The 21-year-old East Coast Bays medium-fast bowler, Mike Hendry, may never again have to buy his own refreshments in the clubrooms at Mairangi Bay after his match-winning century against Suburbs New Lynn on Saturday.
Hendry, who has been in the New Zealand Youth side for the past three seasons, came to the wicket with his side in a spot of bother chasing 241. He got stuck into a steady Suburbs attack, taking just 146 balls to reach three figures and beat his previous best score of 98.
With Jayden Moran (50) he added 149 for the fifth wicket and took his side to a much-needed first innings lead of 70.
North Shore was disappointed that it could not hold out the strong Grafton line-up, but given the onslaught mounted by Tane Topia (73) and the steady batting of Shaun Gear (91) it seemed doubtful that any side could have hung on.
Topia scored his first 50 from 36 balls and by the time he was out 60 of his runs had come from boundaries, six of them over the fence.
The 18-year-old North Shore batsman, Gene Andrews, scored his maiden premier century in its second innings of 197.
Grafton headed North Shore by 44 and the game petered out to a draw.
Cornwall conceded a first innings lead of 80 to bottom-placed Takapuna and then offered a generous chase of 205 got there with seven balls to spare after Chris Knight smashed 33 from 20 balls.
Parnell failed to make the most of restricting Howick Pakuranga to 216 and ended its first innings 70 runs short. Howick Pakuranga set Parnell 185 from 34 overs to take maximum points but Sam Whiteman and Kyle Mills were far too accurate and the challenge foundered at 98.
Waitakere City, let off the hook by Ellerslie when it failed to stop a record-breaking tenth wicket partnership of 174, took complete advantage of the situation to win by an innings and 98 runs.
The Waitakere all-rounder, Blair White, added to his growing reputation with match figures of 10-66 to go with his innings of 81 not out. White (4-18) and Kylie Todd (4-18) bowled Ellerslie out for 48 in its second innings.
Eden Roskill battled hard to take first innings points from University Akarana leaving the students well and truly at the bottom of the ladder, but the best battle in the division came in the match between leading sides, Birkenhead City and Papatoetoe. It ended with Papatoetoe falling 55 runs short just before the close.
