Barbados: Captain Steadies Police Ship
by Philip Hackett
Police 250 v Banks
An enterprising seventh wicket stand of 76 in 62 minutes checked
Police's stuttering progress and inspired them to a solid
first-innings score on a tricky pitch yesterday.
Off-spinner David Sealy took six for 105 but the work of Leslie
Reifer and Alvin Campbell gave Police the advantage by the end
of the day.
Coming together shortly after tea with Police on 109 for six,
captain Leslie Reifer and Alvin Campbell counter attacked
effectively to lift the Division 1 leaders from uncertainty to a
position of strength.
Reifer belted three sixes, all off left-arm spinner Winston Reid
in consecutive deliveries, and three fours in a spirited knock
of 44. All three sixes came from straight hits into the Wildey
Main Road. Reifer batted for 90 minutes and faced 69 balls in
his rescue effort.
Campbell maintained the tempo after Reifer was brilliantly
caught by Adrian Watson, running around on the long-on boundary
off off-spinner David Sealy.
The hard working allrounder batted 97 minutes and faced 63 balls
for his topscore of 59 which included six fours. He reached his
half century in 70 minutes off just 55 balls.
Sylvester Louis joined the "six hit" club with a straight six
off Sealy but it was left to Duane Davis to lead the lower-order
rally with a breezy unbeaten 39 from only 34 balls. Davis
clobbered three sixes and two fours during his 36 minutes at the
crease.
Banks missed five chances during the innings.
Earlier, Stanton Proverbs' gritty innings of 27 took him to 408
runs for the season. Reid's three for 69 lifted his tally of
wickets to 51.
