Hampshire announced today that Robin Smith had been re-appointed captain for the fourth year, and that Will Kendall will replace Shaun Udal as vice-captain for the season 2001.
Will Kendall, who was 27 on Monday, has just returned from trekking through the Himalayas with his girl friend Emily. "I must say" commented Kendall, "that it was a wonderful surprise when I returned from my holiday. Shaun did a great job over the past couple of years, setting a standard that will be hard to follow. I look forward to the challenge, and it is a great honour to be vice-captain of Hampshire."
When asked if he thought that this was a stepping stone to becoming club captain in the future, Will stated that he had no thoughts on that, just that he will support Robin 100% and will look forward to the new season with optimism.
Tim Tremlett, Hampshire's Director of Cricket told the Hampshire web-site that this was in no way a reflection on Shaun Udal, who had done a very good job as vice-captain, but Hampshire felt this was the right time for the county to look forward.
Robin Smith, who many felt would relinquish the position due to his bad run of form in 2000 was delighted that the club had retained confidence in him and he hoped 2001 would see a change, not only in his own fortunes but that of the club, as they move to the purpose built ground, The Hampshire Rose Bowl.
