England name ODI Squad for NatWest Series

England today named a 14-man squad for the forthcoming NatWest Series of One-Day Internationals against West Indies and Zimbabwe

England today named a 14-man squad for the forthcoming NatWest Series of One-Day Internationals against West Indies and Zimbabwe.
Alec Stewart is recalled to the One-Day squad as wicket-keeper with Chris Read stepping down. Graham Thorpe, who missed the winter tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe, is also recalled and the uncapped Nottinghamshire all-rounder Paul Franks is included in a senior squad for the first time.
Announcing the squad, the Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney said: "While we have sought to keep one eye on the next World Cup in picking this squad, our immediate priority is to do well in the NatWest Series.
"Alec Stewart has been in prime form this season and his selection will help strengthen our batting and ensure continuity in the wicket-keeping position when the Test series resumes against the West Indies.
"Chris Read has a bright future and did nothing wrong in the winter, but he has had an indifferent start to the summer and we feel it can be counter-productive to put younger players in the team if they are not in good form.
"With regard to our batting, we need an experienced player in the middle order who can either take advantage of a good start or rebuild in the middle of an innings and Graham Thorpe is ideally suited to this role.
"We also wanted to include some younger players in order to build for the future. Paul Franks and Vikram Solanki have both been in excellent form this season and we expect them to compete for places in our starting line-up."
