India-Pakistan veterans' one-dayers from Oct. 17

HYDERABAD, Oct. 13.
The cricket lovers of twin cities can have a fair glimpse of
`golden oldies' when India and Pakistan clash in the first of
the five-match, one-day series for the Zandu Balm Independence
Cup for veterans at the floodlit Lal Bahadur Stadium here on
October 17.
Mr P.R. Man Singh of Veteran Cricketers Association of Hyderabad
said that all the matches would be 40-overs-each affairs with
the one at Hyderabad being a day-and-night encounter. He said
that the veterans series had been revived after a lapse of 10
years. ``We are planning to send the Indian veterans to Holland
next summer and to South Africa next winter,'' he informed.
Mr. Man Singh said that some of the leading lights of Pakistan
cricket like Asif Iqbal, Zaheer Abbas, who will lead the team,
will be in action. He recalled the special affinity former
Pakistan captain Asif Iqbal has with Hyderabad. ``Having been
born and brought up here and also played for Pakistan in the
South Zone match last in 1980, the `local' cricketer should be
one of the crowdpullers,'' he observed.
The winners will be richer by Rs. 1 lakh and there will be man
of the matches awards too with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and
also for the best batsman. International umpire V.K. Ramaswamy
and Parthasarathy of South Central Railway will be officiating
in the match.
Mr. Man Singh said that the next four matches would be played in
Cuttack on October 20, Ahmedabad on October 25, Bhopal on
October 24 and Jaipur on October 27. ``In connection with the
inaugural match, renowned Test Test cricketer and former BCCI
official Polly Umrigar will be felicitated at a celebrity dinner
on October 16,'' he revealed. Mr. Mahesh Parekh of Zandu Balm
also spoke.
The Indian team will be led by Mohinder Amarnath. Sale of
tickets with denominations ranging from Rs. 25 to Rs. 150 will
begin at the Stadium from October 14.
