Hussey and Loye condemn Glamorgan to wooden spoon

Gold Award winner Mike Hussey scored a maiden 100 for Northamptonshire to ease his side to an eight-wicket victory over Glamorgan at Cardiff.

Although neither county could qualify for the quarter-finals the Western Australian showed great determination as he carried his bat to finish on 114, and on the way shared a record opening partnership with Mal Loye (of 158) for Northamptonshire in the competition.

It beat the 148 compiled by Rob Bailey and Wayne Larkins against Scotland in 1984.

Chasing 238 to win on a good Sophia Garden pitch Northamptonshire passed the winning line with three overs to spare, leaving sad Glamorgan without a win in the tournament - the first time they have done that since 1986 - after they reached the final last season.

After being put into bat Glamorgan were indebted to Adrian Dale and Matthew Maynard who helped recover the innings after the home side had been reduced to five for three in 13 balls.

With Jimmy Maher, Keith Newell and Steve James back in the pavilion in quick time there was much need for a rebuilding job which Dale and Maynard did with a stand of 81-runs in 18 overs.

Maynard went lbw to Kevin Innes after compiling an entertaining half-century in 67 balls.

But Dale carried on and shared in two 50 stands with Adrian Shaw and Robert Croft to compile Glamorgan's best score in the competition this season after four straight defeats against Somerset, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire.

Dale ended two short of a century in an innings that came off 119 balls and included five fours.
