Facts reveal some work to be done by New Zealand players

Several members of the New Zealand One-Day International side have some work to do in the Zimbabwe series starting tomorrow in Taupo if they are to be regarded as serious contenders for future selections

Selection convener Sir Richard Hadlee has taken some big steps in avoiding the most recent record book, the calendar year averages, in making his, and his panel's choice, for the series.

In the batting Mathew Sinclair has substantial ground to make up, after he was put through the wringer by the Australians last summer. His ODI average is 6.33 while the man he has displaced as an opener Chris Nevin had an average of 22.25, two more even than another preferred batsman Craig McMillan.

More importantly, Nevin had a strike rate of 78.07 compared to 75.20 for McMillan and 41.30 for Sinclair.

Scott Styris has retained his place with an average of 12.30 during the calendar year 2000, but in his favour is his strike rate of 82.00.

Similarly, in the bowling ranks, where Brooke Walker has been preferred ahead of Paul Wiseman. Yet Wiseman's average in 2000 was 25.00, his strike rate 32.0 and his economy rate 4.68.

Walker's average is 57.0, his strike rate 72.0 and his economy rate 4.75.

Styris, Chris Cairns and Nathan Astle each have some work to do with the ball as well. Their respective economy rates for the year 2000 are 5.07, 5.10 and 5.15.

Over the series they must be reduced dramatically for New Zealand to be fully competitive.

But from an overall point of view, New Zealand's cricket statistics for the year 2000 reflect the dominance of Chris Cairns and Roger Twose in the Test and one-day batting respectively.

Cairns' 517 Test runs came at the spectacular average of 64.62 while Mark Richardson's impressive debut year ended with him scoring 425 runs at 47.22.

In One-Day Internationals Twose score 1068 runs in the calendar year at an average of 56.21 and a strike rate of 82.28. Astle was next highest on the list with 845 runs at 38.40 while Cairns managed the best strike rate of all the batsmen at 87.16 from his 523 runs.

What the Test statistics also revealed was a healthy strengthening of bowling stocks. Daniel Vettori's absence has been a blow, a fact reflected in his leading the year averages with 15 wickets at 19.80.

But coming in behind him were, of the bowlers to take more than 10 wickets, Chris Martin with 16 at 22.68, Shayne O'Connor 29 at 23.86, Cairns 21 at 28.57 and Paul Wiseman 18 at 32.50.
