Gunarathna,Lahiru Thirimanne,Sanjaya Gangodawila and specially the exceptional leggie Seekuge Prasanna.

Why there is no Irfan Pathan,Robin Uthappa??

And if any of the 7 batsman get injured who is going to replace him and what is the use of having so many inexperienced fast bowlers who don't have any int'l exposure.

Only silver lining is to pick Naman Ojha.

what r u guys going behind spin we have enough partimers, 3 spinners, 4 seamers, 1 wk, if he is injured uttappa can be used, Raina does not have the captancy quality, we just saw yesterdayagainst AUS how much he is matured. he is not technically sound like rohit, uttappa & Virat.

OMG!!! I though it was a bi-series. but its a triangular series. that tooo with Srilanka as the third one. Well what to say now. Is this team gonna dust likes of Jaywardena, Sangga & Malinga. Only selectors can tell y they picked up a team that has only raina to be the regular member of the ODIs squad. This shocker however further justifies my points i made earlier in my post that mentioned neglections of few forgotten players like irfan, kaif, sreesanth and yes not to forget.. Robin Utthapa..

BCCI Selection panel -- for heven's sake think of million peoples sentiments before selecting a 'C' grade team for an international tour may it b zimababwe itself. • aditya104 on May 9, 2010, 13:24 GMT

Well said Sherrif Sayeed. This selection committee is ridiculous. Remember Srikkanth's apology to the whole of India after 1st Test against SA where India lost by an innings because of bad selection. Seems like Sreekanth hasn't learnt from his mistake. And those who don't learn from their mistakes are called fools on this planet. Can you imagine what will be going on in the minds of those players who deserved and expected selection but didn't make through. Robin Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh, Manoj Tiwary, Ambati Rayudu, Saurabh Tiwary, Mohammad Kaif. Also, we have seen in the IPL that Raina is not a good captain. Karthik is a good captain.

  • CricketZealot on May 9, 2010, 13:23 GMT

The selection of Umesh Yadav to replace Praveen Kumar is perplexing. Surely the team will never select a debutant in the Super8 stage. So why not pick an experienced player like Irfan Pathan who could play immediately. There seems to be some preset notions or a more sinister agenda.

I would like to see Irfan pathan in the squad who is the best fast bowling all-rounder in India. Also he had a very good IPL in terms of picking the wickets, who is the second in the fast bowling dept.

  • shailendra.raghuwanshi on May 9, 2010, 13:18 GMT

i think this is frustating for robin uthappa he barely played bad in ipl . i don't know what he had to do to sellect in indian team. best wishes for him . indian selectors are pool of jokers somebody said i think its wrong

  • on May 9, 2010, 13:17 GMT

oh come on....... where is robin n irfan????

  • renukumar on May 9, 2010, 13:17 GMT

I think this is a very good move by Indian selectors. As we have seen in the last match against Australia that except for Rohit, who batted excellently(even though its his first game in this world cup),no one seems to be deserved in this Indian team.

  • on May 9, 2010, 13:13 GMT

Almost all of the above comments have about how the selection took place. My point of view is focused on why is the tour in place when the BCCI wants to rest 9 of its top players. Why have the tour at all and give everyone a good rest instead of sending a second string inexperienced bunch of boys who will get slaughtered by the media in the event of a defeat and probably put an end to their career as soon as it began.

  • ssenthil on May 9, 2010, 13:07 GMT

Suresh Raina as captain???? Virat Kohli Vice-Captain ???

    Great.

No Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvi, Mahi, Gauti also?

Great. I know why no Sachin but all others are rested??? due to IPL???

But It's a great Great great opportunity for many many young Indian players waiting for the chance.

    Honestly Y.Pathan doesn't deserve a place.

All the Best for all the Young Guns.

  • kitten on May 9, 2010, 13:03 GMT

Fantastic team! I love to see promising youngsters in the team, and this is indeed a good time to test the youngsters. Kudos to the selectors. Brilliant batsmen, very good spinners and fast bowlers to round it up. They will have a successful tour I feel, and even if things don't go 100% well, they will have at least acquired a wealth of experience for the future. Way to go India.

  • Idie on May 9, 2010, 13:02 GMT

Where is Irfan Pathan ? And why isn't the media questioning the selection comittee to find out what they think about him ?? Its time they picked him if they have him in plans for 2011 world cup.

  • anil80 on May 9, 2010, 13:02 GMT

manish pandey, abhimanyu mithun, robin uthappa, abhishek nayar why are these players not in team dont tell me dinda and umesh yadav are better than mithun

  • Arifhashmy on May 9, 2010, 12:57 GMT

its good to see the young blood coming into indian team but the way the team is selected seems to be missing some good names. (Robin Uttapha, Irfan Pathan, Mohammed Kaif) who have good international experience seems like Srikant and Dhoni are running there monoply of selecting the players as they like which can clearly be seen in the T20 world cup. when Praveen got injured likes of Irfan Pathan fits better than Umesh Yadav (Irfan has done fairly in IPL scoring 400+ runs and taking 16 wickets) but still is been left out wonder why?... By this attitued of Srikanth and Dhoni i don't see any good future of Indian Cricket. Hope they wake up soon rather than later....

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:56 GMT

I like this team .... finnally a look into a future india , still unsure about Raina as captain ... i think Karthik might have been a better choice ... but kohli as VC is awesome. good to see ashwin and Naman Ojha in the indian fold but i still think our pace is weak

  • weirdodan on May 9, 2010, 12:56 GMT

Robin Uthappa being neglected again... God only knows what's wrong with these selectors. Sigh!

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:56 GMT

Gud to see tht BCCI has given chances to younger / fresh talent for the upcomming series agst zimbabwe. Though i still feel this team is capable enough to make out for rested players.

However, wht i feel is that BCCI should have given chances of comeback for some forgotten players like Irfan, Kaif, Ishant, Sreesanth and others to get back in groove at foreign soil. Whatever it may b, but these guyz have loads of experience of intl cricket in them which i think they too wud have grabbed this chance and their experience wud have come in use in this series when compred to quite a few more debutants (4 new names i think r already in this squad) than any other team wud have picked for this tour.

Wish all the best to Raina & Co for this tour and also to MSD from all of our nation for the upcomming game against the WI and the others to follow. How gud it wud b to see a repeat of 2007 T20I WC Final making all us indians proud. Best of luck MSD & Team India. Chak de Chak De Chakde India!

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:56 GMT

The selection is good...it's good to see the young guns getting some chance but why ROBIN UTHAPPA is not selected in this tour....If the selection of naman ojha, pragyan ojha . R Ashwin are on the basis of IPl...then i think Robin is the strong candidate to make a comeback in International one day and T20 side. I heard by other senior players and even by our selector that the team for the world cup has already been selected..so they can't select Robin Uthappa otherwise he is in superb form and must be selected...and still he is not being included. The players who played good in IPL..like Murali Vijay and Vinay Kumar got the chance in Indian team after getting few key players injured then why not he ??? Does he require a GODFATHER in Cricket team to be part of Indian team or ability and form is most important.

  • sdpak on May 9, 2010, 12:53 GMT

Given his recent form and the confidence he has been exuding while on the crease, I think Robin Uthappa deserved a chance. I hope this does not shake his confidence and motivates him further to work harder and perform even better.. And I also hope selectors have a plan for him.. He is a much improved batsman and a tremendous match-winner for India in the reserves now.. important to keep nurturing his confidence.

Indian selectors are certainly doin the right thing here by picking up youngsters and giving seniors some well deserved rest . But i think theyhav made one big mistake here by not picking robin uthappa for this series and for world T20 as well only god knows what they are trying to do here. They should give him a chance when he is in form .

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:49 GMT

WHY On earth is ROBIN UTHAPPA not there!!! THIS is totally UNFAIR~!!! he has beeen striking the ball CLEANLY and played very well!!! SRIKANTH is surly PLOTTING against HIM!!!!!

  • Crckt-Xprt on May 9, 2010, 12:48 GMT

No Robin Uthappa ? It is becoming increasingly evident that he is not liked by the great selectors ! Because if current form is the criterion Robin should be the automatic choice.

  • sdpak on May 9, 2010, 12:45 GMT

This is a very poor squad... And we have Sri Lanka (almost a regular in all Indian triseries these days) playing too... its fine if it was India Zimbabwe and Kenya... Atleast players like Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, Ishanth Sharma, Sudeep Tyagi could have been given a chance to pull their weight and get back some confidence and revive their career... Only Rohit has been given that chance... which bamboozles me the purpose of this squad... which looks weaker than an India A squad!

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:42 GMT

I mean what were the selectors thinking when they decided to do this! I am all for youngsters getting chance, but 9 first choice players not being in the squad worries me a bit. We will surely miss the bowling trio of nehra, zaheer and Bhajji and of course the batsman!

  • radnus4u on May 9, 2010, 12:40 GMT

Good Job selectors. Why Irfan pathan is not selected? He is the only medium pace allrounder available in the country and he is a much better batsman than his brother, Yusuf>

  • Crckt-Xprt on May 9, 2010, 12:40 GMT

Players like Harbhajan, Zaheer & Yuvraj will not be missed anyway. The selectors may as well let them know that there are better replacements available now and for the future.

  • vibh_ch on May 9, 2010, 12:35 GMT

The way the Indian team is being selected in recent times,is is difficult to support them. For heaven's sake, pick those with real pedigree.Jadeja has been in the team for quite some time without doing much.Yusuf somehow manages to do well in the domestic games where the bowling is below intl. stds.Agreed,he cant help it,but he gives absolutely no confidence when up against quality bowling.Same with Vijay. From nowhere comes Pankaj.Dinda seems the modern day visitor to the team.If you pick Vijay in ODI from IPL,why not Uthappa?Where did all of a sudden Piyush go,if you thought he was good enough for T20WC.Ashwin is a good choice.Kohli could have been made the captain,he is expected to be a long term option.Pandey is clearly a player streets above Yusuf,Vijay.Though he did not do much in IPL3,anyone who followed his progress in Ranji would have formed a high opinion.A talent like him deserves a chance early in his career,he is no Badrinath.Show clarity in your thinking Boss!

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:32 GMT

This is gotta be real interesting! This aint a selection blunder; all the players here have done reasonably or exceptionally well in the domestic circuit and in the IPL! Raina is quite a cool one, and being prepared as a future captain of India!

And what wonders me is that, no experienced players, barring Raina, Karthick, Sharma are in the team; Others are good players, no doubt about that! But, when young bunch of guys spend their time with the experienced, they will learn much better! To put it this way, they will be students without many teachers!

I'm not happy with the selection comitee decision to go ahead with ravindra jadeja and not selecting Robin Uthappa for the tour to zimbabwe. Robin was not given enough oppurtunity as of Yusuf who hasn't proved at international leave even after 3 years. Also player like Ishant should have been given a chance who would gain confidence playing with zimbabwe. One cant be shocked to c a player from each state instead of performance in the future.

Can't recall when was last time such a second string team was selected. May be the split because of commonwealth games in 1998 comes closest. This team selection leaves many question marks. Where is Uthappa? or Irfan Pathan? or Mithun? Can't get around what the selectors were thinking.

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:22 GMT

Obviously, India are gonna be beaten black and blue in Zimbabwe.

  • nangoel on May 9, 2010, 12:17 GMT

  • mk2710 on May 9, 2010, 12:17 GMT

Surprised that in this team also utappa or panday not there, i dont think this guys are that much bad performers to compare pathan, rohit, who are got lot of chances.

  • navathej on May 9, 2010, 12:17 GMT

This step by the selectors has been by far the best thing they have done for Indian cricket. It would test the second string players from the country to the extent o international level.Lets see how they stand up to the task and show the temperament required at the highest level. One change i would have liked to see is dinesh being made the captain instead of raina. Its thrusting too much of a responsibility on the kid, dinesh is experienced enough and has handled captaincy better at lower level.

  • on May 9, 2010, 12:13 GMT

now this is too much...........still no Irfan Pathan..........selectors could hav atleast tried him against weaker oppositions like zimbabwe..........im sorry to say but i think that the selectors are intentionally trying to end Irfan's career by not supporting him from the past one year during his slightly bad form with the ball........not many countries get a treasured player like Irfan pathan......... Ravindra Jadeja shud be dropped immediately...........now the selectors will only select those players fr the world cup next year whom they like and not the ones who actually deserve a place in the squad. All Irfan Pathan fans can now stop expecting anything gud frm the selection committee and just watch slow and boring players like Ravindra Jadeja playing fr India for a long-long time.

  • adv.sabarinath on May 9, 2010, 12:13 GMT

haha ... this is so laughable ... even in this "C" grade team Irfan Pathan does not get a look in ... very very baffling .. if India needs to be a force to reckon with in faster pitches with juice on them they need a bowling allrounder and Irfan Pathan has his credentials rightly intact for it .. Agreed that he is under performing right now but India is the one who is going to gain should he regain his flair his touch and his once incisive swing bowling. Very happy to see 3 spin bowlers in the sqaud on the fast pitches in Zimbabwe, job well done selectors. Pankaj Singh, what good have you done over the last season, he does not merit his place in the team. Lastly, it was quite funny to read in the paragraph above that senior players were rested, they just missed citing Yuvi's absence, probably because he is a junior player or probably because he might have got the axe from the team altogether, just guessing.
