Bell closes out the match with a catch in the covers, Southee leaning back and chipping up right to the fielder
England vs New Zealand, 1st ODI at Chester-le-Street, Jun 15 2008 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Well, that's just smashing - for England, crushing New Zealand by 114 runs in the opening match of this five ODI series at Chester-le-Street. It was a tale of two contrasting teams today - and of Pietersen's extraordinary shots in his first one-day ton in England.
It's not surprising to hear that Pietersen has been named Man of the Match. Paul Collingwood says there isn't much England could have done better today, while Daniel Vettori admits New Zealand were poor. The contrasting emotions.
Well, thanks for joining us today, do come back for the next match on Wednesday from Edgbaston. From Andrew McGlashan and Jenny Roesler it's goodbye.
a good shot there from Southee, lifts it from outside off and times it all the way over backward square, the ball going fairly flat
outside off, a vain swish away from the body, the ball moving wide off the seam
short ball on the legs, Southee looks to pull it but the ball rushes on to him
There's a wall with some writing on it, just next to the large madam who is getting ready to sing
"He had to get that Wright," notes one of our colleagues, sagely
backs away and goes for the pull, hits it up a lot higher than he wanted, Wright running hard from midwicket and catches it over his head, excellent catch, particularly with plenty of fielders rushing round near him
backs away again, pushed into the covers, they chase the single through
outside the leg stump, the batsman steps back and lets it go through
defended on the front foot
the batsman gives himself some room to step back and lift this high and straight, just wide of the oncoming Shah who is right next to it when it leaps over the rope
outside off, cut off the back foot into the covers
some width outside off, tempts the batsman into a cut off the back foot that he doesn't get quite right
Broad back into the attack now
slower ball, the batsman comes out and pushes down the track
defended back down the track on the front foot
banged in short, but this time it's ruled wide as it creeps to leg
bangs it in short, it hardly gets up off the turf, Collingwood kicks the ball at the stumps but misses by a fair way, everyone finding it hysterical
down on one knee, shouts of "Catch it!" and Collingwood has two wickets in three balls, Vettori picking out Anderson in the deep with his pull
short ball on the legs, swept round to fine leg
Mills to the crease now
Some doughty batting from Hopkins although New Zealand have been batting with an air of resignation to this innings of late
width outside off, cut to point and that's held by Bopara on his knees at backward point
pushed forward, they look for the run, decide not to take it and England decide to "Hold it, hold it"
width outside off and again some turn in, worked with the spin, moving it out to midwicket
