†INDIA v SRI LANKA 1986-87

At Bombay, January 17

15-Apr-1988
At Bombay, January 17. India won by 10 runs. A memorable match provided the highest runs-per-over quotient in international cricket as Sri Lanka bravely chased India's 299. Azharuddin hit his first hundred in one-day cricket and saw India to their highest score in a one-day international - compiled in just 40 overs after Mendis had asked them to bat. Mahanama (91 balls) laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's assault, which was at its peak when Gurusinha (34 balls, two sixes, five fours) was hitting Kapil Dev out of the ground. Such an extraordinary innings could not continue, however, and when Mahanama was run out soon after Gurusinha's dismissal, Sri Lanka's momentum was checked.
Man of the Match: R. S. Mahanama.
