full toss, clubbed over square leg, fifty and victory! Comprehensive from Livingstone, and Phoenix, they bossed that from start to finish, via a mid-match fightback
Rockets vs Phoenix, 15th Match at Birmingham, Men's Hundred, Aug 15 2022 - Match Result
Phoenix won by 7 wickets (with 14 balls remaining)
Lewis Gregory and Daniel Sams's 92-run partnership is TR-M's highest for the 7th wicket in T20s, breaking the record of 29 between Lewis Gregory and Rashid Khan
Moeen Ali and Livingstone's 85-run partnership is BP-M's highest for the 3rd wicket in T20s, breaking the record of 80 between Livingstone and Will Smeed
9.19pm Right, that's a wrap. Phoenix draw level with the vanquished Rockets on six points, two adrift of the high-flying London Spirit. From Miller, Gardner and Thilak, good night! Let's do this all again tomorrow.
Liam Livingstone: "We knew it would be hard to defend a total but shows the value of taking wickets up front, nice to get over the line. We've both got confidence in our hitting ability, so we backed ourselves to play strong shots. That Lewis Gregory over was the turning point. In a pressure situation it's a big thing for Mo to stand there and say I'll take it on. I found seam tough to hit, Mo found it easy to hit. I missed two or three in my wheelhouse, nice to spend some time at the crease, nice to get my rhythm back. But we won the game in the first 20-25 balls, getting Hales and Mala."
Moeen Ali, the Cazoo Match Hero: "It felt horrible and ugly, but entertaining from myself. The match was set up by the bowlers, for sure. The wicket felt like timing was difficult, so we decided to slog a few and see how we'd go. They got a score but we've got some good players, a small boundary on one side. We're doing the basics quite well. Nice to win, unbeaten at home so not an easy place to come and play."
9.08pm So, victory with oodles to spare. Two mighty fifties from the Phoenix kingpins, Moeen and Livingstone. Kudos to Daniel Sams, a star for Rockets with bat and ball, and to Luke Wood, who was exceptional with the ball to give his side hope. But after collapsing to Benny Howell's allsorts, not even a spirited 92-run stand from Sams and Gregory could rescue their hopes.
smashed to the off side, could be a run-out if the shy is true... but it isn't
high, high, high in the air, and dropped! Gregory can't judge it out of the floodlights, ends up groping with his hands in front of the body, and they run two!
looking to finish it in style, but hit on the pad as he aims to leg
moshed down the ground! Power and levers, clean out of the arc as Sams over-pitched, solid base and dismissed for an 85 metre straight six
pace off again, pushed across the right-hander, who swishes with flat feet
pace off, but in the arc as Livingstone waits on his stroke and thumps on the bounce to deep midwicket
Livingstone plays it like a free hit all the same, a swat across the line, doesn't pick the back-of-the-hander, and plugs in the leg side
slow bouncer, loops over Livingstone's stance, out of reach and given as a no-ball, but no free hit
knee-high full toss, straight enough to cramp Wade's pull to the leg side
thumped out of the full length, to the on-side
SB: "England have so many good left arm pacers-Curran, Topley, Willey, David Payne and now Luke Wood" He was mightily impressive today
pace off, mistimed pull to square leg
sweet straight-lined biff through long-off! That's what Wade can do, presents the full face through the length ball and rockets back-to-back boundaries
cramped on the pull, but nailed over square leg! So nearly into the hands of the boundary rider, but enough pace to elude his outstretched hand
fizzed through the bouncer, good change-up, can't connect on the pull
Dezz: "Smeeds century was epic, particularly with it being the first ever... however the boundaries here seem a lot smaller than the ones Jacks was clearing (not that it matters when you hit out of the stadium)." I can't vouch for the boundaries during that last innings, but this pitch seems to be on the edge of the square today
slower bouncer, on the back foot, deflected to the leg side but can't get back for the second
on the back foot, over the wicket, wide outside off and pushed to deep cover
Well, that's given Rockets something to cling to. But they need wickets urgently to save this one
back of a length, slower ball, dabbed down to deep third
round-house pull to deep midwicket
banged in short, but gets up too much for the umpire's liking
