All over for Pakistan; Shahzad flirts with a wide one and departs! Serious pace and bounce draws an edge that rockets to Warner in the slip who makes no mistake as Australia complete a domineering 360-run win over Pakistan
Australia vs Pakistan, 1st Test at Perth, AUS v PAK, Dec 14 2023 - Match Result
5.00pm Right, that just about wraps things up for the first Test of the Australian summer. An all-powerful display from the home side to win by 360 runs. They'll be a full wrap of today's action here shortly with more reaction to come. Can Pakistan bounce back on Boxing Day in Melbourne? We'll be back to bring you all the action from that, but there's plenty more cricket next week with the BBL resuming meanwile, right now, South Africa are facing India. For now, from Gnasher and Rvel, it's goodbye and thanks for joining us.
4.50pm Time for the presentations...
Mitch Marsh is player of the match. "It's been amazing. My first Test at Perth Stadium, and first in Perth for six years. Thanks to everyone for getting around me. When you go out with a biggish lead it takes the pressure off a little, but the wicket was really tricky. We knew our bowlers would be a handful. Bowling hurts way too much, so I'll take the runs. Nice to contribute with the ball. To get one in the right area to Babar, he's a class player, was nice."
Shan Masood "When you come to these shores you look for progress...if you said Australia would play 110 overs, and us 100, I'd take that. We could have batted a bit quicker, missed on 60-70 runs. Bowling-wise thought we did a lot of good things. Not as disciplined as we wanted to be, that's the lesson from the Australian attack. A lot of positive things to take forward. It's never easy when you play two debutants but thought they were very mature. They bowled really well, on another day could gave got more wickets."
Pat Cummins "Great start to the summer, everything fell into place. We've played a lot of cricket, so the build-up was very chilled and relaxed. No hiccups this week, it's all gone to plan. That was huge [from Warner], his and Uzzie's partnership really set the game up for us. [Mitch] is one of the favourites of the west, so pumped to see him do well. Five hundred Test wickets, over decade, all conditions, he just finds a way. He's been stewing on it for six months with his injury."
4.45pm "I still pinch myself when I see my name next to those guys," Nathan Lyon says of reaching 500. "Bit of a trademark, the left hander, sliding on and hitting the pad. Lucky enough it was three reds."
4.40pm Thanks Rvel, well that all finished in a rush. Felt inevitable from the moment Starc struck in his first over.
4.30pm:Handshakes and hugs all around. Mitchell Marsh receives applause from the home crowd; he hogged the limelight with a superb all-round performance and played a key role in Australia's first win of the summer. Pakistan showed some fight with the bat in the first innings but probably conceded far too many runs and were always on the backfoot. 450 proved a mountain to climb in trying conditions with variable bounce. Lots to ponder and rectify for Pakistan team before Boxing Day Test. The two debutants did well and acclimatised rather quickly to the conditions but expecting them to win you matches straightaway at the highest level is a tough ask. Perhaps that is one of the main issues - Pakistan consistently hands out debuts on all-important tours to Australia, but they have struggled to build a stable Test team over the last few years. This is in stark contrast to Australia, who have their house in complete order. Khurram Shahzad was superb in the second innings, while Aamer Jamal picked a brilliant fifer, bowling his heart out and reaping rewards for his sheer hard work. It's a fabulous story of how he came up the ranks and made it to Pakistan's Test team but right now, it's Lyon's moment. The spotlight is on one of the greatest spinners of this era, who has joined the select group of bowlers with 500 Test wickets! Lyon has picked up 23 five-wicket hauls in his illustrious career. I'll hand the reins over to Gnasher for match presentation. Stay tuned
Traps him lbw! Shorter and held its line on middle, looks pretty adjacent and he was pegged back, ball nipping in and tenderises his front pad; they all appeal in unison; the umpire is on the same page. Pitching outside off, impact in line and wickets hitting. Good fight shown by Shakeel but not enough to get through the day
lunging at it and dinks it away towards backward point
tossed up fuller on this occasion around middle and leg, flicks it away using his fluid wrists towards square leg
tossed up on a length, pitches outside leg en route to middle, blocked well
lobbed up on a length, quicker on this occasion, and rises steeply from round about same length, dabbed away towards third man
looped up on a length, turning away outside off, lets it go
Tossed up on a slightly shorter length with some drift towards middle and leg, eases while playing with the spin towards short leg
slightly shorter on middle, tucked to short midwicket and makes the right call in the end to deny the run, fielder charged in quickly from the deep
short of a length delivery, steepling bounce on middle and off, defended while camped deep in his crease
throws the kitchen sink at it, advances down and goes for a wild hoick on the leg side but nowhere near the ball
short ball outside off, moves his bonce away from the line of the ball
back of a length slammed into the pitch and rises steeply, throws his bat at it and it pops up in the air, lands in the peninsula between cover and deep point
short of a length, zinging it back from outside off, neatly defended into the covers
lobbed up from round the wicket on a full-length around leg stump line, tracks the path and parries it away from short leg
Lyon bamboozles Jamal with a length delivery and the ball didn't rise at all! feel sorry for Jamal here, that completely died on the turf and raises questions about this pitch.
lobbed up, nice straight lines, lunges forward to defend it towards point
good grief, that missed everything! tossed up on a length and spun back prodigiously, just goes over the middle and dribbles away to the boundary
over the wicket, length ball spinning towards middle and leg, defended with the spin towards short leg
Nasir Hussain : "Pakistan's medical team and technical staff should answer why the pace of Shaheen has dropped from 150kph to 130kph?I hope Naseem Shah doesn't lose his pace once he comes back. If he isn't fully fit,why he is even playing test matches?"
A prolonged passionate appeal from the players and the crowd! Took the review in the dying moments of the timer. Let's take a look. He leans forward to defend this ball that spins a touch from middle, impact is in line, pitching in line and hitting leg stump so the umpire will have to change his decision. That's 500 Take a bow for the maestro! Lyon has been a rock in this Australian lineup, tormenting many batting line-ups with his spin-bowling mastery. He richly deserves this milestone - a perfect model of consistency and he etches his name in the record books. Hats off to you, Lyon!
