Steve Harmison is set to make a return for England's one-day side in the fourth one-dayer against South Africa at Cape Town on Sunday after struggling with a calf strain. But he admits that he was ready to return home after the second match, owing to homesickness - and only Andrew Flintoff's absence kept him in South Africa.
"If you had offered me the chance to go home on the second I would have gone," Harmison admitted to reporters, "but that is just me and my character. Honestly, I think if Fred had been here I would have gone home."
Flintoff returned home to have surgery on a troublesome bone spur, while Harmison's calf injury kept him out of the first three matches of this seven-game series. But he has recovered as expected - and it is now likely that he will play at Newlands, as England set about restoring their lead. The series is currently 1-1, after South Africa levelled the series with a win at Port Elizabeth on Thursday, and the sides shared a thrilling tie at Blomfontein on Tuesday.
It is expected that the Test hero Matthew Hoggard will give way for Harmison's return, after looking fatigued in the last match. Vikram Solanki's 66 in that game is unlikely to have secured his place, as Michael Vaughan should return in the No 3 spot.
