As it happened: IPL 2022 - Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants, Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

By Shashank Kishore and Hemant Brar

Badoni, Lewis seal LSG's first win

An unbeaten 40-run stand off just 13 balls takes Super Giants to their first IPL win. Evin Lewis has been the star, but how calm under pressure has Ayush Badoni been? Walked across to sweep Dube over deep square off the first ball of the penultimate over to kick-start their final ascent. With Super Giants needing nine off six, he lumped two massive blows to seal the deal.
Did Super Kings miss someone of Deepak Chahar's experiment? Dew seemed to have hampered much of CSK's plans. Moeen bowled just one over. Jadeja bowled just two overs. A combination of running into two left-handers and bowling with a wet ball on a greasy outfield may have contributed to it.

Comes down to the final two overs

Twice in two days a bowler bowling his first over in the 19th in a chase - Venky Iyer yesterday, Dube today
Super Giants need 34 off 12. He isn't express pace; generally bowls cutters into the pitch. The key here is to ensure he bowls outside Lewis' hitting arc. Anything full and the straight short boundary will be peppered. But hey, Super Kings will be making a mistake if they discount Ayish Badoni here.
Dube hâs had an excellent day with the bat. Tonight was only the seventh time he'd played over 20 balls in an innings. Having been sent in to pinch-hit, he managed to do more than just that. His 49 was studded with some monstrous bowls. All that could amount to nothing if he has a bad over here.
That Chennai Super Kings are still in int is because of Dwaine Pretorius. Terrific control over his change-ups. Supremely accurate. Sussed up the conditions very early. To bowl the way he did on the face of dew - outstanding. 4-0-31-2.

A left-left combination

Seemingly, Pandey was promoted to No. 3 to ensure they keep a right-left combination going, but he fell early. Now, they could've either sent in Hooda, Badoni or Lewis. And Super Giants chose Lewis, even if it meant deviating from the right-left template. He has struck them well since arriving. Had used the depth of the crease to convert Yorker-length to half-volley in demolishing his first six off Deshpande. He has raced to 23 off 11. Game on.

The Pandey experiment

Traditionally, Manish Pandey has been a slightly slow starter. Here, he has come in to bat with a platform set at 99 for 1 in 10.1 overs in their chase of 211. That Super Kings have a wicket after two shelled chances are due to Ambati Rayudu's brilliance. Back-tracking from short fine leg, he holds on to a swirler.Pandey doesn't last long, though, so the massive show of confidence hasn't paid off here as he drills one straight to DJ Bravo at mid-off. Super Giants 114 for 2 off 12 overs. De Kock, who raised his half-century off just 34 balls, needs to bat through, or at least until the final three overs.

de Kock, Rahul reprieved

Batters have played the spinners without worrying about turn. Balls have skidded on nicely and Rahul has feasted on Moeen and Jadeja. Moeen, who put down de Kock in the sixth over off Bravo, has now seen Rahul being put down by Tushar Deshpande. He did him in the air as Rahul sliced it over cover. Deshpande, running back, was never in control and barely got his hand on it as he dived full stretch. And as his body skidded through the turf, you could literally see oodles of dew coming off the surface. This is as good a start as LSG could've asked for.

LSG's counter punch

CSK 57, LSG 51
CSK: Loss of Gaikwad. LSG: No loss
CSK: 9 fours, 3 sixes LSG: 8 fours, 1 six.
Rahul and de Kock are off the blocks quickly. Ominously from CSK's point of view, they've managed to do so without playing a shot in anger. De Kock has been smashing them through the line, Rahul has punched on anything short or wide. To add insult to injury, Moeen Ali has shelled a simple chance at the edge of the ring at mid-off to reprieve de Kock on 30.

Who is Mukesh Choudhary?

The unavailability of one Rajasthan bowler paves way for another. Deepak Chahar's injury concerns have thrown CSK's bowling plans off guard for the moment. Desperately trying to fill up the gap, they've turned to 25-year old Mukesh Choudhary, a tall left-arm seamer.
Born in Rajasthan, Choudhary plays domestic cricket for Maharashtra. Interestingly, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad, last season's orange cap holder, who recommended Choudhary's name to the franchise ahead of the auction where he was signed for his base price of INR 20 lakhs.
Choudhary bowls in the 140. He swings the ball back into the left-hander and is capable of bowling the heavy ball. His tall frame helps him extract bounce even on the most docile surfaces. Choudhary made his debut for Maharashtra in 2017-18 and has so far featured in 13 first-class games that have fetched him 38 wickets. He has also featured in 12 List A and T20 games. He was the highest wicket-taker for Maharashtra at the 2021-22 Vijay Hazare Trophy. His 10 wickets in five games came at an average of 32.

Super Kings finish with 210 for 7

The fireworks that Uthappa started never really stopped. Moeen Ali kept it going for a while before Dube took over. He struck 49 off just 30 balls and when he got out, Dhoni started by hitting the first two balls he faced for six and four. In fact, that was the first time in the IPL that Dhoni hit a six on the first ball he faced. He wrapped up the innings with yet another four as Super Kings finished on 210 for 7. Can Super Giants take advantage of the dewy conditions and chase this down? Stay tuned to find out.
"It's a great wicket, nice to get some runs," says Moeen Ali. "There is a lot of dew and they have a good batting line-up. So we have to bowl really well to win here. Robbie was fantastic today. He gave us a great start in the powerplay which allowed us to chew a few balls and keep going."

A superb spell from Bishnoi

...and what makes it even more special is the conditions and the match situation. Rayudu tries to take him on, swipes across the line but misses. The leg stump is out of its groove. Jadeja hits a boundary on the last ball of Bishnoi's spell but he still ends with figures of 4-0-24-2.
CSK 172 for 4 after 17. They will surely be eyeing in excess of 200.

Not Chameera's day in the field

Earlier in the evening, Dushmantha Chameera misfielded twice and on both occasions the ball went for four when it should have been only a single, or a couple at the most. Now he puts down a simple chance from Shivam Dube. It was a high full toss from Krunal Pandya and Dube swung across, only to mistime it to short fine leg. But Chameera couldn't hold onto it.
The dew hasn't helped LSG either. In fact, the ball is so damp that the umpires have decided to change it. A change ball, though, brings no change in fortunes for Pandya as Rauyudu dances down the track and launches it for a massive six.

CSK race to hundred in 9.1 overs

Dube continues in the same vein as Uthappa and hits Chameera for three fours in one over. From the other end, Moeen gets a streaky boundary, an outside edge that goes between the keeper and short third man. That brought up CSK's hundred in just 9.1 overs - the fastest for any team IPL 2022.
To provide some relief, Avesh removes Moeen on the first ball of the 11th over. Moeen went for the pull but ended up playing early and missed it altogether. The ball pinged the off stump.

50 and out

Uthappa brought up his fifty off just 25 balls, hitting eight fours and a six along the way. But it is Bishnoi once again who provides LSG with the breakthrough, this time with the ball. He got one to skid off the surface, as he does many times. Uthappa tried to flick it but was too late and the ball thudded into the front pad. The lbw appeal was denied by the on-field umpire but LSG went for the review and the ball-tracking showed it would have taken out the leg stump.
Shivam Dube is the new batter, which makes it two left-hand batters in the middle.

Fifty up in fifth over!

There's no stopping Uthappa. Tye had conceded only two in his first over but Uthappa had faced only one ball in that over. Now he has taken him to cleaners as well. Pull, steer, paddle and pull - that's four fours in the over. In between, some sloppy fielding allowed a brace, making it an 18-run over. Fifty came up in 4.4 overs.
From the other end, Moeen, the specialist spin-hitter, took apart Krunal Pandya, hitting him for two fours and s six. CSK finish the powerplay on 73 for 1. That's their joint-fourth-highest powerplay score.

Bishnoi's brilliance ends Gaikwad's stay

After two expensive overs, Rahul turned to Andrew Tye. With his third delivery, he pinged Ruturaj Gaikwad on the pads. There was a loud appeal for lbw but Gaikwad was looking to sneak in a leg-bye but Ravi Bishnoi's brilliance stunned him. The ball went towards the left of point, Bishnoi ran across, picked up the ball and nailed the direct hit at the striker's end. Gaikwad tried to get back but was well short.

What an eventful first over that was. Avesh Khan bowling to Robin Uthappa. The first ball is on the pads and Uthappa flicks it through midwicket. The next one is short and wide and Uthappa cuts it through point. Avesh makes the comeback two balls later by pinging the batter on the helmet. He tries another bouncer on the final ball of the over but it sails over the keeper for four byes.
In the next over, Uthappa flicks Chameera twice, first for six and then for four.
CSK are off: 26/0 after two.

LSG opt to bowl first

KL Rahul's smile tells you how important the toss is and how obvious it's to bowl first. "It's a fresh wicket, a bit of grass on it," he says. Only one change for LSG: Tye comes in for Mohsin Khan. Ravindra Jadeja says CSK would have bowled first too. Three changes for them: Moeen Ali is back, but they are going in with only three overseas players. Adam Milne has a side strain. Conway and Santner sit out too. Mukesh Choudhary and Dwaine Pretorius, apart from Moeen, are in.
Here are the XIs:
Chennai Super Kings 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 MS Dhoni, 6 Ravindra Jadeja (capt), 7 Dwaine Pretorious, 8 Shivam Dube, 9 Dwayne Bravo, 10 Mukesh Choudhary, 11 Tushar Deshpande

'Couldn't have started the campaign in any better way'

Those were the words of Lucknow Super Giants' captain KL Rahul. After his side lost their opening game against Gujarat Titans. And a big reason behind that was the team's middle order stepping up after the top had crumbled. Deepak Hooda and Ayush "Baby AB" Badoni helped them post a challenging total after the side was reeling at 29 for 4.
Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants' opponents today, also lost their opening game, but they too found positives in MS Dhoni and Dwayne Bravo striking form.
Now, it's a chance for both sides to convert those positives into points. The toss is 15 minutes away. Stay tuned.
