gets down the track before the spin away from him means he is forced to edge it away behind square. The gully sees this quickly as he runs across to pickup and fire in a throw as Sangakkara is able to remove the stump before the batsman made the striker's end
New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 7th ODI at Wellington, Jan 29 2015 - Ball by Ball Commentary
10.10pm Brendon McCullum is given the ODI series trophy by the NZC president as the rest of the players filter into position for the paparazzi. Watch out for this team in just a few weeks time as they look good to go quite deep into the tournament once it kicks off on Feb 14. But there is still plenty of cricket left in between, with two more ODIs here in New Zealand to look forward to as the Pakistan tour kicks off on January 31 here in Wellington. Till then though, this is Rohan Sharma signing off for ESPNcricinfo. Ciao!
Lahiru Thirmanne, Sri Lanka captain: Thought Kumar and Dilshan played really well today. They have been brilliant throughout the series. Our main concern was our death bowling and today it came off good. I thought today all the bowlers bowled really well.
Kane Williamson, New Zealand captain: We want to win every game we play, but SL played so well today, on the back of Sanga's hundred and Dilshan's knock. They bowled very well tonight and swung it late, so they made it very difficult for us. It is important for us to be right in at the end with the bat though. Our middle to lower order all had good time in the middle. We kept pushing the game forward, but unfortauntely we were unable to get over the line, but in the field we were very good. There are a lot of things to take from the surface. It does have a bit of dew that comes in later so we will have to consider that going into the World Cup. SL have put us under pressure at times, and am pleased with how the boys have gone too.
Kumar Sangakkara, Man of the Match: It's been a good year. The entire team has been working very hard. The hard work has paid off with some good performances out in the middle. The guys are disappointed for not winning the series, but we are pleased with how we have come out in the end. It is great being part of a team that pushes each player to be slightly better every day, or every tour. I just try to do the basics as well as I can, and if you take some of the performances from right through the series, you can see everyone has chipped in so it has been satisfying. The wickets have been fantastic. The Black Caps have played outstandingly during the Tests and ODIs. There is a lot we can learn from them, but we also are proud of our cricket and how we do in big tournaments. Good to have Lasith back in the fold. We just want to take a week here to get our minds fresh before the World Cup begins.
The Man of the Match is Kumar Sangakkara for his 113.
10.00pm Presentation has just begun. Some words from the NZC dignitaries and sponsors for both teams as they look to the World Cup now.
We will be back shortly for quotes from the match presentation
9.50pm Sri Lanka manage to get away with a consolation victory in this final match of the ODI series as they make the result 4-2 in favour of New Zealand as we come to a close. Sri Lanka manage to hold on to a 34-run victory, which was shaped largely by the discipline showed by the new-ball bowlers, while the middle overs were well controlled by the tourists as well. Chameera was impressive on debut, while Sangakkara proved again what a class act he is with a 21st ODI century to his name.
drifts one in from outside off which is steered away through deep midwicket
36 off 30 now. Mills is the man for NZ. Prasanna back on to see what he can do as they look to take pace off the ball here in the dying stages
Nirmal: "whatever the match result may be, Mills playing sensibly"
122 kph, all welcome boundaries here as McClenaghan gets away a chop-on past the keeper to get four through the fine leg region
124 kph, ends up striking this back of a length back at the bowler, who is able to cut it off after misfielding initally
125 kph, close to getting it into the blockhole as Mills mistimes this drive down to long on
41 off 33 now. A tough ask given the situation..
125 kph, looks like he may have just slammed this straight down long off's throat, but gets this more straighter to find the boundary
123 kph, fuller one which is chipped over long off by Mills as he is able to come back for two once more
120 kph, looking to land another yorker but gets it wrong as Mills just bludgeons this full toss over long-off, but not well enough to beat the boundary rider on the rope
Kula back on now to try and finish it off
Sammy H: "Charging down the wicket is surely a no-no for a tail end batsmen when you know if you miss the ball it's game over."
worked away off the back foot down to long on to finish the over
guided down to the fielder at long off as they are able to complete a brace
able to successfully dig out this flighted one on middle
SD: "Don't call the match off until Mills is dismissed. Well, I mean, of course, right? But the guy can hit some seriously big ones, and can pull off seemingly improbable chases. Mitch is a worry though. Can he bat?"
able to ease one away through long on as they complete a single
gets forward before striking this firmly at mid-off
able to fend away this delivery arriving on leg, as the ball is hit away to the off side
Sammy H: "Southee has just blown this for New Zealand. Mills had the right idea pushing for 1's and 2's. The run rate wasn't very high. Silly shots from New Zealand have lost us this game. A worry that we don't seem to have the mental strength to win games the hard way."
132 kph, gives up a loose delivery which just sits up for Mills outside his off stump as he carves this away ferociously to find the extra-cover rope
131 kph, Mills getting in some batting practice before the World Cup as he waits on this short ball about chest height before dispatching it about 30 rows back over fine leg
The final batsman for New Zealand is Mitchell McClenaghan
130 kph, and the ninth wicket falls as Southee perishes with a miscued, top-edge which flies high over to Sangakkara as he went for the pull, but the bat rotated in his hands to offer up this straightforward chance. NZ now staring down the barrel as SL look to wrap it up here in Wellington
Yash: "Did the Sri Lankans really sledge Vettori? Even Mcclenaghan, the most aggressive of the NZ sledgers didn't say anything to any of big 3 (or any sri Lankan for that matter) and here we see them giving words to a member of team (and that's Daniel Vettori too!) who has just won 2-0 and 4-1. Not impressed. "
131 kph, goes over the wicket now as this time Mills is able to blast away off the back foot to deep cover
133 kph, full and on middle as this is drilled straight to the boundary rider at deep extra-cover
132 kph, full delivery going across Southee as this is driven on the full to long off
Time for Perera to have a bowl. Going round the wicket
