India v England

At Chennai, January 25 (day/night)

15-Apr-2003
At Chennai, January 25 (day/night). India won by four wickets. Toss: England.
On a rare visit to his native city, Hussain won his first toss in ten one-day internationals, but had his homecoming spoiled by an attack of the clones. Ganguly's hamstring trouble prompted the launch of a daring new double act - Tendulkar and the 23-year-old Sehwag, whose every shot seemed modelled on his partner. Chasing a below-par target of 218, the little masters raised 107, virtually settling the match. Hoggard did engineer a middle-order collapse - three wickets in six balls - but the momentum reversed again when Foster dropped Badani in the next over. Ratra's unbeaten 29 finished the job. Earlier, Hollioake had defied stomach trouble to revive a faltering innings, adding 70 with the versatile Snape. Hussain fell anticlimactically, caught at mid-on for one off Bangar's second delivery in one-day internationals, but the most frustrating dismissal was that of Hoggard, the last man, run out off the seventh ball of the 48th over. The match was tarnished by England's mean-spirited mood: Snape shoved Badani in the back, Hoggard gestured two batsmen back to the pavilion, and Flintoff sledged relentlessly.
Man of the Match: S. R. Tendulkar.
