India v South Africa

Toss: India.

15-Apr-2000
Toss: India.
A festive atmosphere and a cracking finish were overshadowed, for the press at least, by the strange case of Cronje's earpiece. South Africa were experimenting with a one-way radio system: Cronje and Donald were wired up to coach Bob Woolmer, who sat in the dressing-room dispensing advice. The referee, Talat Ali, was not impressed and pounced at the first drinks break. ICC later ruled out remote-control captaincy, at least for the rest of the World Cup.
India's batsmen played their own game. Though Tendulkar fell just after he had tantalised the tastebuds with a cover drive, Ganguly, playing in his 100th one-day international but first World Cup match, hit form to add a well-crafted 130 with Dravid. They failed to capitalise fully, however, and were out in quick succession, Ganguly foolishly taking on Rhodes's arm. Donald bowled particularly well. Srinath, aggressive in turn, dismissed Kirsten and Gibbs early, but Kallis calmly powered onwards. When he was beaten by a sharp throw from Prasad - like Ganguly, just short of his hundred - South Africa needed 27 in 26 balls. Enter Klusener, who hit his first three deliveries for four. A wonderful match was marred only by a pitch invader who tried to attack Azharuddin and Dravid as they walked off.
Man of the Match: J. H. Kallis. Attendance: 6,216.
