Shadman Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Joy put on a big stand  •  BCB

Tea Bangladesh 198 for 1 (Mahmudul 94*, Shadman 80) trail Ireland 286 (Stirling 60, Carmichael 59, Mehidy 3-50) by 88 runs
Mahmudul Hasan Joy stood firm on 94 not out at tea in Sylhet, steering Bangladesh to 198 for one in reply to Ireland's 286. Ireland managed to take only a single wicket - that of Shadman Islam - in the entire session.
Mahmudul batted confidently through the offside and down the ground, striking eight fours and a six so far. He was unbeaten alongside Mominul Haque, who was on 21 at the interval.
Shadman played an accomplished innings of 80, hitting nine fours and a six. He dominated the morning session as Bangladesh raced to 109 runs in 24 overs. The left-hander struck several elegant cover drives and timed three boundaries through midwicket. He also rotated the strike efficiently, collecting 30 singles during his stay.
Matthew Humphreys eventually removed Shadman in the 42nd over, having him caught behind. The pair added 168 runs, Bangladesh's fourth-highest opening partnership in Tests.
Both Shadman and Mahmudul reached their fifties in the first session, also bringing up the century stand before lunch. Earlier in the morning, Ireland's innings lasted only 13 minutes as Taijul Islam and Hasan Mahmud picked up the last two wickets.
Ireland's total of 286 was built around fifties from Paul Stirling and Cade Carmichael, while Curtis Campher and Lorcan Tucker fell in the forties. Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed three wickets, with Taijul and Mahmud taking two apiece. Bangladesh, however, were guilty of dropping five catches on the first day.
