and that was it, Faf du Plessis wins his first match as South Africa captain with a crisp drive that beats point and is too far from third man to stop the two that SA need
South Africa vs New Zealand, 1st T20I at Durban, Dec 21 2012 - Ball by Ball Commentary
South Africa won by 8 wickets (with 47 balls remaining)
That is it for this game. Read Andrew McGlashan's match report on your way out. Abhishek Purohit signing off. Good night.
Rory Kleinveldt is the Man of the Match. Kleinveldt: "It's not going to get any worse after the first Test. It has just been a lot of hard work in the nets. Wicket today was a bit up and down, not as good as the wickets in Austrlia. Am always keen to use my bouncer, as a dot ball or a wicket-taking option. Different conditions in East London, will be a bit slower than it was here."
Faf du Plessis: "No complaints, fantastic game, very happy. I enjoyed thinking on the field, the game was going at more than a million miles an hour. The bowling was fantastic, the energy on the field was awesome, cannot ask anything more of the guys."
Brendon McCullum: "We played some aggressive cricket and missed a couple of fundamentals on the way. South Africa exposed us, That is how we are going to be, that is the way we are going to put them under pressure, by playing aggressive. You have got to earn the right to be aggressive. we were probably a bit too keen, we were outplayed. We will be up for it, and hopefully have a much improved performance."
New Zealand have been comprehensively Kleined and Faffed tonight. One can only hope that this being the first match of the tour has something to do with their refusal to play to the conditions when they batted. There was just too much bounce for the pull to come off consistently from a good length, and for New Zealand to keep playing stroke after reckless stroke like they did
BJ speaks the truth, forget the predictions: "This isn't the end of the world for us NZ supporters. This is merely just another day on this long bumpy road that heads in the wrong direction far more often than the right one. Mayans didn't have to predict it, its just the way it is..."
Henrik: "Can understand why CSA opted for 3 x T20 instead of Boxing Day test - this way there's a guarantee of three days of cricket... ...of sorts."
Mark: "For NZ fans, the Allman Brothers Band sums it up best: "Sometimes I feel, like I've been tied to the whipping post, Good Lord I feel like I'm dying". Pathetic effort. Not keen for any more early get ups to follow this rubbish."
down to long on for a single
false stroke now through midwicket
intentionally cut in the air over backward point and short third man, top placement
lovely stroke, de Kock has played a few, strides forward and lofts powerfully over extra cover, a bounce before it goes over the ropes
whipped to deep square leg
nudged to short fine leg
ntveem: "This is not cricket. Whatever it is, this is not cricket. Please give me my cricket back! Signed, the 90s." Those were the days ...
whipped off the pads, and it almost beats the man running across from deep square leg, parries it away almost off the ropes
down the track, it is fired in full, Faf recovers to work it through midwicket
he has repeatedly kept going for the cut, this time he under-edges it, but it was too low for McCullum, he can't get down to it, chance anyway
through the covers for another four, flighted outside off, Faf to the pitch and gracefully putting it away
nudged with the turn in front of square leg
off the front foot, back to the bowler again
pushed back to the bowler
into the pads, and eased through midwicket
makes some room but cannot place it past the off side infield
Adam: "Maybe this is what the Mayans predicted? Feels like the end of the world for a NZ supporter!" But surely not for the first time?
punched down to long on with the spin
more impatience, backs away to leg but Hira follows him and he finds no timing at all on the swing
