Empowering coaches to take a direct hand in planning their country's development is so important and Richard and Joe were able to assist Patrick Leech, the coaches representative on the main FCrI committee, in delivering an ambitious and challenging two day programme specifically designed to help these new GITC coaches become more effective in their delivery at schools and clubs. Issues covered were sections of the new ECB Coach Award `How to Coach' modules, along with Long Term Athlete Development and Net Coaching. The feedback received on the formation of the group focused on greater co-operation between clubs and the comforting fact whilst often isolated coaches were not alone.
Richard was then able to spend the rest a rainy week in Italy continuing to assess and help deliver grassroots initiatives in Rome and Euratom in Ispra, Lombardia. At PGS in Rome he witnessed and assisted the end of an ambitious in school and after school competitive programme which culminated in a fantastic prize-giving where no young player went unrewarded for their efforts.
At Euratom again new ground was broken when Richard delivered in school introductory sessions to children at the local European School and for the first time the local Italian Media School in Ispra. The teachers and children at both schools received the program with great enthusiasm and with further contact planned by Euratom officials it is the hope that this is the beginning of new era in cricket at Euratom. Quite a challenge to other clubs in the Italian federation, one which all the new members of the GITC are hopefully better equipped to take on.
