Ghai has been charged with defrauding the KCA of $3.3 million in incidents linked to the LG Trophy, a four-nation tournament held in Nairobi in 1999. The case centres on a contract between the KCA and Media Plus, a company owned and run by Ghai, for the television rights to the event.
Ghai, who is pleading not guilty, was originally charged in June but the case was delayed to allow him time to prepare his defence. Sources in Nairobi suggest that other arrests might follow.
The current KCA board inherited debts of more than $500,000 from the Ghai regime with no meaningful assets. If Ghai is found guilty then the KCA will in all probability look to recover funds from him.
