A fitting knockout punch, and this series is alive! India bulldoze their way to their first win over Australia in a home ODI since 2007, and also consign the world champions to their heaviest-ever defeat in the format! Slower yorker that dips on the batter late and finishes on off stump. Wareham shapes for the scoop but has absolutely no pace to work with. Makes a feeble attempt and the ball goes past the bat to leave off stump flattened. India level the series, and they have done it in some style tonight!
IND Women vs AUS Women, 2nd ODI at New Chandigarh, IND Women vs AUS Women, Sep 17 2025 - Match Result
8:55pm That will be all from us for this game. We hope you enjoyed our coverage and would love your company on Saturday as well, with these two sides fighting it out to win the series. In the meantime, you can head over to our coverage of the Pakistan-UAE game, which, after some to-and-fro, is going ahead and will act as a virtual knockout. Until next time, from Chetan, Sudarshanan, Thilak and myself, it is goodbye!
Smriti Mandhana, Player of the Match: The last two hundreds which I got against Australia were in a losing cause, so happy we won the match today. Game plan was simple - to make use of the powerplay and then try and build and innings, and if it was in my slot, to go after it. (On targeting an above-par score) It depends on the conditions and who we play. You know the Australian team and you need to get 280-290 so our bowlers get that extra cushion. The wicket is really flat, so had to be aggressive. Throughout the World Cup as well, there wouldn't be one game where I won't be aggressive, but it will depend on the conditions. (On her opening partnership with Rawal) We complement each other well. She is calm and composed. I am also that way. We do not complicate stuff. It is going well and hopefully it keeps going well.
Harmanpreet Kaur, India captain: We are happy that we played good cricket - that is what we discussed in the last team meeting, to stick to our plans and keep doing those things again and again. We talk about keeping things simple and clear, and that is something that always works for us. We kept things simple and clear today as well, and that gives us breakthroughs whenever we need. And we want to keep doing that again and again. We got runs from Smriti but none of us scored runs, but still we were able to get to 300. That is something we talk about - keep batting and now we have depth in our batting. (On their catching) Today also we missed a few chances, but our bowlers kept giving us chances so that we could capitalize and keep the result in our favour. This series is where we want to give chance to each and everyone. That is something we kept in our mind - to try a few combinations, and happy with today's combination. Happy everyone took responsibility and contributed.
Alyssa Healy, Australia captain: (On the toss decision and if she would change anything) No, not really. Good preparation for the World Cup. You don't get to choose every time. They (India) were pretty good in all facets of the game and (we) probably got a little outplayed. I thought we did well to hold them back. Thought they were on track for over 300. They bowled really well with the new ball and we did not get off to the start we wanted to. They bowled straight with straight fields and changed their pace. Some great learnings for us, good to have these opportunities heading into do-or-die World Cups.
Hypocaust: "India have broken a record that has stood since the deciding match of the inaugural World Cup, 52 years ago - the very first women's ODI tournament. An historic achievement." -- This is the entire list of Australia's biggest margin of defeats (by runs) in women's ODIs.
8:32pm A complete performance by India. Australia have never lost by these many runs in a women's ODI, and the fact that India have done something they had not done previously for the last 18 years, also illustrates what they have accomplished today. Their tactic of having the extra bowler up their sleeve worked a charm, with each of their six front-line bowlers among the wickets. Their fielding was much better too and even though they put down a few chances, they made up for it by holding on to the tougher ones.
Renuka, back in the mix after nursing an injury, got things underway removing Voll for a duck. Goud then chipped in with the wicket of Healy. The spinners then tightened the screw and none of the Australian batters managed to find any rhythm. Sutherland top-scored with 45 and Perry threatened with 44, but that was about it for the visitors, and in the end, they fell well, well short.
Arundhati Reddy: Feels great. We did a lot of planning. Really happy the bowling unit stood up. The batters did well to reach 290. Crucial for us to step in today and glad we could do the job tonight. (On their fielding) We spoke about that a lot. Wanted to come in with a lot of energy. We know the lapses that happened and wanted to stand up. We have it in us to be a very good fielding side. In the crucial moments, we took our chances (tonight). (On keeping the scoring rate up) It is a good batting track and really important for us to keep going. The batters did a fantastic job to keep up the tempo. Wanted to give my best (having gotten a game) and really happy to hold on to crucial catches.
