A stylish left-hand batter with supple wrists, a flowing cover drive and outstanding athleticism in the field, JP Duminy had an international career that was shaped as much by injury as by ability. As an effective middle-order batter, canny offspinner and leader, Duminy became one of South Africa's most influential limited-overs players of his generation.
He made his ODI debut in 2004 but did not impress in his first five games and was dropped. He returned two years later, but then went on to miss out on the 2007 World Cup. But Duminy's career changed course on the 2008-09 tour of Australia, when he was drafted into the Test side after Ashwell Prince broke his thumb. An unbeaten 50 in Perth set up a famous chase, and he produced 166 in Melbourne in his next innings, anchoring South Africa's historic series win. Those performances made him a star, but inconsistency cost him his Test place the following year.
He returned strongly with 103 against New Zealand in Wellington in 2012, the year South Africa became the world's No. 1 Test side. An Achilles injury on the tour of Australia that year sidelined him again, but he came back in 2013, and made two hundreds in the span of three Tests against Australia and Sri Lanka the year after.
Duminy remained central to South Africa's white-ball plans all through, making important contributions in the 2011 ODI World Cup, becoming South Africa's leading T20I run-scorer in 2013, and rising to the No. 1 spot in the ICC's T20I batting rankings. He captained South Africa at the 2014 T20 World Cup and played each of the first six editions of that tournament.
That pedigree translated into demand for him in the IPL, where he played multiple seasons for Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Recurrent injuries curtailed his international career in his later years, and he retired in 2019, after which he transitioned into coaching and administrative roles within South African cricket.
