Derek Kenway's first Championship century since July 2001 was the mainstay of Hampshire's first innings, that gave the home side a lead of 145, but it could have been better as they lost their last 4 wickets without scoring.
John Crawley was the first wicket to fall in the second day, when he was decieved by an inswinging all from Jon Lewis. This brought together Kenway and Simon Katich. Together they shared a 133 run partnership that put them into a position to build up a good lead. Katich fell for 61 however, to bring Robin Smith to the crease. Smith struck 10 fours as for a while Kenway played the anchor role, before the vetaran became the third batsman to be bowled.
Kenway then became the fourth for a superb 115, he had batted for just under 5 hours hitting 15 fours and three sixes.
Three batsmen fell when reaching 20, and Hampshire captain Crawley would have been disapointed with the lead as at one point a much larger effort was expected.
Ian Harvey was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers with his 4 wicket return.
Gloucestershire had 17 overs to survive before the close, but they lost Craig Spearman for 20 and night-watchman Mike Smith to finish 95 runs adrift as they go into the third day with 8 wickets remaining.
