comes round the wicket and hits the middle stump, fires that full and quick, Martin exposes all three stumps and the ball crashes onto the base of middle, Johnson has 5 for 39, his best figures in Tests and his first five-wicket haul
Johnson leads clinical Australia to victory
Australia have won by 149 runs and that'll make them feel a lot better after a difficult tour of India. They were put in to bat in difficult conditions and things didn't look very rosy when they were bowled out for 214. However, they exploited the fragile batting of the visitors and got a handy first-innings lead. It was game on when Matt Hayden fell first ball but Katich's heroics made the difference. A target of 327 was always going to be tough for NZ despite the conditions easing out. The two late strikes last evening will bite for a while. New Zealand will have to capitalise on the better batting conditions at Adelaide.
Here's Vettori: "It's been a trend for a while now. We need one or two guys to stand up and score hundreds. There's some talented guys in the line-up. It's just a question of self belief.
Ponting: "We didn't have the best of games but it feels good to bounce back. We came to Brisbane after 6-7 weeks in India so out batsmen were a bit underprepared for the conditions. Hopefully our batsmen can get better in Adelaide. We're going to have to work a lot harder down there to get wickets. To get two late wickets last night was always a bonus."
Mitchell Johnson is the Man of the Match: "Good to get back on a nice and bouncy track. I felt pretty good back in India, I like to hit the deck hard. Me and Clark bowl well as a unit."
I would have given it to Katich, but Johnson was quite deadly with his pace and nip.
Thanks for your company though this Test. Thanks for the mails. I enjoyed bringing this interesting game to you. Join us for the second and final Test on Friday at the Adelaide Oval. On behalf of the crew, this is Kanishkaa signing off. Cheers!
bangs it towards the pads, he hops and gets an thin inside edge onto his pads
wasted delivery, slides it wide outside off and Martin's not interested in chasing that
take that! Southee makes room early and Clark follows him but overpitches on the pads, he gives it a whack and it lands a few rows over long-on
attempts another one, he makes room but gets an inside edge on to his pads
well well, Southee decides to have some fun and he backs away and scoops a full delivery down to the sightscreen
full and on the stumps and he works it away to the on side, loud cheers as he gets off the mark
Chris Martin walks in, this should be over very soon, unless Southee plays a blinder like he did at Napier
very tame dismissal indeed, Clark bowls the slower ball and O'Brien is foxed by that, he lunges forward to drive, the ball stops short on him and bobs off the edge and gives Michael Clarke at point the easiest of catches
lands it outside off, he shoulders arms
fires it full and wide outside off and a forward push is enough to beat mid-off
angles it on the body but it's much fuller, he nearly clips it on the full to short leg
takes his eyes off another nasty bouncer and the ball thuds into his shoulder
bangs in the bouncer and it sails over his arched back
shows very good technique on the forward defense
O'Brien walks in
Taylor goes and all the specialist batsmen and back in the pavilion, Johnson hits a full length outside off and gets it to move away with the angle, Taylor flays at it and the ball gets the toe edge of the bat
tries to mow this one across the line but the ball hits him outside the line of the legstump, Clark appeals
tries to work it through the on side but finds mid-on
moves across his stumps and works it with the swing to the on side
keeps a little low outside off and Taylor lets it go
appeal, it pitches outside off and hits his thigh just outside the line of the off stump as he tries to mow it across the line
