Taijul finishes with a six-for, takes Bangladesh to their first Test win against New Zealand at home! Length ball at 74ks landed outside leg and spun away sharply, went towards off. Sodhi tried to block it towards mid-off but the ball popped off the shoulder of the bat to Zakir at silly mid-off. Taijul walks back a couple of steps before roaring in delight.
Bangladesh vs New Zealand, 1st Test at Sylhet,BAN v NZ, Nov 28 2023 - Match Result
There we have it. A comprehensive win for the hosts after the honours were even after both teams' first innings. Shanto went big with the bat and found great support from the rest of the batting group. Taijul continued from where he left off to finish with a ten-for in the match. They're off the mark in the new WTC cycle. Join us for the Dhaka Test, where they'll have the chance to seal a historic series win. For now, it's goodbye from me, Ekanth, Sudarshanan, Abhimanyu and Srinidhi, who've all been on comms, and and our scorers, Chandan Duorah and M Venkat Raghav.
Galib: "I didn't know that the next match is in Dhaka. Hope the pitch is not the traditional one. This Sylhet pitch was awesome! " Dhaka pitch is more spinner friendly if I'm not wrong. Fully agree that this was a great pitch.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh captain: Credit goes to all the players, especially Taijul, Nayeem, Shoriful and Mehidy. Everyone enjoyed this match, we weren't thinking about the result. As youngsters, this was an opportunity to do well for our team and win it. We could've scored 50-odd runs more in the first innings but the bowlers did a great job. Batsmen will need to take more responsibility in the next game, that'll help. Thanks to God for giving me the opportunity to captain here. Half job done, everyone looking forward to the next Test.
Taijul Islam, POTM gets a cheer as he collects the cheque (from Shamim Chowdhury's translations) He's pleased to represent his country. Ten-wicket haul has lifted his spirit. Winning confidently takes them in the right frame of mind. He needed support from his team-mates which he got, things are gelling well.
Tim Southee, NZ captain: Disappointed but credit to Bangladesh. They played well. Our bowling group needs to create pressure for longer, batters need to stitch more partnerships, be better for longer. It was a pretty good wicket. There was spin which was expected in this part of the world. We have a couple of days to work on a couple of things for Dhaka, which will be a different surface. Everyone's striving to improve their game and that's what we ask from our guys. Guys need to contribute all the way down, nice that Kyle and Ish did that.
Shorif Uddin: "So who is going to win MOTM? Centurian Shanto on his test debut as Captain or 10 wicket holder Taijul? I am going with Taijul. " We'll find out soon in the presentation. Stay tuned.
Joy: "Surprising how similar Shanto and Williamson's wagon wheels are!"
Bpagur : "Good relief for BD fans after a frustrating ODI WC."
10:57pm It's been a long wait but one that ends in a triumphant win for Bangladesh. They all but sealed it yesterday, sending seven New Zealand batters back cheaply. They had no answers to Taijul, who exhibited the virtues of holding a consistent length to use the turn that the pitch offered. Daryl Mitchell, the only specialist batter who survived, started positively today but couldn't keep going, thanks to Taijul, who had sweeping aerially to backward square. Southee had a good cameo and Sodhi fought valiantly but it was 150 runs too many at the end. A couple of scooby snacks for Taijul at the end to nail a six-for.
Some video analysis being shown on TV to show Taijul's use of the crease

Defends the full one tossed up on leg
Full on fifth, blocks it with a fully open bat face to point

Full on fourth, punched to midwicket
Mark : "Sodhi has now faced more deliveries in this innings than any other NZ batsman apart from Mitchell. That tells a story right there."
Ajaz steps across after the ball is delivered, it landed wide and spun off a length. He was able to block it off the back foot towards cover
Leading edge lands safely and goes to point. Was a full ball at the stumps that Sodhi tried to turn square on the leg side but closed the bat face too early.
Mizbah: "Shanto's captaincy is just brilliant!"
Full on off, punched off the front foot to short cover's right
Full on middle and off, deadbatted in front
shajal: "in Bangla , there are two types of uncle: brother of mother is called mama( or mamu) and brother of father is Chacha..........but in English, all the same-uncle" Think it's similar in hindi but I'm no fan of or good at familial nomenclature
Pops wide of silly mid-off, leaping to the right. Very full ball, Sodhi tried to deadbat it but it hovered low in the air. Luckily far enough from the fielder
Length on fourth, pated with full-face to cover point
DaveP: "There was some discussion on day on whether BD should have included a second fast bowler. That matter has been firmly settled now."
Length on off, blocked in front
One ball for Ajaz to negotiate
Here's Isam hearing Mushfiqur Rahim "Shoriful upore asho dada, mathe ghash dekte ashso naki?" (Come up Shoriful brother. Have you come to watch the grass?)
