India and West Indies will contest the first One Day International (ODI) series to be played since the introduction of the ICC ODI Team Rankings, last week. India, Ranked fifth with a Rating of 106, takes on West Indies Ranked seventh, with a Rating of 94, in a seven match series beginning in Jamshedpur tomorrow.

ICC ODI Rankings are based on a model developed by David Kendix
Looking ahead to the possible outcomes from this series, a convincing win for India would move it to within a few Rating points of Pakistan in fourth position. As a result, Carl Hooper's team would then drop one place to eighth, a position currently occupied by New Zealand. Alternatively, a strong winning series for West Indies would move it up one Ranking place into sixth, ahead of England.
"One of the primary aims behind the introduction of the new ICC ODI Rankings is to add context and interest to every match in every series," said ICC General Manager-Cricket, David Richardson. "This series is a good example of that, as the new system means that both India and West Indies can improve their positions, depending on the eventual result," he explained.
The Ranking table will be updated on the ICC website - www.icc.cricket.org - with the result of every ODI match. There is also an interactive facility which allows the effects of future results to be predicted.
The India - West Indies ODI series will be refereed by Mike Procter, with Emirates Elite Panel umpire Asoka de Silva standing in all seven matches, played in:

The formula used by the ICC to determine team Ranking positions takes into account the following factors:
- results from all ODI matches played over the previous two to three years
- strength of opposition, with greater reward for beating higher ranked opponents
- greater importance is placed on more recent results, with older matches dropped every 12 months
- all matches have equal status, with no account taken of venue or margin of victory
