PERTH - Western Australia's selectors have stuck by their word and recalled
dashing opener Ryan Campbell for this week's Pura Cup match with South
Australia at Adelaide Oval.
But pace star Brad Williams has been sidelined again with a recurrence of a
back injury that forced him to miss WA's drawn Cup opener against Queensland
at the WACA and will be replaced by Gavin Swan.
The Warriors have opted to take a spinner for Adelaide's spin-friendly
wicket, meaning Murray Goodwin's position in the batting line-up will be
filled by Campbell, while Brad Hogg will come into the squad as an extra
bowler.
Goodwin had replaced Campbell in the Warriors' one-day side that defeated
South Australia by three runs on Friday.
Warriors captain Tom Moody said he was omitted because the selectors wanted
him fresh for this week's match after off-season knee surgery.
But the flamboyant opener, who scored a century in last season's one-day
final victory over Queensland, publicly criticised the decision, saying he
did not need rest and would play grade cricket.
However, there was no such response from Goodwin who was left out despite a
match-winning unbeaten 62 Friday night.
"It is frustrating but that's cricket and he (Campbell) is a good player,"
Goodwin said.
"We've got a good batting line-up so you've got to take the good with the
bad.
"I'm just hoping that once I do get in the side, I can consolidate my spot
from there."
Goodwin said immediately after his innings on Friday that he expected to be
replaced for the trip to Adelaide.
"You can't base Ryan on one match, and four-day cricket is so different. It
doesn't have the intensity in the field and I think that was the only
criteria," he said.
"I heard that Ryan was not playing because he wasn't fit. If he was fit, he
would have played.
"So I didn't worry about that. I was just happy to be in the 12 to be
honest. After not playing the four-dayer I was itching for a run."
Goodwin, who turned his back on a flourishing international career with
Zimbabwe to rejoin the Warriors, is expected to be a regular once the
international season starts and makes Adam Gilchrist, Justin Langer and
Damien Martyn unavailable for most games.
