The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president AC Muthiah in a press release from Chennai on Sunday said the selectors would meet in Chennai on September 20 to pick the Indian squad for the forthcoming ICC Knockout Tournament to be played Nairobi from October 3-15.
In a move which may surprise everyone, Muthiah has said "Kapil Dev might be invited to coach the probables." This decision comes at the wake of the Board authorising the board president to take an appropriate decision against the former Indian allrounder. Earlier, in an interview to a Dubai newspaper, Muthiah had confirmed that the Board was looking for a foreign coach. Talking to Gulf News on Friday, Muthiah had said "We are looking for a foreign coach. Three names are seriously under consideration."
In the statement, Muthiah has reiterated the BCCI's stand that no action would be taken against players or administrators until they are proven guilty. Muthiah clarified that "the Sports Ministry did not give any direction in writing or other communication on the selection of players and added that the board did not give any direction to the selection committee members." He added, "The three players namely Mohd. Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Nikhil Chopra were rested purely on their lack of merit."
Twenty-three probables have been selected to attend the preparatory camp which will commence in Chennai from September 14 to 23. Sourav Ganguly has been retained as captain for the torunament and Rahul Dravid as his deputy. The probables are: * SC Ganguly, R Dravid, SR Tendulkar, VG Kambli, S Sriram, A Kumble, SB Joshi, RR Singh, Yuvraj Singh, BKV Prasad, AB Agarkar, HK Badani, A Ratra, S Ramesh, M Kaif, JJ Martin, Z Khan, A Bhandari, T Kumaran, DS Mohanty, RS Sodhi, V Dahiya, S Reuben Paul.
