Australia needs 6-1 series win to maintain current rating
Australia needs to beat the West Indies 6-1 in the seven match Cable and Wireless One Day International series starting in Jamaica on Saturday 17th May if it is to maintain its current ICC ODI Championship rating of 136.
Australia's record breaking run of 17 consecutive ODI victories has boosted its rating to the highest it has been since the ICC ODI Championship was launched in October 2002.
The phenomenal run has enabled Ricky Ponting's team to open up a 14 point gap ahead of South Africa in second place. However, this prolonged success means that Australia needs to continue winning almost all of its matches in order to maintain the size of its lead. For example, a series win for Australia by 5-2 or 4-3 would reduce its rating but still keep the lead over South Africa in double figures.
West Indies, on the other hand, has an opportunity to climb the table if it can conquer the World Champions on home soil. A 4-3 victory for Brian Lara's men would put the Windies in contention for fourth place depending on the outcome matches currently taking place in Sri Lanka.
A 7-0 home whitewash would even see the West Indies climb to third, though Australia would still hold on to top spot.

How the ICC ODI Championship works:
The formula used by the ICC to determine ranking positions takes into account the following factors:
- results from all ODI matches played over the previous two to three years
- strength of opposition, with greater reward for beating higher ranked opponents
- greater importance is placed on more recent results, with older matches dropped every 12 months
- all matches have equal status, with no account taken of venue or margin of victory
