It was the first ever Test match between these two sides. Australia became seventh team to play against all other Test playing nations.Now only WestIndies and Zimbabwe have not played against all other 8 Test playing nations.Interestingly these two have not appeared against each other.

It was the 597th Test for Australia and 34th for Zimbabwe.

Umpires George Sharp and Ian Robinson were umpiring in their 10th and 20th Test respectively.

Trevor Gripper was making his debut.He became 41st Zimbabwean to play Test cricket.Gripper's second innings' effort (60) is the fourth highest score by a Zimbabwean batsman on debut after Dave Houghton's 121 v India at Harare in 1992-93, Grant Flower's 82 also v India at Harare in 1992-93 and Murray Goodwin's 70 v SriLanka at Kandy in 1997-98. Gripper became seventh Zimbabwean to score a fifty on debut. Apart from these four other to do so are: Andy Flower (59,v India,Harare,1992-93),Gavin Rennie (57,v New- Zealand,Harare,1997-98) and Andy Waller (50,v England,Bulawayo, 1996-97).

Steve Waugh scored his 20th hundred in his th Test. He became 6th Australian after Don Bradman (29),Allan Border (27),Greg Chappel EC (24), Neil Harvey (21) and David Boon (21) and 17th batsman to do so (India's Sachin Tendulkar became 16th batsman to do so three days back).

Waugh's innings is the fourth highest by a batsman on his first appearance against Zimbabwe after India's Vinod Kambli's 227 at Delhi in 1992-93,SriLanka's Marvan Atapattu's 223 at Kandy in 1997-98 and Pakistan's Mohammad Wasim's 192 at Harare in 1997-98.Overall it was 13th instance of a batsman scoring a hundred oh his first appearance against Zimbabwe.

Steve Waugh's innings is the highest by any batsman at batting position 5 against Zimbabwe obliterating Pakistan's Yousuf Youhana's 120 at Lahore in 1998-99.

Steve Waugh's innings is the fifth highest by any batsman against Zimbabwe and second highest by a captain after Pakistan's Wasim Akram's 257 at Sheikhupura in 1996-97.

Damien Fleming's innings (65) is the third highest by any batsman against Zimbabwe at batting position 9 after NewZealand's Daniel Vettori's 90 at Bulawayo in 1997-98 and Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq's 79 at Sheikhupura in 1996-97. However it was the highest at this position by batsman playing his first Test against Zimbabwe.

The 114 run partnership between Steve Waugh and Damien Fleming is the second highest for eighth wicket against Zimbabwe after the world record 313 run stand between Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq for Pakistan at Sheikhupura in 1996-97.

Mark Waugh by holding five catches in the match equalled the tally of five other fieldsmen (Inzamam-ul-Haq, Pubuddu Dassanayake, Roshan Mahanama, Chris Harris and Robin Singh)'s record of five catches in a match against Zimbabwe. However record is on the name of NewZealand's Stephen Fleming who held seven catches against Zimbabwe at Harare in 1997-98.

Heath Streak captured five wickets in an innings for the fourth time in his career-most by a Zimbabwean. He was earlier at level with Paul Strang with three five wicket hauls.

Mark Waugh on 78, surpassed Neil Harvey's tally of 6149 runs (@ 48.41 in 79 matches) to become the seventh leading scorer for Australia.Mark Waugh, at the end of this match has scored 6161 runs in 94 matches.

Mark Waugh became a victim of nervous nineties for second time in his career.The previous such occasion for him was against England at Lord's in 1993 when he was out on 99.

Murray Goodwin followed his first ball duck in first innings with 90 in the second.He became second Zimbabwean after Grant Flower (96 & 0,v India, Delhi, 1992-93) to score duck and ninety in the same match.
