England v Australia 1985

At Lord's, June 3

15-Apr-1986
At Lord's, June 3. England won by eight wickets. Having already won the one-day series, Australia gave Hilditch and Ritchie a game in place of Wessels and Welham. England brought in Foster for Edmonds. Gower did his best day's work for a long time. It began with his winning the toss, and he made his first century for England, at home or abroad, since taking over as their official captain in June 1984. His second-wicket partnership of 202 in 37 overs with Gooch when England went in needing 255 to win, gave his side a comfortable victory on another cloudless day before a capacity crowd. For the first time in eight innings on the Australian tour Border failed to reach 50, Gooch bowling him for 44. but Wood (165 balls, ten 4s, one 6) batted through the innings and towards the end Boon made 45 in 47 balls. Once Gower had overcome an uncertain start, he and Gooch mastered the Australian bowling. Gooch batted 207 minutes, received 164 balls, and hit thirteen 4s and one 6. Gower was in for 159 minutes and 118 balls, hitting fourteen 4s and one 6.
