BCCI selection committee set for major revamp

India's senior selection committee is likely to undergo a major revamp during next week's annual general meeting of the BCCI. At least three, if not four, of the five national selectors are set to be replaced less than four months before the start of the World Twenty20, to be played in India.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Saba Karim (East), Rajinder Singh Hans (Central) and Roger Binny (South) will not be reappointed for what would have been their last year as a selector. The fate of chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil (West) is also not certain.

The quartet, along with Vikram Rathour (North), were appointed as selectors on October 2012. Karim and Hans were fortunate to have survived another term since the AGM was delayed last year. With a five-month delay in the annual cycle, the new BCCI dispensation decided not to tinker with the set combination for the remaining term.

The BCCI rules prescribe that no individual can be a selector for more than four years, and the AGM appoints the selection committee every year. A senior selector at present is paid Rs 7 million annually.

Even though the AGM is delayed by more than a month this year as well, it is understood that the BCCI hierarchy is convinced about bringing in new faces into the selection panel. Despite Binny being a World Cup winner, the fact that his son, Stuart, is a regular in India's squad is likely to go against him, with the board president Shashank Manohar aiming to crack the whip on conflict-of-interest issues. Even though Roger Binny has been abstaining from discussion or voting whenever his son's selection is discussed over the last three years, it is unlikely that he will be offered an extension.

Patil's fate will depend on whether the BCCI hierarchy wants to reinstate Mohinder Amarnath into the selection panel. Amaranth was inducted into the committee in 2010-11 and was tipped to take over as chief selector in the following year. But following a range of disputes, most prominently over MS Dhoni's captaincy with then BCCI office-bearers, he was ousted from the panel after a year.

It is understood that some of the BCCI officials are pushing for Amarnath's case. If he is to be brought back, logically his replacement from the north zone Rathour will have to make way for him. However, with Rathour's proximity to BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, it is unlikely that he will face the axe.

In such a scenario, since Amarnath had also played for Baroda towards the end of his first-class career, the BCCI can nominate him from the west zone at the expense of Patil.

For the other three vacancies, the candidates that are being considered include Deep Dasgupta and Devang Gandhi (East), Gyandendra Pandey and Pritam Gandhe (Central), and Venkatesh Prasad and WV Raman (South).
