Alex Thomson suspended his career as a PE teacher to try to build a career in county cricket. A capable batter who bowls offspin, he was recruited by Warwickshire from Staffordshire at the end of the 2017 season, having also played first-class cricket with Cardiff MCCU. He left for Derbyshire during the summer of 2021, initially on loan before signing a two-year contract and pushing his case in all three formats. In 2023, he finished as Derbyshire's leading wicket-taker in the County Championship - despite only playing 10 games - with 31 at 35.83.
