there it is! Short ball that he pulls through square leg and Guptill has his century and gets his team home
England vs New Zealand, 1st ODI at London, May 31 2013 - Ball by Ball Commentary
New Zealand won by 5 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)
Well that's all from Lord's, read all about New Zealand's victory. The second ODI is coming up on Sunday, 10.45am BST start again at the Ageas Bowl, Monty and I shall be there so I hope you can join us. Bye for now...
Presentation time. "I don't think it's a wake up call," says Alastair Cook. "We didn't get it quite right today. We did that hard bit getting in but we didn't go on to make the big score that you need. It's not concerning but it's just frustrating. 260 would have been a good effort and we were in a position to do that.
"Boyd Rankin has had a great start this year for Warwickshire and he's tall and we're looking for variety in our seamers. Finn and Broad are a little bit concerning so fingers crossed they'll be okay for later in the series."
Here's McBren: "It is a confidence booster. We knew turning up here that we had an experienced team and we gave ourselves a chance with the ball and it was a superb innings from Martin. The counterattacking from 1 for 2 was pleasing, to have the self-belief to play aggressively.
"Dan Vettori would have played but for injury but Nathan played and put in a great effort, there's still a place for two spinners. We need to give Dan a couple of days to see how his injury is."
The Man of the Match is, of course, Martin Guptill for his superb century, just the second man after Mark Greatbach (who made two tons in 1990) to make an ODI century for New Zealand in England. A fabulous effort, well played sir.
For England it was a pretty stinking day. They turned up in a dreadful new cheap-looking kit with contrasting caps, lost an important toss, played a series of loose strokes and were always chasing the game. Their batting was simply not good enough and their total was a good 40 runs short of par, especially given their bowling attack was shorn of Steven Finn - lethal in the ODIs in New Zealand - and Stuart Broad. Their replacements, Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes, were pretty ordinary.
What a great innings from Martin Guptill. The New Zealand bowlers had given them a chance for a morale-boosting win and Guptill has led the line wonderfully well and New Zealand have won by five wickets. I mentioned a couple of solid stands was all it would take to break the back of this chase and they got that, recovering from 1 for 2 with a stand of 119 between Guptill and Ross Taylor, who counterattacked with his usual flowing strokeplay. Grant Elliot and James Franklin ensured there would be no slip up and New Zealand have now won three times in ODIs at Lord's.
solidly blocked coming forward on off stump
length ball outside off, Guptill pushes at it and misses, it runs through the legs of Buttler and nearly hits the helmet - which would have ended the game - scores now tied
angled in, appeal for lbw, was this pad first? Not out given by Aleem Dar but England review but I reckon it's bat first and too high. Guptill just squeezed it onto the front pad as it tailed in a little. Indeed it stays not out
length ball just outside off, punched to cover with a bent front knee
So Franklin sees out the over and now Guptill on 99, one run to become the second man to score an ODI hundred for New Zealand in England...Tim Bresnan returns...
forward press on off stump to cover
good length ball angled across Franklin who shoulders arms
forward press on off stump to mid-off
Five wides wins the game...
played forward, blocked carefully around off stump, that would do for Guptill
full ball wide of off stump, dug out into the covers
Just don't hit a six now James...
length down the leg side, tucked down to long leg, goes to 99
Woakes now comes back with six to win, Guptill needs two of them for a hundred, breathing heavily...
slower ball, slogged down the ground, it's gone higher than it has farther and a diving Woakes back from mid-on just fails to take the catch, it went a long, long way up but Guptill survives
tighter line and pushed to mid-on who comes in and throws down the stumps but Franklin is home very easily
length a foot outside off, Franklin stayed back and tried to guide it down to third man, ended up getting a bottom edge to the keeper on the bounce
back of a length, defended going back and across
bumper and called wide, ballooned over the batsman's head
another ball in the slot to drive, only finds cover
length wide of off stump, swung away wide of third man for a couple
Guptill's innings the real difference between the sides, no-one went on for England and hence they ended up maybe 40 or 50 short...
full length again, dug out to backward point
flatter ball, met on the full around middle stump, clipped to midwicket
