and there it is, Sangakkara swings a full ball off his pads out to deep midwicket to seal the series, Sri Lanka's first success over Pakistan in ODIs at home
Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI at Dambulla, Aug 03 2009 - Ball by Ball Commentary
So, a pretty easy win for the hosts. After Pakistan's innings, previously the highest total in Dambulla, you really felt they had a chance but some poor field placing, average fielding and indifferent bowling cost them. Jayawardene and Tharanga flattened Pakistan with a double-century opening stand and though a wobble followed it was not really going to worry Sri Lanka. Sangakkara stayed on to hit the winning runs and he is all smiles as he leaves the field. In his first term as captain he has led Sri Lanka to Test and ODI wins. Good stuff from Sri Lanka. Pakistan looked clueless at times trying to defend 288. They have had a proud record in Sri Lanka over the years but have now been beaten in Tests and ODIs by the home side. Still two matches to go but you can call them meaningless now.
Stick around for the post-match fun.
First up is the losing captain, Younis Khan. Its been a hard tour for him after the success at the ICC World Twenty20. He says the openers knocked Pakistan out of the game. He admits Pakistan's fielding wasn't too hot. So he knows what went wrong. He smiles again when asked by Ramiz Raja if he'd like to win at least one game on this tour.
Next up is Sangakkara, the winning captain. He looks relieved. Says it was a great game. Credits everyone. Has few words to describe a 202-run opening stand. Salutes Jayawardene's "amazing" innings. Satisfied with the series win and how Sri Lanka have shaped up.
Few surprises that Jayawardene is the Man of the Match.
Thanks for tuning in, folks. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Until next time, take care!
The Sri Lankan team is on their feet ...
short bouncer way down the leg stump, Sangakkara hooks and misses and the errant delivery even beats Kamran
back of a length on middle and off, Kapugedera punches the ball off the back foot to mid-off and sets off and has to put in a proper dive to make his crease
Seven needed. Three overs in hand.
floats it up just outside off and again he drives through cover
flatter ball, still no turn, tucked toward mid-on for a single
this one spits and rips down the pads to Razzaq at short fine leg
tosses it up and Kapugedera drives off the front foot, no power at all but he threads the gap at cover with superb timing and placement
A slip comes on.
sweeps again to a wider one, this time for a single
tossed up just around middle and leg stump and Sangakkara just sweeps it over square leg for four
With just five overs to go Sri Lanka have to take the batting Powerplay. Younis calls on Ajmal.
That was a very good over from young Aamer. Smart kid. A wicket-maiden over.
and again, pitches it up and again the batsman leaves
even fuller this time and he drives loosely and misses
a bit fuller yet still in that channel that angles across in an attempt to induce a nick but now Kapugedera shoulders arms
similar ball and this time Kapugedera has a flirt and misses
shorter in length, angles across nicely and he leaves
That shot wasn't really required. Sri Lanka lose their fourth. Here's Kapugedera.
timber! Aamer pitches it fuller and straighter, Kandamby swings across the line, misses, and the ball pegs back the off stump
Sri Lanka need 21 from 36 balls.
full and slower on the pads, nudged past midwicket
similar stuff, gets back and dabs the wide ball to gully
floated up even wider, no shot offered because thats a wide
again too wide so Kandamby cuts and the ball goes straight through backward point, the fielding has been pretty shoddy today from Pakistan
fuller in length to commit Kandamby forward in defence
