It was a bridge too far, as Hampshire chased an unlikely 413 to win in the fourth innings of their Frizzell County Championship match against league leaders Worcestershire at the Rose Bowl, despite a brave 88 from skipper John Crawley.
Resuming at 91 for 2, Derek Kenway was first to fall as he edged Matt Mason to the wicket-keeper after batting for just over 2 hours for a patient 44.
Lawrence Prittipaul then joined John Crawley in a brisk partership of 92 before Pipe again snapped up the youngster off Kabir Ali.
Nic Pothas one of Hampshire's most persistant batters this season fell to slip, and the end was in site when Crawley who had driven Batty for successive fours in the over drove over the ball to be comprehensively bowled.
Mascarenhas fell in the next over leaving the ball that found his off stump. Shaun Udal and Chaminda Vaas hit an entertaining 50 stand, but Udal's demise to Batty, brought about a quick end.
Tremlett was stumped then Batty completed a four wicket haul having Tomlinson caught in the slips.
So an end to Hampshire's championship campaign at the Rose Bowl in 2003, just one match remains for them to avoid the wooden spoon when they vist Derbyshire on the 17th September.
