Canada v New Zealand

At Benoni, March 3, 2003

15-Apr-2004
At Benoni, March 3, 2003. New Zealand won by five wickets. Toss: New Zealand. One-day international debut: A. M. Samad.
New Zealand did not know it at the time, but victory by any margin would prove enough to take them through to the next phase. South Africa's fatal Duckworth/Lewis blunder was still several hours away, so New Zealand approached the match in the belief that their best hope was to win as quickly as possible and squeeze through on net run-rate. Not for the first time in the competition, however, Davison was in the mood to ruin reputations. While his team-mates struggled against the pace of Bond and the accuracy of Oram, Davison blasted 75 in 62 balls, including nine fours and four sixes, three pulled high over mid-wicket in one Oram over. New Zealand set themselves the target of winning in just 16 overs, but lost three cheap wickets to Davison, opening the bowling with his off-breaks, and were in trouble at 114 for five in the 14th over. Styris and Harris, however, kept their heads to share a match-winning partnership of 83 in just 58 balls, and New Zealand were home, seven overs behind their self-imposed schedule.
Man of the Match: J. M. Davison. Attendance: 5,114.
